Gawker obtained a training video that Target uses to warn its employees about the danger of joining a union.

The 13-milute video titled "Think Hard Before You Sign" is hosted by Doug and Maria, two actors posing as Target employees.

"We're a target because we're a threat to unions," Doug claims. "The unions that represent grocery store workers."

"When we take business away from unionized grocery stores that means they need fewer employees," Maria continues.

"And fewer grocery store employees means fewer union members. And fewer members? Well that's a problem for the union business. That's right, I said business. Union business," Doug adds.

"With a union you no longer have your own voice. Have a great suggestion? You can't take it directly to your manager. You have to go through the union layers. Need help with a problem? Same thing. Someone else will do the talking for you. And there's no guarantee you'll like what they have to say. Guarantees. Guarantees and promises. That's something else you might hear from a union. Unions often make big promises about wages and benefit increases if the team member will only sign their card. Those are promises they can't keep," Maria insists.

"The risk of getting a union with out a vote, big promises that can't be kept, pressure on guests not to shop at our stores, for all those reasons and a whole lot more please think hard before you sign any card or petition," Maria concludes.

A complete transcript of the video is available here.

Emancipate yourself from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds--Bob Marley

with respect, pays them a living wage, you know the kind of wage that allows a person to pay their bills on time, maybe buy a house, send their kids to college, not go deeper and deeper into debt as each year passes, has a good benefits program, decent vacation time, sick days, things like that, well then I suppose they don't need a union. They do offer those things right?

Everytime I'm getting shoddy service (which is most of the time) at a Home Depot, Best Buy, Canadian Tire, Future Shop and the like, I always ask "Do you guys have a union?" Knowing damn well they don't but I just want to point out that it is a myth that union members are lazy and don't give a toss about customers and conversly non-union places have awesome service and employees are hard working.

I've worked in the same field for about 25 years, 15 years non-union/10 years as a member. Unions are better for the working person. Nothing's perfect but having an organization backing you is a lot better than going it alone against a manager who has their own agenda.

taurus, you want to see the eptiome of your statement about customer service? Go to a Wal-Mart. Most of the employees there couldn't tell you where a candy bar is if it's sitting on the shelf two feet in front of you! They have 40 checkout lanes, but only 4 of them are open anytime other than Saturdays (even though there are 15 people standing in each lane, each one with a month's worth of groceries in their cart). And this is because they can't hire somebody full-time, so they'll only let them work 28 hours per week (on the clock...they're required to work overtime OFF THE CLOCK...they've been caught doing that several times!)

And this is all because of Wal-Mart will FIRE YOU if they catch you even talking about supporting Unions!

When one works for a fair and decent organization with automatic increases in wages, Unions are not necessary.
Companies are against unions because they have to pay the union scale .... The worker has to pay union dues.
Many companies are not happy with the unions demands and transfer their business outside of this country ... to no unions and cheap labor.
A big reason all our manufacturing and businesses left USA.

...their business offshore, that's their right. Just don't let me hear them saying they care about America or it's citizens. They care only about their bottom line. Also, we should not be giving them tax breaks to do so.

WWFSMD?

a 'non-union' one'? Which is exactly what our company did...in an official email.

My friends sister works at Target.

28 hours a week, no benefits, and at her 2nd year review, she got a $.06 an hour raise.

I am not kidding, after two years she got a 6 cent per hour raise.

Yeah Tea bagger morons, unions are definitely the problem.

If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.

Never mention a Union where my wife works, it will get you fired. My dear wife has worked at the same factory job for the last 4 years without a raise. Her rate of pay is $8.60 an hour and has been since August 2007. Deduct a small 401(k) a small $5 a week "savings" plan through our local credit union. State tax, local taxes and fees, and for the cherry on top $50 a week for health insurance, which won't pay to fit her with orthopedic shoes, that will allow her to work without pain for their sorry asses for a pittance.
No food stamps, two people with an income that exceeds $1600 a month is ineligable in our state. Our combined income is a fraction over the minimum. There are thousands of others out there in America that battle the same thing as we do week after week. If only we could get them to vote in their own interest. Not the interest of their corporate master, corrupt politician, preacher........and so it goes.

Jaye, you're an IDIOT!

You make the claim that Unions are the reason why all the manufacturing has left the U.S.

Please explain to me what facts prove your argument. So, while manufacturing jobs have been outsourced overseas for the past 40+ years, private-sector union membership (as a percentage of the total private sector jobs) has also declined in the U.S. EVERY YEAR SINCE 1953!

So, if your assertion was correct, Unions should DOMINATE the private sector. But they don't, and you just proved yourself an idiot.

....or does Doug sound like he's been smoking something?

Slurred, slow speech.
