Keith Olbermann reported that intel officials, including the head of the FBI, said that there have been no serious plots that have been thwarted by torture. In fact, they said 90% of what KSM said under torture proved to be untrue.
Of course, they had to act on the faulty intel as if it were true, and then they had to waste manpower and resources until they found out the intel gained from torture was wrong.

Up where I live in my little city, my local mayor (who lost his re-election bid) had some weird ties to people who were doing a lot of new housing construction. We found out the construction company had paid for some of the guy's vacations. And, now thanks to this mayor and his ill-advised building ambitions, the city is in some horrible debt.

Obama's stated intention NOT to prosecute the Bush administration war criminals disturbs me perhaps more than anything else he's done that I think is unwise.
I only hope his legal team will forcefully bring his error to his attention and insist that he, at least, not stand in the way of prosecutions. It would be interesting to see who has standing to bring such lawsuits if Obama won't act. I'm hoping the ACLU or a Constitutional Law group would be able to do it.

I'm confused. "We don't do torture" except waterboarding, but we don't call waterboarding torture, we call it an "enhanced interrogation technique". But wait, doesn't the Geneva Conventions consider waterboarding torture? And didn't America sign on to those Conventions? So, just set aside the question of whether torture "works" or not; it seems to me now that America does torture and that 9/11 justifies it. Tell me, is this ok with most people? Do the ends justify the means in this case? Has America lost the "moral high ground" that it has always claimed to have?

The detainees in Cuba are not terrorist, they are alleged terrorist. That difference is crucial to anyone with half a brain, because it means no one has bothered to stand before the public and say, "Here is my evidence that this person is a terrorist." No one has said, "We have a video tape of Mohammad the taxi-driver sun bathing with Bin laden, making a bomb, with the words 'death to America' scrawled across it." Basically, no one has done this because no one has evidence they feel is strong to go court with.
America is a free country, a country that believes in the dignity of humans beings so strongly, that when wrote to the world the reasons we were starting our own country (the declaration of independence) we argued that "all men are created equal and they are endowed by their creator with inalienable rights..."
When we wrote the constitution we got more specific about what those rights were. Freedom from cruel and unusual punishment was among them.
Now sadists, ever looking for a way to inflict cruelty on the world will argue, "That, only applies to Americans. Non-Americans don't have those rights" They ignore the fact the declaration of independence in essence argues that those rights are the birthright of mankind and that is why we choose to setup a government that protects them. Those in favor of Guantanamo and torture are Un-American in the truest sense of the world.
Here's the stumble: If the government already knows detainees are terrorists, why bother to torture them? Just try them in court with what you know. If the government's knowledge about a detainee is sufficient to declare him a terrorist, it's quite sufficient to put him on trial.
