CNN's Hero of the Year: Liz McCartney
By Heather Sunday Nov 30, 2008 3:00pm
For all the really lousy things I could say about CNN and their coverage of the news in general, I've got to give them some kudos for the special they aired, 2008 CNN Hero of the Year. They did a great job of bringing attention to the many people that are doing great work that is going unnoticed by the general public, and none more worthy than their winner this year Liz McCartney who is dedicated to making sure Hurricane Katrina survivors in St. Bernard Parish have a chance of returning to their homes. It would be nice to see CNN do a bit more of this sort of coverage on their network minus the fanfare on a regular basis.
When they start asking Joe Lieberman why he hasn't done his job as Committee Chair and investigated the waste and fraud by the Bush administration after the hurricanes I'll believe they're actually concerned about what happens to the residents of the Gulf coast.

It boggles the mind that, three years after Katrina, there is still so much that needs to be done. What an amazing lady Liz McCartney is. I know she will spend that prize money wisely on the Katrina victims who need it so desperately.
Kudos, Liz!
When CNN starts...
"asking Joe Lieberman why he hasn't done his job as Committee Chair and investigated the waste and fraud by the Bush administration after the hurricanes I'll believe they're actually concerned about what happens to the residents of the Gulf coast."
Thanks Heather. We need more than feel good stuff we need hard work and dedication to the profession. Hope this blog inspires more people to do this sort of thing. Thanks.
My family are St. Bernard Refugees. We're from Chalmette in St. Bernard Parish.
Basically, Chalmette is a town that doesn't exist anymore.
We now live elsewhere. That place will never be rebuilt. And it should NOT be rebuilt.
For the simple reason that it's too dangerous to live there. The flood left it a toxic wasteland and when the next hurricane comes, it'll be a graveyard.
Call me cynical but doesn't it make for a better story that she's blonde haired and blue-eyed helping out all them poor black folks. She's truly a hero, but I can see "hot story" written all over this one.
You're cynical. :-)
If if what you say is accurate, is that still cynical? Hmmm.
Being from the area, I would say that most people consider St. Bernard a white parish: Arabi, Chalmette, Violet, etc. were mostly white towns.
I went to Chalmette High school, I think there may have been less than 10 black students in the whole school.
I lot of people from St. Bernard have parents who originally came from the 9th ward neighbourhoods. These whites started fleeing to the parish in the 50s and 60s as blacks moved in to the 9th ward.
At least that's what I was told by the grandparent generation.
How to describe St. Bernard...??
It's like a Bon Jovi song with shrimp boats, I guess...
Hero of the year is all well and good, but if CNN were doing its job and fullfilling its duty to the public, they would have been waging a relentless campaign these last few years challenging the Bush regime for their criminal negligenceover the entire Katrina fiasco. Against such a background of abyssmal failure on their part, this story takes on the tone of a feel-good propaganda piece.
yep, just strolling around on Google street view, I found my old street.
My house was an empty shell. The once beautiful property next door was only a barren slab.
The media failed just as much as the government did.
Three years after Katrina, what was ever left of my faith in my country is dead.
Not even Obama can resurrect it.
I left the country for good and will never return.
GREAT work Liz, et al....

The problem with the MSM and CNN in particular is that it does not want to offend anyone by asking the tough questions, actually by asking the tough follow up questions.
You are not really doing real journalism or at least investigative journalism unless you are offending someone.
CNN just tries to largely play it safe, right down the middle.
Actually, I would say that Lou Dobbs is the exception, but his journalism is extremely bias to his own agenda, which usually involves distorting the facts. He is not so much a journalist, as a right wing commentator.
Wolf Blitzer, although he tries to ask the tough questions, he never really gets that deep into any issue, as he tries to cover too much. Everything is just a sound bit for him.
"CNN Heroes" was OK. I just wish they could have aired the program without the celebrities, who added nothing to the show, IMO.
i saw a few seconds of that show. i was flipping through and saw someone on a stage with a ball gown on and anderson cooper introducing a celebrity and i turned it off.
it is the ass-backwards way of handling subject matter like that. exploit in grand hollywood style people who are as far removed from that as you can get.
i guess if you won't be lured in to celebrity worship, then the celebrities will send missionaries out to co-opt you.
at least that is what i was thinking in the 2 seconds it took me to turn it off.
