From the Ed Show May 1, 2009. Ed Schultz's "Op-Ed" on President Obama's choice for David Souter's replacement on the Supreme Court. Ed's got this one right. Elections have consequences. The GOP did nothing but carping over their desire for an "up and down" vote when they were wanting Bush's right wingers nominated to the point where I was ready to throw something through my television screen if I heard it one more time. Bill "the cat killer" Frist said it so many times I was wondering if he was repeating it in his sleep.

Now that the shoe is on the other foot we'll see what sort of three ring circus they put on to obstruct Obama's nomination. I await the WATB side show that is sure to come. Fortunately since we have so many of them recorded crying about getting Bush's nominees through the inevitable hissy fits will be much easier to be called out for that they are..feigned indignation and wanting things both ways. Whether our sorry ass excuse for a "mainstream media" will follow suit is another story.

They won't, they don't like to show the hypocrisy of one of their own, especially when their parent corporations paid for them to get elected.

used as a tool of empire, to undermine democracy, and to consolidate wealth and power into a very few hands. It's accomplished those tasks very well.

don't hold your breath.

in Thug America. Some Dems who voted for Roberts in the "spirit of cooperation" (Patty Murray, I am looking fucking DIRECTLY at you) better be ready to bark some shins while reminding the ever-shrinking Party of WATBs of this little fact.

is is, here are the last few presidents nominations (not withdrawn) and the votes.

G.W. Bush
Samuel Alito, Jr. 58-42
John Roberts, Jr.1 78-22

W. Clinton
Stephen Breyer 87-9
Ruth Bader Ginsburg 96-3

G.H.W. Bush
Clarence Thomas 52-48
David Souter 90-9

R. Reagan
Anthony Kennedy 97-0
Robert Bork 42-58
Antonin Scalia 98-0
William Rehnquist 65-33
Sandra Day O'Connor 99-0

Definitely shows non-partisanship on one side.

Seems like the majority of dissenting votes came about with Dems in congress.

Boy it feels great to hear someone on TV *openly* using the term "Liberal" as a positive instead of a pejorative... or at the very least, not shy away from the word like it's something to be ashamed of.

To hell with this bipartisan waffling and compromise. Obama needs to appoint a unabashed liberal to the court. If you try to be everything to everyone you wind up being nothing to nobody. Compromise with the GOP is a waste of time---why compromise with self centered backward looking fools with no vision? They tear down what progressives seek to build.

President Obama has spent SO much of his first hundred days trying to get Republicans to like him (complete waste of effort), that I fear he may continue by picking someone they won't have too many complaints with.

Ed is right. Screw 'em. Try to show them some consideration, and their reaction is to vote No on every vote, call you a Socialist and encourage "Tea bag parties." Enough is enough.

Obama either stands for something,
or he stands for nothing.
This pick will be another defining moment in his tenure.
His lack of support for the bill to help homeowners was a recent one.
His lack of support for going after the evil doers in the previous administration is another.

We'll be finding out...
But as these tell-tale actions go on, and the war in Iraq goes on, the future does not look bright.

Eric Can"tor "The reality is, the prescriptions coming out of Washington right now are not reflective of the mainstream of this country." http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/05/02/gop.to...

Yea, that's why Obama has a 70% approval rating while the GOP's opproval rating is in the 20%!

The reality is Can'tor is out of touch with reality and I hope he stays that way to help us build a permanent Democratic majority!

but it's still a turd.

I want a Obama to put a long haired, sandal wearing, daisy chain sporting hippie on the bench! If for no other reason to watch Alito and Scalia choke on their cannoli's and see Thomas spew his pubic hair laced coke across the courtroom!

Mugsy's picture

...Anita Hill for the Supreme Court?

Beside being both the second black and second woman on the Court, I just like the idea of screwing with Clarance Thomas. :)

Obama will offer up some milktoast female nominee to fill the spot. This was part of the election package - Obama WILL nominate 1, probably 2 SCJs now comes the concessions, negotiations and deliberation.

"Oh please right wing nut jobs, let us have a nice timid bipartisan moderate be on the judiciary?" Please, pleeeeze,....

Sorry ED no liberal lions are warming up in the bullpen.

...of all of those GOP'ers saying "up or down vote" and play it back to their faces when they start their inevitable whining. They'll claim "this is different" and I'll ask them "why?"

Dear GOP,

With Obama's 70% approval ratings today we regret to inform you that the meaning of up or down vote has changed.

Your party is going down---so up yours.

Don't you need to be a judge, or at the very least a lawyer?

There have been several members who were not judges or lawyers. I don't think there has been any recently though.

Barack Obama: Change we can only imagine

democracy up

limbaugh and hannity (via federalist society/GOP) will set the table and start the speculation and before obama makes his pick the lies and distortions will be subject for discussion on TV and print, armies of dittoheads will be applying pressure, GOP senators will be drawing lines, and the compromising will start.

it is way past time the radio monopoly is broken up.

Just to add more Liberals to it.

"Whether our sorry ass excuse for a "mainstream media" will follow suit is another story."

What about our sorry as excuse for a liberal congress? I am getting pretty pissed off at their sorry asses. We won the god damn election. Elections have consequences. Appoint Bill Clinton. Just to show the radical right wingnutz who is in power.

