On Fox News Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008 Chris Wallace repeats Americans For Job Security talking points verbatim immediately preceding one of their ads airing on the network.

driftglass comes up with the find and keenly observes Wallace's puppet-like devotion to his advertiser:

Wallace (filtered through Driftglass): Apropos of nothing whatsoever, aren’t unions evil? And shouldn’t the Evil Union Card Check program be opposed by all right thinking people who don’t want the destroy the economy? I mean, after all you get secret ballots in Congress. Why is it OK for Congress to have secret ballots and not for workers?

... [O]ne minute later, they went to commercial, [and] I got the shock of the week when the first paid commercial was from an outfit called “Americans For Job Security” repeating VERBATIM the Boehner/Fox Party line “question” that Wallace had awkwardly wedged into the middle of a “news” broadcast not sixty seconds prior.

You get secret ballots in Congress.

Why is it OK for Congress to have secret ballots and not for workers?

Driftglass goes on to provide us with lots of detail about Americans For Job Security -- predictably, a "sham front group that would be better called Corporations Influencing Elections." Be sure to read it all.

Americans for Job Security sounds like Texas being a Right To Work State. It sounds great on the surface, but actually all it means is you can be fired for little or no reason at all.

What about Penn and Teller?

I heard this yesterday and the minute that ad began, my tv was turned off. I had just had enough.

Now some republican group has come out with ads saying, Thank you Sarah Palin. They are going to be running these ads around the country on tv and the guy who is in charge of them says they will run Thanksgiving Day during the football games.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

I got the impression it's some sort of fund raiser but I'm not sure which fund.

Wait, I just googled it and found this.

Americans For Job Security sounds like one of those tricky names bush gave some of his policies. Just the opposite of what it really is.

having any Republicans supporting it is always the opposite.

The Ministry of Truth and all.

These people are pure evil. They are much worse than the slimiest used car dealer.

Rush Limbaugh is what a smart person thinks a stupid bigot sounds like.

For once I agree with the Repubs. We all owe Sarah Palin a debt of gratitude for putting Obama in the White House.

it seems odd that wallace is being criticized for doing his masters bidding, don't employees do that?
why doesn't this blog go after the network?

Bluegal aka Fran's picture

Crooks and Liars never goes after FOX news. We'll try harder, maybe after the new year. /snark

oh really's picture

John Amato is always totally in agreement with Fox News. I've never seen a bigger cheerleader in my life. /snark cubed

Why is it OK for Congress to have secret ballots and not for workers?

I dunno Chris. Why is it OK for Congress to have government-provided health care and not for workers?

Now if a Dem, any Dem, would just say that next time a Con cries about universal healthcare.

for Congress!

Do it!

I'd never get through the vetting process. Oh, and I'm dangerously unqualified.

"you had your shot and you drove our country into the ditch. Now get in the back, shut your mouths and let us pull this thing out."

Chris is a tool? I never knew! Wow the things you learn when you watch Fox!

Do you think he got paid for the "endorsement"? Or did he have to pay a royalty for using their "song and dance"?

"Americans for Job Security" sounds like a doubleplusgood idea to me! Now it is time for my afternoon Minute of Hate. Later.

MsJoanne's picture

You best make that Two Minutes of Hate or you will be in deep doo doo. And please do hate sufficiently. Posers will be loved deeply.

Now that the election is over, many of these media "experts" are trying to find some reason for their audience to watch them. So they either poke Obama's plans with a stick or they rattle on about one thing or another. They can no longer rely on political races creating a feud for everyone to fight over. Bottom line, no one cares any more what they have to say about just about anything.

I don't know about anyone else but I am completely sick and tired of everyone trying to continue the fight between the parties. It would be nice to have some down time to just enjoy the fact that bush will be out of the oval office in a few weeks and we can hopefully watch our country begin to heal, if in no other way than just a new way forward.

Funny, I just heard that ad on CNN one minute ago, and was thinking just how deceptive it is, starting with the name of this anti-union corporate controlled organization. I have always perceived job security to be a major concern of the unions, not the employers. Then of course the body of the ad itself was full of deception, trying to get support for an issue essentially by pretending to support the other side of it.

Reprehensible. But is that any surprise coming out of the boardrooms of Corporate America?

"In theory theory and practice are alike. In practice they are very different."

One of the most important things Obama needs to do, is reinstate the Fairness Doctrine so that these lying Orwellean scumbag corporations can no longer pull this shit.

This is nothing but predatory advertising.

that will only affect broadcast teevee.

Cable would continue to dispense lies.

...As well as being customers. Why aren't unions seen as part of the operation of 'free market'? Aren't groups of people combining their market power to demand more for their services part of a free market? What, free market only applies to companies selling products? BS. Unions are an expression of a free market, not anti-free market.

dnegri's picture

Whenever a Republican claims to be doing something to "help" union workers, the workers should head for the nearest cover.

dnegri's picture

And I would add, any time you have a right-wing group using the word "America(ns)" or "Patriots" or "Democracy", everyone should head for the nearest cover.

Finally, here's how the Republicans spin our current problems. One: Banks and financial institutions are imploding as a result of their own bad practices. The villains: Poor black people who got bad mortgages because of a 1975 law. Two: The automobile industry is imploding as a result of their own bad practices. The villains: the UAW and its greedy members. So, it's all collapsing and Republicans manage to blame it on poor and blue collar people. And letting their own backers, banks and CEOs off the hook.
Amazing.

AJS does not disclose or discuss its membership. Too often politicians or the media define an organization or message not by the merits of the argument, but rather by the perception of the people associated with it. We would rather the people decide on merits instead of name-calling.

AJS is the only independent, bi-partisan, pro-business issue advocacy organization in America. Established in 1997, AJS promotes issues that strengthen the American economy.

Okay, I'm confused. Congress represents me and millions of other people. I want to know what it is doing in my name. So, I don't think it should allow secret ballots. However, I am an individual. I contribute my single thoughts to the whole. I don't want necessarily want people knowing what that is. I would indeed feel intimidated at times. Ergo, I want my secret ballot. I'm glad that is what I get. This way I don't get stoned for voting liberal in a highly conservative area. Could somebody please explain to me why this is a bad thing - or am I just misunderstanding this?

my humble take on this: Republicans are deserting this sinking stinkin' ship faster than the blink of eye. It's time to disassociate themselves with anything that still remotely wreaks of GW and his corrupt and very incapable administration. So they run, with the thought that the further they are from ties to GW the better their political lives. Again, that's as obvious as any of the truisms that are clearly evident to anyone wishing to observe at this point.

Yet, here we have the political hacks such as Wallace, too dumb to realize that he must distance himself from the previous administration, so he keeps on with what he perceives is his saving grace, the company line. it's worked for the last 8 years, why not now. Watch him go down the porcelain fixture. hopefully his ilk and supporters will accompany him. Rush get ready for mr. Toad's wild ride. who deserves it more than you?
