Conservative MSNBC host Joe Scarborough said on Sunday that former House Speaker Newt Gingrich's thumping of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in South Carolina Saturday showed that the Republican base was "revolting" against the party establishment.

During a round table discussion on NBC's Meet the Press, Chuck Todd explained that Gingrich's win was "about Mitt Romney."

"He hasn't made the sale to conservatives," Todd observed. "And losing in South Carolina, he can't dismiss it. This is the heart and soul of the conservative movement, the folks that show up at telephones, that knock on the doors -- and he doesn't have their support."

"There's no doubt about it," Scarborough agreed. "The party base is revolting, but they are revolting against the Washington Republican establishment anointing Mitt Romney."

"Just like Herman Cain was not about Herman Cain. It was a rejection of Mitt Romney. Rick Perry, a rejection of Mitt Romney. Michele Bachmann, a rejection of Mitt Romney. Newt Gingrich wave one, a rejection of Mitt Romney. Now we have Newt Gingrich wave two, a rejection of Mitt Romney."

Scarborough continued: "Mitt Romney could attack Newt for not being a conservative because Newt is not a conservative. Google it! We [Republicans] ran him out of Congress in 1998 because he sold us out on taxes, he sold us out on spending, he went to the floor and he sided with Democrats on his last speech, calling us the perfectionists caucus. He called us jihadists. He's not a conservative, he's an opportunist. But here is the problem: So is Mitt Romney."

..the laughably low ratings of Morning Joe is a revolt against Joe Scarborough.

Somebody should point that out to Joe.

. . . who, like Gingrich, was run out of Congress in disgrace and scandal? These assholes should just go away after they shut the hell up.

..what Newt & Scarborough have in common (besides being highly obnoxious right wingers) is their "female problems."

Scarborough = dead female intern guy while Newt = the serial wife abandonment guy.

But if I were to point how how nearly every right wing politician (and right wing radio host for that matter) has misogyny issues, I would just be stating the obvious.

I'm not so sure that Mitt is the anointed one. I've gotten the feeling that the PTBs never really wanted him - he was rich enough that he didn't have to cower and genuflect before them in order to play ball. He could buy his own ball. That said, I think they'd prefer him now because he IS the only one with the increasingly remote possibility of beating Obama, so naturally the neocons swarmed him into acceptability - for the duration.

Given that Newt isn't even on the VA or MO ballots, it strikes me as a near statistical impossibility for him to win the nomination - not to mention all the extra baggage and general disinterest in the position he brings with him. Smart money doesn't throw good money after bad. Newt, Ricky, and drronpaul are mere distractions so the MSM can gin up "controversies" to bloviate about 24/7 until the convention. Those tampons don't sell themselves.

gtharby's picture

I don't believe he will win, but I disagree that it is a near statistical impossibility. Polling out of Flordia shows Newt with a sizable 8 point lead after his performance in SC, and if he happened to win that, it's winner take all and it completely cancels out one of the two states he is not on the ballot. More so, there are plenty of sizable states across the south where Newt can run up sizable wins, such as Texas and Georgia. He also would be competitive in populated states such as Ohio/Pennsylvania/Indiana which would be vital for him to win. While most states may be proportional this time around, plenty of states are similar to South Carolina, where it's effectively winner take most, and Newt was able to pick up 23 of 25 delegates with his 12 point win.

If Newt doesn't collapse (which he very well may), or if Romney continues to self destruct, Newt does have a meaningful path to getting the nomination, it's not really a near statistical impossibility. And one must remember the majority of the party does have this hate of Romney, which does give some benefit to Newt.

I'm surprised the Republican base isn't revolting against the TSA charade at airports, the loss of our Bill of Rights, NDAA, and everything else we've been seeing happen. I'm surprised more of us aren't in a state of revolt over this shit.

I think the reason they aren't, is because the republican base is full of frightened, near-sighted hypocrites.

As for us, i think only if and when we are all aware of what is going on, we will be able to change things. It is up to the rest of us that are aware to get that awareness up to critical mass. The media will not do it for us.

Scarborough makes a good point. One of the first things you learn when making an exit is not to piss in the out basket. It'll come back to bite you in the ass. Newt has done this numerous times and he has few friends in the Republican party. That's what you get when the only loyalty you have is to yourself.

I was going to say this is utter bullshit and Scarborough just pulled it out his ass but I will just say that i disagree. These people are not revolting against anything. 75% DO NOT LIKE ROMNEY. When he gets anything more than 25% it is because a couple % think they should vote for him but still do not like him. Romney cannot get more than 25% to like him. he is an obvious phony and he is not likable. But they are not revolting. Revolting? Phewt....

I find the Newt much more disgusting than Romney. Fat little toad, Funny that he was only in this for the money and even took a vacation because he was not committed and then his staff quit on him. I can only hope that SC with all it's rascists and other assorted fools and that has the head fool Demint as a Senator is not representative of the US. Why is it that the first three states are Iowa, NH, and, SC and are given so much importance ? None of which seem like an average US state and in total only equal 1.3 percent of the votes for the Republican nomination.

"Pinga y Pinga". What a laugh riot. These guys are to journalism what Sarah Palin is to intelligence.

of it from the left and the so-called liberal media. dipshits like scarborough dare not mention limbaugh or limbaugh will mention him and thousands of dittohead teabaggers will attack him and his bosses.

limbaugh defended cain until he gave up and cain immediately dropped, then he skewered newt and rick for their vulture capitalism, they went down, and then gingrich surged when he defended newts philandering like he did cain's sexual assault accusers.

team limbaugh, on 1000 think tank-coordinated radio stations have the biggest LIKE and HATE buttons on the planet and the left hasn't figure it out yet.

That to me says a lot. When a high-profile senator from an important early primary state endorses "none of the above." Of course, the answer is he doesn't want any of those jackwads dragging him down with them. Gov. Haley is probably wishing she had done the same thing.

The press needs these stories to keep the process interesting. Remember PUMA four years ago? Sure Romney will hit some rough patches, but he will overwhelm the other candidates with his money and organization, the GOP will unite behind him in their Obama hatred, and it will be a very tough election. The pundits as usual are blathering idiocies out of their collective anuses.
