Pro-Life Extremist Santorum Says People Are Living Too Long
Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum told supporters in Lancaster, South Carolina Tuesday that the Social Security retirement age had to be increased because "people are living too long."
"Does anybody in this room believe that somebody that 62 years old is too old to work in America today?" Santorum asked. "Social Security was established for people who were too old to work and therefore they needed the support of the federal government."
"Now back in 1936 we probably did and that made sense. Why? Because life expectancy in 1936 was 61. It's now 80... So you have a situation where things have changed, and for our young people it will even be longer. We keep gaining about a month every few years, we gain in life expectancy. And so the idea that we're going to keep the Social Security program locked in on a 1937 actuarial chart makes no sense at all."
He continued: "Do you know what your life expectancy at 65 is? Eighty-five. So you have folks living at least 20 years... Ronald Reagan saw this problem and said, 'Look, we have to do the common sense thing. We have to phase the retirement age back.' What did he do? Twenty-five years from 1983 he started to phase it back. And we did and that's where we are right now. We are in the middle of a phase up to age 76 which will be normal retirement age."
"Well, we need to continue to do that. Not radically. But look at where the revenues are coming in and where the expenses are and we need to adjust everything from cost of living increase for high income seniors is one thing. We can look at retirement ages. And again, you still will be able to retire at 62 and take Social Security, you'll just get a slightly smaller benefit. Why? Because we can't afford the benefit structure we have because people are living too long."

.
"That's fu*#ing retarded."

That was the sound of the AARP running away from you so fast it broke the sound barrier.
But they will. I'll be patient.

But he is a republican, what else could you expect?
Quit calling him that. He's anti choice. He believes the death penalty is a good thing and supports the warring. Shutting down access to abortion causes women to die.
That is nowhere NEAR pro life. When that term is used, you're using the phrase they chose to describe themselves and are allowing them to frame the debate.

It's just a bad term. At least, stick it in quotes.

"Does anybody in this room believe that somebody that 62 years old is too old to work in America today?" Santorum asked.
Try actually having a job, Mr. Santorum. You will find that workers get forced out of their jobs by age 55 because they "become a drain on productivity".
I wouldn't expect a carpet bagger like you to know what is actually going on in the world. You haven't had a permanent address in decades.
I'm now convinced that the blogosphere has it wrong. The frothy mixture is clearly your brains.
Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.
is gonna' volunteer to go to Wyoming, or wherever Darth is shacking up these days, and pull his plug?!?
And, aren't these the same people who flew from all over the country to stand by Terri Schaivo's bedside and tell us we needed to keep her alive - no matter the cost??? Even against her/her family's wishes?
We in PA were once smart enough to get rid of Ricky.....though many were dumb enough to elect Toomey;
his views are not different, he's just smart enough not to be spouting them all over, all the time.

Hmm, does anyone else remember Social Security being robbed for that little thing known as the S&L Crisis and I believe a war or 2?
Let's raise the eligibility age to 100. Ooh, the savings, eh?

"Does anybody in this room believe that somebody that 62 years old is too old to work in America today?"
Yes.
If someone is blessed enough to still have the health and vigor to be able to work, then by all means, they should be allowed to keep on keepin on.
But dragging yourself into work every day and hanging on until retirement, praying for full benefits and that they don't find a way to chuck you before you are is not the same thing as working in your prime. And believe me, when your average person is working at that age, that's what they're doing.
I think they judge their perception by politicians. Joe Biden is older than my mom and in better health. But I'm sure he doesn't have to wash his own clothes, dishes, and I'm pretty sure he doesn't have MS and if he did, he has a much better healthcare plan (that my mom is helping pay for with taxes out of her retirement money!). I also don't see him trying to control a classroom full of teenagers at his age either.
And my mom is retired but she STILL works part time. She can't afford not to. She does home instruction for teens who are pregnant or ill and can't attend school. She is looking forward to her second retirement at 65 and these assholes want to make her wait another two years! WTF?
No. 65 is old enough. Hell, 60 is old enough. It's long past time we started planning for people living longer instead of pretending that everyone is healthy enough to work until they're damn near 70.
Does anybody in this room believe that somebody who has worked for 45+ years SHOULD have to work any longer if they don't WANT to?
(not arguing. Adding)
Ronald Reagan saw this problem and said, 'Look, we have to do the common sense thing. We have to phase the retirement age back.' What did he do? Twenty-five years from 1983 he started to phase it back
Maybe I've finally blown my last functioning brain cells but can anyone make sense of what this moron is saying? Ronald Reagan is scaling back the retirement age, 23 years after he left office?? WTF?? Even St Ronnie of RayGUNS was smart enough to not fuck with Social Security but he's scaling back the retirement age now? When he's (thankfully)dead and gone?? And of course, nobody from the media asked Sick Rick just what the fuck he was talking about, did they?

