NEW YORK (AP) -- U.S. companies remain generous with the perks they give to CEOs, including some that are unfathomable to the average American worker: chauffeured cars, bodyguards, club memberships and free travel in company jets.
The median value of these and similar perks rose nearly 7 percent in 2008, according to an Associated Press analysis of regulatory filings from 309 companies in the Standard & Poor's 500. The increase came even as overall CEO compensation fell 7 percent to $7.6 million.

I'm all for the the American dream, but I think our economic system has some serious and fatal problems. It's supposed to work something like reward being proportional to the amount of risk and hard work put forth. Now, it's nothing but greed, cronyism, and passing the responsibility for screw ups onto other others. This type of avarice embraced by corporate America is going to eventually lead to social resentment and political instability. History has shown that economic aristocracies lead to revolution.

Don't underestimate the amount of power the media has in disseminating false and misleading information.
How else can you explain why, after being raped by banks, Americans turn not on their attacker, but on the police that came to rescue them?
Sure, Congress is controlled by lobbyists. But if the media did their job, lobbyists would be powerless and these greedy scumbags would be in jail.
I used to think the same thing, but if you talk to working people and the poor long enough, you can get them to change their minds. They know the truth, but are just too afraid and shamed to say it, hearing the blathering and propaganda from the boob-tube all day keeps them hiding what they really feel.
Try talking to some of them, you'd be surprised.
I recommend though, not wasting your time on white males over the age of 50 or white women who are also pro-lifers. They are entrenched, but they make up a small minority.
Perhaps then some kinda law that prevents the airwaves for being used to disseminate propaganda... Hmm I wonder if its been tried before? ;P
Bring back fairness and put tighter controls on TV to prevent it being used as a weapon against the poor.

This just makes me sick. CEO salaries and perks are, I think, set by the board of directors. As a shareholder of several stocks I get the annual accounting sheet BUT never get any notification of increases regarding the CEO. Maybe it's about time these perks and increases are presented to the shareholders in plain english. I seriously doubt shareholders would vote yes to line the pockets of a CEO whose company has dropped in value.
Thus they can over rule whatever they want.

Those poor little CEOs need their bodyguards. If the people decided it was about time to tear them to shreds, their families would be lucky to even have body parts to bury at the funeral.
As far as I'm concerned, CEO getting lynched in the streets = photo op.
The gross majority of these CEO's are nothing more than a bunch of "Eddie Barzoons". Can't think of anything that sums up our situation more than Al Pacino monologue in the Devil's Advocate.

They've created it. Wealthy white people living behind gated communities, protected by private security firms and corporate-financed bodyguards. They even have their own private army called Blackwater, financed almost entirely by the American taxpayer.

Honestly, who would take a six figure job in this economy if it didn't have these perks? They HAVE to offer them or else the positions could go unfilled for years.
