Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum became the latest Republican presidential candidate to misspeak about Africa Tuesday.

During CNN's debate on foreign policy, Santorum said that Africa was a country, instead of a continent.

Former Bush Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, who now serves as a scholar for the American Enterprise Institute, asked the candidates how their policies would promote growth in poor countries.

"Well, as the author of The Global Fund bill and the Millennium Challenge in the United States Senate, and as someone who worked with the president on [the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief] PEPFAR to deal with the issue of AIDS in Africa, I believe it's absolutely essential," Santorum replied.

"Africa was a country on the brink of complete meltdown and chaos."

But Santorum is in good company.

At a CNN debate in Las Vegas earlier this year, Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann seemed not to know that Libya was in Africa.

"Now with the president, he put us in Libya," Bachmann declared. "He is now putting us in Africa. We already were stretched too thin, and he put our special operations forces in Africa."

After the 2008 presidential election campaign, aides revealed to Fox News reporter Carl Cameron that Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin was also unaware that Africa was a continent.

She "didn't understand that Africa was a continent, rather than a series, a country just in itself," Cameron explained.

Except Huntsman who is as about interesting as counting blades of grass.

If Huntsman became "the candidate" and all these other republican jackass clowns stepped out into oblivion where they belong, would you consider his ideas as opposed to Obama's?

It's the baggage(the republican party) he will bring that scares me.

I still have the audio clip of Bush in 2004 saying "Africa is a nation..."

Not exactly a revelation, but I guess it's good to be reminded once again how completely and utterly fucked we would be if any of these mental midgets were to take the White House.

While all of these Republicans are shitbag corporate whores...I can't deny their cunning. I could argue that common criminals aren't very bright either, but they find new and ingenious ways to steal from society all the time. "Africa is a country"?? Completely emblematic of the type of people running in the Republican Primary...one the one hand, they're dumb as fuck. "Social Security is a Ponzi scheme", "Unions caused the recession". "Corporations are people my friend". On the other hand, they're all clever (read: coniving) enough to be a player in a national election. This is Twilight Zone shit. A paradox or an oxyMORON if you will.

a troll will be here to remind us how then-Sen. Obama, after exhaustive campaigning, said he'd gone to 57 states, as a way to defend right-wing stupidity.

Didn't Snow Snooki (R-Quitter) also claim that Africa was a country? I can't remember. Right-wingers are always saying something stupid.

Dave K's picture

= six minutes after you posted!

That didn't take long!

Smith_1's picture
Yep

Trolls are sooooo boring and predictable. It's one thing to get mixed up after an exhausing tour, and quite another to call Africa a country after other stupid right-wing pols have previously been ridiculed for making the same mistake.

At least Obama realized he'd made the mistake and corrected himself the next day. Right-wingers on the other hand just dig themselves deeper. Think Snow Snooki when she insisted that Paul Revere's midnight run, with gunshots and bells, was to warn the Brits that the colonists had guns and they were going to protect their 2nd Amendment rights.

You rightwing cocksuck@rs NEVER deal with the issue at hand...deflect, distract and point elsewhere because you know that the fact is this lot of Presidential candidates are a total humiliation.

But, but look at the Dems!

Lol.

The best way to deal with right-wingers like him and others. Even though most of us know better than to listen to these fools, there's still no reason why we have to subject ourselves to their verbal diarrhea. Ignore the twerp(s) and be done with it.

the quality of life in the countries they govern. Could you give me the name of few countries where the government is libertarian. Someone told me Somalia because it doesn't have much of a government but that couldn't be true since it isn't a paradise.

Do only stupid people become RePugniScums or does becoming a RePugniScum cause stupidity? Or both?

In 2000 I would ask people if they would vote for someone as dumb as me for President and they would say no. Then I would point out that GW Botch is dumber than me and they refused to believe it.

We do not need another 4 years for GW Botch style stupidity camping out in the White House.

These RePugniScum candidates are all dumber than a bucket of pig snot.