Why do I suspect that whomever is appointed they will be some Pro-business pusshead with a little civil libertarian(not to much)grafted in on the side. But from what I've seen a liberal need not apply unless you think being pro business justices can be liberal. Part of the reason I don't trust Obama is he is so bipartisan still in the face of the constant NO he's getting from the other side.

crazytown's picture

isn't it that Obama keeps shitting the power of the left straight out his ass. He keeps flying straight over the heads of people who could help our dying democracy.

It is deliberate.

Bill E Pilgrim's picture

Always say "up or down vote", which comes out like "upper down", I often thought they were talking about Limbaugh's drug habit.

Also "so-skirty", never "social security", and then of course "preznit", or "presint".

As in "Rush gulped another upper down and he was so skirty that he was barely presint."

Tax the Rich's picture

Obama will offer up another republican-lite Clinton flunky from the 90's. I have already accepted the fact that the democrats will continue to dissappoint the American people.

Until the blue dog jackasses who have sold out the American people are replaced or primaried out, the one party system we have (the bribery party) will continue unabated.

Obama is trying to change the direction of this country while keeping the status quo on Wall Street in charge. NOT gonna happen. And a liberal judge is not in their best interest.

Sorry my fellow haters of corporate fascism, but another repuke-lite Clinton flunky (ala Larry Summers) is on the way to the Supreme Court.

Further to the right please! Maybe they will nominate Ben Nelson or Evan Bayh.

If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.

Obama is NOT trying to change the direction of this country (we ASSUME it is away from fascism but that was never actually DEFINED by him) otherwise he wouldn't choose the status quo on Wall Street. So if he is trying to "change" the direction of this country we have to define what is meant by "change" which by all appearances could be toward deeper social control and fascism.
It is after all, "change".

Yes, this nomination is where the rubber hits the road. This is where we find out if Obama meant what he said over the past two years of campaigning, or whether he is all flash and no substance. Here's how to tell:

Nominee is Lawrence Lessig; Obama is legit.
Nominee is Cass Sunstein; Obama punked us.

I'd love to see Feingold's name put up, but I harbor secret fantasies of him being elected majority leader after Reid loses re-election.

crazytown's picture

The name of the game is Appearances (appeasement, throw one bone to the progressives). There will be TWO new SC appointees, possibly three by 2012. Should one be a warm humanitarian upholder of the constitution, the other bone goes to an SOB to maintain all manner of disempowerment of said constitution in the hands of the NEOcons which obviously cancels out the interests of you and me.

We can expect lots of theater, rah-rah histrionics like something is genuinely being fought for. But the result will take one weight from the REAL democratic scale placing it on the Neocon scale weighting it by one more extra SCORE for the neos.

Good idea to watch this shellgame carefully. My bet, progressives come up short by design.

majority rules

in Canada, when a majority is in power,.... they are in power

why do Dems in th US always have to bend over for the nutty right half all the time just to play nice?

a majority is a majority and learn to use it when you got it

appoint a god damn Liberal

I almost forgot about the scavenging for cats at animal shelters to use for experimentation. Frist promised to give them good homes. Here's the link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Frist_medic... and the quote: "I lost my supply of cats. I only had six weeks to complete my project before I resumed my clinical rotations. Desperate, obsessed with my work, I visited the various animal shelters in the Boston suburbs, collecting cats . . . it was a heinous and dishonest thing to do."
Heart of gold.

of Specter.
Thanks to the geniuses in the democratic party, we can look forward to Arlen Specter voting against a progressive nominee - as a democrat.

Now that's progress.

Wouldn't it be great if we got a liberal minority who is gay and in their 40's. The Right would probably leave the planet.

WE(and I mean Obama) have to quit trying for "bipartisanship". To quote Toby Ziegler from West Wing: "They'll like us when we win!" Rethuglicans don't see reaching across the aisle as a good thing; they see it as a sign of weakness, or an opening to be exploited! We need to kill them and their party just to watch them die!!! We need to select an ultra-liberal Supreme Court Justice about 15 minutes out of law school for a good, long term. If Arlen lets us down and doesn't vote for cloture, we raise a point of order and change Senate rules to make it 51 votes and run a REAL Dem against him in 2010!

We need to put the full power of the Government behind the census, to make sure ALL people are counted, and use the reapportionment to Gerrymander districts like Texas did under Terminex Tom Delay; we need to use the 14th Amendment to provide consistency in voting procedures, so that Democrats and not Diebold pick our candidates. We need to use anti-trust laws that prevent 300 radio stations from soiling the air with Limbaugh/Levin/Savage, not because the market demands it but because they further the party line. (I mean, come on, I live in very, very liberal Seattle and we have ONE liberal radio station and FOUR conservative ones!)
Remember, elections have consequences. To quote Jon Stewart: "You lost! It's SUPPOSED to taste like a shit taco!"

crazytown's picture

what you're saying is more single-issue divisiveness is the answer. it is exactly one of the main lousy habits that serve this rogue gov't.

If we're in this together we're in this together. Gay straight mexican arab married not married man woman rich or poor.

What needs to happen is that we the people must rise up! People in other western countries are willing to risk everything to try and change things for the better. Too many Americans (myself included, to be honest) just wait for others to solve the problems of this country or say; oh that's how it's always been, they (the politicians) are all crooked. That's not enough anymore!

If we want democracy to survive, it will have to be fought for in the streets, courts, and halls of congress!

Now everybody can understand why he was fired as a detective. He's just too stupid.
