I for one am inclined to suspect that perhaps without being consciously aware of it himself, the god to whom he was referring is Mammon AKA The Almighty Dollar -- indeed, in my opinion, that's the only possibility which would make his statement true. This much at least is certain -- it can't possibly be the Judeo-Christian one (which is the one to which that word refers in the minds of most Americans), not when you consider the number of verses in the Bible which suggest that it's all too easy for the pursuit of wealth to create a conflict of interest with belief in and obedience to God.

It sounds to me as if someone needs to remind Blankfein that God's work is supposed to benefit everyone and not just the super-wealthy. If the last thirty years have proved anything, it's that "helping companies grow" tends to benefit those who own them far more than anyone else and that "trickle-down economics" is at best an illusion (and at worst, an elaborate scam which has been in large part responsible for the economic stagnation and increasing erosion of the middle class). For that matter, if Blankfein had truly believed at the time that Goldman had no need of a bailout, then why did he take TARP funds since that's what they were for? And no...I don't care that he's already paid the money back with interest. The very least the man could do is show some gratitude!

Say you're doing God's work, get the poor, uneducated, easily convinced fundies to support your Godly Mission to get rich.

In my decidedly un-cultured community, we've got only about three radio stations in town that play music of any kind and 1 and a half NPR affiliates. The music stations have playlists about 12 songs deep, and I don't care for every single program on NPR. So I use the "scan" button a lot.

I can reliably receive 3 "Christian" radio stations, and 2 or 3 more if conditions are right. These are instantly recognizable -- not because they'll usually be broadcasting a sermon or hymns, choral anthems or the dreaded "contemporary Christian music". You know, the meat-and-potatoes of religious stations a few decades ago. No, what I'll almost always hear are political and religious programs. Programs with a remarkably consistent ultra-conservative political outlook and a decidedly pronounced laissez faire economic viewpoint. Always spiced liberally with biblical and faux-biblical justifications.

I have to wonder what would cause these stations to take such a consistent viewpoint, and to devote so much programming to issues not related to evangelism or spirituality or even religious apologetics. Could it be the source of their funding? Would anyone be surprised if these stations were bought-and-paid-for by the Goldman Sachses and other corporate conglomerates of this world? Perhaps for the express purpose of convincing these easily convinced fools that they are divinely ordained?

Or perhaps I just see conspiracies everywhere, who knows.

Remember "follow the money"? It's the only tried and true way to unravel the lies and cover stories that hide corporate or government criminality. And for Goldman there's an obvious one: How did they get paid $12.9 billion - dollar for dollar -- on their counterparty positions with AIG? Who negotiated these payouts on behalf of AIG and Goldman? Who at Treasury approved them? Was every AIG counterparty paid out dollar for dollar? And if not, what criteria were used to distinguish counterparty payouts?

Single issue -- very simple. A real inquiry digging for answers to these basic questions would unravel the whole scheme.

But Woodward and Bernstein-style journalistic integrity is long gone. And writing letters to congresspersons and media outlets will no longer inspire them to do the people's business. Sigh, ugh, repeat.

Which leaves only higher law: "Pride goeth before the fall" and "There're no pockets in a shroud."

These are the guys that the GOP wants you to trust with your Social Security fund.
