Just minutes ago, local Winston-Salem TV station WXII12 News released an exclusive interview with embattled Rep. Virginia Foxx, whose malicious comments about the circumstances surrounding the murder of Matthew Shepard have caused scorn and anger, and, according to her office, ten death threats.
Foxx’s newest “apology” demonstrates her lack of understanding of the basic issue confronting her: She lied about why Matthew Shepard was killed, and maligned the memory of a 21 year-old college student who, to the world, has become the face of a hate crime victim.
“In the heat of trying to handle the rule on the floor, anybody can use a bad choice of words. Saying that the event was a hoax was a poor choice of words,” Foxx said. “I’ve apologized for that. I never meant in any way to harm the family or offend the family or anybody else for that matter.”
Hardly a change from yesterday’s statement:
“The term ‘hoax’ was a poor choice of words used in the discussion of the hate-crimes bill,” Foxx said in a statement. “Mr. Shepard’s death was nothing less than a tragedy, and those responsible for his death certainly deserved the punishment they received.”
One non-apology is bad, two demonstrates not only a lack of remorse or decency, but a total lack of understanding of the important and sensitive issues that confront out country.

It also very nicely explains the Hate Crimes bill, as there seem to be many misconceptions flying around the tubes.

Foxx's comments are completely unacceptable as a representative of anywhere. She is an embarrassment to the state of North Carolina. I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss her as vulnerable, especially seeing the swath her district takes. Most of her district is solid redneck Republican. They are as against gays as they are people of color.
In a good enough world, people of her ilk would never be elected.
In Foxx's case, and particulary to the venom she spews, I am reminded of the saying attributed to Burke: ‘All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing’

Anyone who saw her original "speech" on the House floor knows it was not a "poor choice of words" in "the heat" of the moment. That imbecile was READING from her prepared remarks. WE knew that, but it was obvious. She was reading. She planned to say it, and she did.

I am led back to thinking about research that's been done on people who are homophobes. Two kinds of homophobes have been identified so far.
"Defensive homophobes" are sexually attracted to same gender sex and feel a latent aversion to it that gets projected onto homosexuals.
The other category of homophobes is comprised of a phobic-like aversion to homosexuality.
Here are the results of a 1996 University of Georgia study on homophobia, which some have already seen:

It involved 64 white men, none of whom had engaged in homosexual acts during their lifetime. Their sexual fantasies involved only women. 35 of them were rated homophobic; 29 non-homophobic. For the purpose of this study, "homophobia" was defined as a negative emotional reaction (e.g., fear, anxiety, anger, discomfort) to homosexuality. It was measured by a questionnaire called the Index of Homophobia. Each was shown three types of X rated videotapes: heterosexual, lesbian and gay. A plethysmograph measuring device (affectionately called a "peter meter") measured the circumference of their penis as a gauge of sexual arousal.
The two groups exhibited similar arousal when they viewed 4 minute samples taken from one heterosexual and one lesbian movie. But they responded differently to the male homosexual clip:

Non-Homophobic men - Insignificant 66%, Moderate 10%, Definite 24%
The researchers concluded that these data are consistent with the belief that most homophobic men have repressed homosexual desires. An alternative, but much less likely, explanation is that the homophobic men's erections were caused by anxiety during the experiment.
Further research is needed to clarify the results and to answer questions such as whether these results would generalize to homophobic women.

All this is relevant if we are to tackle the root causes of violent homophobia. We need to teach children to accept the affectional or sexual longings of themselves and others with grace and smarts -- to enable them to grow up as non-homophobes.

Olbermann left out an important detail. 20/20 is drek, and John Stossel's whole act is to debunk liberal assumptions like gravity, photosynthesis, and the murder of Matthew Shepard. Just watching 20/20, much less relying on the things you hear there to be factual, is enough to harm a person's credibility.
