Dana Bash Calls Arizona Shooting a 'Wake Up Call' for 'Both Parties' to Tone Down Rhetoric
We had to know this was coming, didn't we? Let the false equivalencies begin:
LEMON: Dana, before the break, I talked to you about the mood and the tone in Washington and politics these days. We know it's out there. We've seen what's been happening on social media, some people blaming, you know, certain members, certain elected and non-elected members. We don't know the motivation yet but does this send some sort of signal to us and to our law makers about how we view politics and tone?
BASH: Well, you're absolutely right, we don't know the motivation but regardless something like this tends to be... tends to be a wake up call and we've already heard from some members of Congress who have been on our air earlier today saying that they do hope that this is a wake up call, a wake up call for both parties to try to get out... get the word out their to their supporters, to constituents, to maybe even the blogosphere, which is not easy, to tone it down a little bit.
You know we actually got a statement from John McCain, the senior Senator from Gabby Giffords' home state of Arizona, who obviously didn't point the finger that way but was very, very strong and I think maybe indicative of what we're talking about. He said “Whoever did this, whatever reason they are a disgrace to Arizona, this country and the human race” and he said “They deserve and will deserve the contempt of all decent people and the strongest punishment of the law.”
When you're hearing a Republican like John McCain say that and we're hearing John Boehner and other Republicans say that, it's hard to imagine that there isn't going to be a coming together of some sort of both the parties in Congress after this.
If anyone needs to be told to tone down their rhetoric, it's John McCain and his former running mate, Sarah Palin. Sorry Dana, but “both sides” don't have a 24/7 hate television network and hate radio spreading lies and whipping up the fear and anger in their audience week after week. And there aren't any Democratic politicians out there doing what Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann and company have done with repeating eliminationist rhetoric at every opportunity.
No one does know what this man's motivation was in this shooting yet, but when it comes to the politicians who obviously have little concern if this type of tragedy could end up being the result of their rhetoric, there's just one side that needs to get that message, and it's the Republicans and their enablers on Fox and right-wing hate radio. We don't have any Democratic members of Congress out there telling their constituents to "reload' or that we need investigations looking into whether they're anti-American or not.
Other than Mike Malloy(who only responds with hate from Conservative hate) I know of no Progressive politician, media talker who incites violence like Beck, Palin, Rush, Savage, that raggety old second amendment solution bitch from Arizona, etc.

Hating those who incite this sort of violence is not equivalent, in the least, to those who are inciting the violence to begin with. And that is exactly what CNN is trying to get away with.
Malloy's MO only affects his blood pressure, Beck and his friends are getting exactly what they were asking for: people killed.

The False Equivalence is needed because to tell the truth would tear the modern conservative movement, and most of the Republican party, apart. Since the R's are more willing servants of the corporate conglomerates that own the media, the media will not allow this, as it affects their tax rates. It would also force people to critically examine their beliefs, and that would cause a great lashing out at those who they believe duped them, which would of course be the progressives and educated, and not those who really did.

When was the last time, you saw someone go to a political rally armed that wasn't either a police officer, or secret service? And, a presidential rally no less. They didn't pounce on this guy. They didn't arrest him. They told him he couldn't stay if he chose to display his rifle.
Now, I'm 53. This is the first time that I have ever seen someone allowed into a rally carrying a weapon. Normally, they get thrown to the ground and a dogpile ensues. Then, after the guy gets out of the hospital, he goes to jail.
I did read a story just a few days ago, about this guy who threatened the Prez. It was his sentencing. I'll have to look for that.

I wholeheartedly agree that almost all of the vitriol is coming from the right, but to be fair we have to acknowledge that there is a faction from the left that also indulges in vitriol as well.
I've been to plenty of political protest marches and other political gatherings where there always seemed to be a group (usually young men in leather jackets) whose energy and speech and sometimes actions were just plain frightening, intimidating, aggressive, and/or seemingly on the verge of violence if not outright violent.
That's perhaps our opportunity to stop the madness. Even though the "violent" faction of the left is very much a fringe element and certainly seems to be a much smaller % of the left than what we see coming from the right, acknowledging its existence and allowing the right to believe that somehow it's all equal may get them to stop. Even Olbermann ackowledged some culpability in adding to the culture of vitriol. If he can do it so can all of us.
I'm all for whatever it takes to stop the scary words and actions. and if getting the right wing to stop the vitriol means the left has to cop to some sort of of false equivalence then so be it. It's like having to deal with an unreasonable child for which one has no authority over. The right, in this respect of not taking responsibility for their actions, is, and has been, childish.
We can try to punish the child if we wish, but if stopping the vitriol is the goal then perhaps another tactic is needed. If agreeing to a (false) equivalence stops the vitriol then I'm all for it.
