No, this is not an Onion story. On C-SPAN's call in show this morning, a woman named Bunny from Parsons, Kansas, said she was so disappointed by the Senate's health care vote that she took down her Christmas tree. And it seems like her call was not a prank.
It wasn't just Bunny's tree that went. "I have taken my Christmas wreath off my house. I have taken all the lights down," she said. "This is supposed to be a nation under God, and it isn't. They absolutely have ruined Christmas."

That was my thought. "under god" is relatively new and certainly not Constitutional. Isn't that a double whammy for Conservatives?

I never say "under God" when I recite the pledge, I just pause. I've taught my kids to do the same. It was McCarthyist nonsense to insert it into the pledge.
"In God We Trust" goes back a bit further to the post Civil War years. That statement has no place on our government buildings or currency, either.
The slogan on the coins does go back as far as you said, but it went back and forth with every new issue. Some like the nickel were extremely erratic, leaving the coin in the 1880's reappearing in 1935.
It didn't become official though for all coins to have it until 1955.
Some like Theodore Roosevelt prefered E Pluribus Unum and thought the other bordered on sacrilege.

So let me get this straight: According to this lady, Congress is sullying the holiday, the celebration of the birth of Christ, a figure considered to have championed the underprivileged, by passing a bill that helps underprivileged people have access to health care they didn't have before.