Most of them said they would privatize the TSA. The primary reason seemed to be getting rid of the unions. What could possibly go wrong with putting the lowest bidder, or your Blackwater buddy, in charge of a critical component of domestic security?
Also, one of their think tank members, Paul Wolfowitz, asked a question about national security. Paul Wolfowitz?? Really??

he messed this country up bad. These idiots are even dummer than him. They will messed things up even worse. Instead of two wars we will have three. And instead of the great recession we will have the great depression.

oh really's picture

Yeah, right, Wolfie is a "conservative scholar." Of course, a "conservative scholar" is something different from a traditional scholar. Conservative scholars begin with a conclusion and then selectively fashion "evidence" to support that conclusion. I say "fashion evidence" because for a conservative, evidence needs to be shaped, doctored, and manipulated so that it fits the desired narrative.

Other names for "conservative scholar": liar; propagandist; hack; criminal; idiot.

oh really's picture

I'm going to give Santorum the benefit of the doubt and assume he knows Africa is a continent and he simply misspoke. However, this isn't the first time I've heard a conservative refer to Africa as a country and it may be that conservatives think so little of Africa that it is easy to dismiss it as only a country.

Still, I'll give Santorum a pass on this one, but what about all the other complete nonsense he believes and spews. That can't be ignored and it reveals Santorum to be a bigot and a fool.

Liberal AND Proud's picture

I also think too much is being made of this. He's guilty of far more egregious errors and lunatic policy positions.

What does strike me about him is how much he is the typical career politician. He KNOWS he's cooked as far as this campaign goes. The fact is that his political career was over when he was exposed as a carpetbagger. The guy has no skills, no work experience and it seems to me has lived such a sheltered life that he really has no clue how to conduct his own life. I would ususally be sympathetic of such a sad figure, but he has been such a condescending, amoral, hypocritical asshole over the course of his public life that I could not care less if he curled up and died.

We all know that Rick Santorum is an idiot. And Herman Cain is an ignoramus. And Michele Bachmann is a mega-moron. So what? All modern-day Republicans are nitwits. They have to be to believe what they do and spew what they spew. Concentrate on that, not slips of the tongue and brain farts. We all have those. And amusing as they are, don't we have more important things to talk about?

BigD145's picture

"Now with the president, he put us in Libya," Bachmann declared. "He is now putting us in Africa. We already were stretched too thin, and he put our special operations forces in Africa."

This quote, all by itself, has no confusion. The "putting us in Africa" is just a restatement of the first sentence with a broader geographical definition of where Obama put troops. Bachmann was wrong in saying "now". The US has been in the African continent for quite some time. It's one of the half dozen+ wars we're involved in.

That was the funniest thing I've read or seen since that Ridiculousness marathon with Rob Dyrdek earlier today; It's completely made me forget the latest obtuse know-nothingism protracting from Richy Rich Santorum!

P.S.-C & L folkies, blacka nd white, is it ANY surprise that a Republican or Tea Partier has no concept of Africa being a continent versus a country. These people blow their noses on and use the (original intent) U.S. Constitution for toilet paper and napkins, they believe so deeply in ethno-nationalism and 'pro-American' places. Their only understanding of Africa is that it's where all those darkies their ancestors dehumanized and who are government leeches originate, and that's ALL they feel they need to know about it...

President Obama is like the AHCA his administration miraculously passed: marginally helpful, efficient enough to be built upon, and will only become a uniform disaster if Republicans win 2012 & repeal it (with all the other good he did)!

What do you expect from a man who did not even know what state he represented when he was in the Senate? For 12 years Ricky Baby was a Senator from Pennsylvania but never lived in the state for the whole time he was in office. He actually lived in Virginia the whole time. FOr 12 years Virginia had 3 Senators.

However, he had the Pennsylvania school district where he did not live pay to send his children to a charter school. When it was found that he was not a resident of the school district he failed to repay all the many thousands of dollars he received illegally.

Odd how so many (maybe all) Republicans think Africa is a country. Perhaps they've spent a lifetime blocking it out of their minds because black people came from there and it's largely poor.
