Steele: GOP should reach out to gay, pro-choice voters
Michael Steele, the new chairman of the Republican National Committee wants the GOP to reach out to candidates who support gay marriage and are pro-choice. Steele told Fox's Chris Wallace that it was "important" to reach out to those voters.
WALLACE: You are one of the co-founders of something called the Republican Leadership Council which supports candidates who favor abortion and gay rights.
STEELE: Yes.
WALLACE: Does the GOP needs to do a better job of reaching out to people who hold those views?
STEELE: I think -- I think that's an important opportunity for us, absolutely. Within our party we do have those who have that view as well as outside and my partnership with Christy Todd Whittman was an effort to build a bridge between moderates and conservatives.

I am in the south, he was a young guy. The south is splitting, and the Republicans with it. So the state party here was reaching out already last year. I think the governors in states other than Alaska and Louisiana gave the election the the what-for. You can't win a statewide election in NC on the white conservative vote alone, it's gone, maybe forever.
I think the splitting of the south on views will split the Republican party if they stay so focused on this area. I'm going to need a lot of popcorn to watch this ...

There's a big difference between 'reaching out' and actually supporting those people in those groups. Reaching out to a gay person is accepting the lifestyle. Reaching out to minorities means including their cultures and their neighborhoods in the discussions. That means that money for defense needs to get cut. That means in the poorer neighborhoods and many minorities live withing the poorer communities because many are immigrants...it means helping the poor rise out of poverty. It means paying for health care not just for the children who need it but for the parents who need to remain healthy so that they can work.
Are the Republicans going to 'reach out'? I don't think so.

The truth of the matter is that our "loyal opposition" has, as a matter of faith, held that capital gains tax cuts are the global panacea for all the world's ills. It is, in their universe, akin to apostasy- bordering on blasphemy- to propose raising this critical rate.
