Conservative real estate titan Donald Trump told Fox News Monday that Republicans should make sure President Barack Obama isn't re-elected by refusing any comprehensive deal to raise the debt ceiling, even going so far as to suggest that the country should be allowed to default on its debts.

"Obama doesn't want the six-month extension because that almost ensures he doesn't get re-elected," Trump told Fox & Friends hosts Steve Doocy, Gretchen Carlson and Brian Kilmeade. "I think, frankly, the Republicans would be crazy, unless they get 100 percent of the deal that they want right now, to make any deal."

"The fact is that unless Republicans get 100 percent of what they want -- and that may include getting rid of Obamacare which is a total disaster -- they should not make a deal other than a minor extension which would take you before the elections which would ensure that Obama doesn't get elected, which would be a great thing."

"If you look at the average American when they’re polled, it seems the President of the United States gets less of the blame than Republicans do, but you see Republicans with maximum leverage," Kilmeade observed.

"Absolutely. The Republicans have the leverage. I don't care about polls. When it comes time to default, they're not going to remember any of the Republicans' names. They are going to remember in history books one name, and that's Obama," Trump opined.

Surprisingly/sickeningly I sort of agree with Trump on one of his points.. we have a nasty habit to assume that if GOP destroy the country, of course US citizens will be well informed enough to pick apart the fog, the failure of the media, and the he-said/she-said debates and know who exactly was responsible.

I'm not so optimistic. I think most Americans have no idea what's going on.. I can testify to this, I had to spend the entire pre-Firework show last week explaining to my parents and their friends (fairly intelligent people) what the debt ceiling is.

Now if they had no idea what the debt ceiling is, do you think they'll know who to blame if their retirement age is raised? If their social security and medicare are cut? If the US ends up defaulting on it's loan? I don't.

So, I agree with Trump. GOP -can- destroy the entire country and not get blamed for it, as he admits. He must be very proud, by the way.

As a real estate mogul, Trump sees opportunity in snapping up a lot of prize properties for a song if we Default on the Debt, Add to that, his ability to raise the rent of his tenants, and it's no surprise he doesn't fear a Default (even pushing for it.)

I was just at the gym and an unoccupied elliptical had Fox News on. The chyron said something like:

"GOP: Obama not worried about debt, only re-election"

Yet here we are, where theme on Fox is how Republicans should just worry about screwing Obama. Who is really playing games with politics here? Doesn't sound like Obama.

...worried about reelection. As long as they signed the norquist pledge, don't raise taxes, cut ss benefits and make sure obama is a one term president, they'll all be reelected.
We seem to be very good at not voting for our best interests; we vote for hope and change, we get obama. We voted and bush was appointed. Why would anyone worry about reelection? republican'ts get reelected; democrats get trashed if they do get elected.

The headline does not match what this turd actually said. The quote is:

The way I read it he is saying only give a minor extension to push this until next year, as opposed to the headline of " Force US default to make sure Obama is not re-elected".

When the average guy does it it is considered yet another abuse by those shifty- deadbeat entitlement takers and by the lazy unemployed (mostly liberal) losers- who got too greedy for their own good and should have never been granted credit.

They probably lied to get the credit in the first place and it's the banks who are the victims of fraud.

due to catastrophic illness. He uses Chapter 11 for restructuring loan payments and lowering interest rates on his loans. One bnky is unfortunate, 2 is stupidity and 3 times+ is a business plan.
And his private wealth is protected. Chapter 11 is bnky for organisations to get a new plan, Chap 13 is for individuals to restructure, and chapter 7 is liquidation and dismissal of debt, after assets have been applied to the debt.

Edwin's picture

So Trump is actually one of those deadbeats the right hates. But, when the super-rich do it it's a genius business strategy.

That's why they say if you owe $100,000 the bank owns you, but if you owe $10,000,000 you own the bank. Just threaten bankruptcy and offer to pay only pennies on the dollar.

And how would doing those things have destroyed Republican credibility? Those who care about facts already know that the Republicans aren't credible. Those who are still Republicans don't care about whether the actions of the last regime were ethical. That's not Obama's fault. It's silly to just take a neener neener attitude to conditions in this country just because you are still feeling bitter about Bush getting away with war crimes. I'm pissed about what the last POTUS got away with, but that doesn't mean I want to see things get even worse by allowing yet another Republican get elected President.

We have not been scuffling in this waste-howling wildness for the right to be stupid.
Toni Cade Bambara

JHR1956's picture

It seems to me that Republican voters would be far better off if they stopped worrying so much about what other people are doing. Rather than taking care of themselves and their families, and voting for candidates who have their best interest at heart, they are so consumed with the fear that someone is getting some sort of handout that they aren't getting?

They are terrified that an illegal immigrant is drawing social security, or that someone who loses their job walks away from their mortgage because their house is worth less than the loan; or God forbid, they get some sort assistance from the government. We've all heard callers on C-Span railing about the family in front of them with a grocery cart full of food who pays with food stamps.

This isn't about eliminating the social safety nets; it's about someone who's collecting benefits that they don't feel are deserving. Basically, they are taking the approach that if I can't get a handout, neither can you.

These people need to stop worrying so much about what others have, and instead show concern for what others don't have.