... and will be 67 by 2027, for anyone born in 1960 or beyond. That was part of the SS overhaul in the 1980s that also jacked up the FICA withholding. It's been moving up from 65 by increments of a few months for several years now, starting with people born in 1937. Anyone born between 1943 and 1954 has a full retirement age of 66, and it moves up in increments between 66 and 67 for those born between 1955 and 1960. People born in 1956, for instance, have a full retirement age of 66 and 4 months. We've already been there, done that, on extending the age. What the deficit vultures are after now is moving it up to 69. This is getting ridiculous.
Even people who are reasonably healthy in their late 60s might not be up to a full day's work, especially if that work requires standing for long periods, lifting, bending, stretching, etc., let alone something as physically demanding as construction or factory work. Your body just isn't as flexible, you're more likely to have arthritis or back trouble or osteoporosis or any number of things that are manageable if you don't overdo it but uncomfortable if you do.
And the very people who are likely to need SS the most just to survive are likely to be those doing more physically demanding work than sitting behind a computer all day and they're likely to drop dead before they can collect. Maybe that's the idea.
And he's also comparing apples to oranges when it comes to life expectancy at birth, which is what they usually mean when they say "life expectancy." Life expectancy at birth when SS was enacted was distorted by the high incidence of infant mortality and deaths from childhood diseases. Once a person reached adulthood or reached age 65 their life expectancy wasn't a whole lot less than it is now for people who reach those milestones. We've gained only a few years.
There's also a life expectancy gap between rich and poor -- the wealthy live something like 5 years longer than the poor, on average. And some segments of the population have not only not increased life expectancy but have seen actual declines in life expectancy since the 1970s or so -- particularly in Appalachia, the Southeast and Texas. So people aren't aging or dying uniformly. To make some people work another couple of years is a death sentence. For others, they can probably work comfortably into their 70s.
.. at BIRTH !!
But the so-called "richest country in the world" ???
Oh Noessss ..
When will government of the people, by the politicians, for the corporations perish from this Earth?
Not soon enough!
If you get sick, hurry up and die.
If you are unemployed, hurry up and die.
If you are old, hurry up and die.
Just don't you dare expect to take one single dime of their tax dollars.
Oh, and by the way. The military expenditure of the United States Department of Defense for fiscal year 2010 was $685 billion dollars.
Not one penny for social programs, but billions for the mechanisms of war.
Someone please explain to me why the republican party still says it is the party of god and morals?
Because the god they worship is a bloodthirsty, vicious bastard, that's why.

At first I thought the caption was just trying to sensationalize, but the goof really said it!
"Now back in 1936 we probably did and that made sense. Why? Because life expectancy in 1936 was 61. It's now 80.
Yeah Rick but you and the rest of your boys are doing your damndest to reverse that trend, aren't you? Fucking prick!

Carousel.... now one of us 'old folks' will reach into the way-back machine and challenge you to remember what movie WAY BACK in the mid-70's became famous as a cult film??? be-member?? They used Carousel as a way of 'ELIMINATING' those over 40 as a 'humane' way to handle the population explosion ?? Any hints???
Logan's Run..... was the sci-fi film, and it's methods now becoming reality at the whim of one of the nation's most ardent buffoons.. Ricky "man-on-dog' Sanatorium.... astounding.. he must have stayed at a REAL old motel before the debate.... still some of those around in Fla...
That spectacle last evening has now made America the laughing stock of the planet.... that's something these clowns can all (and will) beat their chests over... simply stunning...
I seem to remember.
Yes, it was 30. In the book, it was 21. (Great book, by the way. Much better than the film, darker.)

Now that image is just screaming out for some mad photo or video editing skills. Older folks as the people trying to renew, GOP/TeaBirchers in the audience cheering them on (hell, you could even use the audio of bloodthirsty moments from the debate!). It'd be a ready made commercial for the AARP, the Dems or just about anyone else. I like it much better than the "pushing grannie off a cliff in her wheelchair" imagery :-)
Though I must admit I'd kind of like to see all the debate participants up there in the hockey masks and getting fried ;-)
Not everybody has a job where they only have to show up 3 or 4 days a week, or where they get paid to take trips, play golf, get taken to dinner, or hobnob with rich swells on the yacht.
Little ricky needs to spend 10 or 20 years working 5 days a week, 8 hours a day, lubing up the frothy mixture machine or mucking out an irrigation c anal before he starts telling folks how long they "can" work.
Yup...I've even seen 'em sleeping on the job on national television. And not get fired. I've yet to find a job where my boss can watch me sleep on the clock without consequence. Time to wake up Ricky.
Only 40 hours?
Most people don't work 40 hours anymore. They work 50 or 60 or 70. Put him in a job where he has to leave his house at 6 and doesn't get home until 7 or 8. In between, he'll get a half hour for lunch and MAYBE a couple of 10 minute breaks. Let's see how long he lasts.
There's always free cheddar in the mousetrap, baby. - Tom Waits
I will have no truck with Santorum.
After working for 40 years, I'm about ready to hang it up (although there's still some juice left). Although moving the goalposts is beginning to p*ss me off.
However, as much as I find him distasteful, I cannot argue with his core point. We ARE living longer - granted it is the well off, or those who have been able to save wisely - who live longer in comfort. Still I would no rather turn the clock back to 1937 than I would to 1937BC, when life was nasty, brutish and short. I would rather we lift the income cap than the retirement age.
His point wasn't that we're living longer. He's saying we're living TOO long. For a supposed "Christian", he's playing dangerously close to euthanasia here.
There's always free cheddar in the mousetrap, baby. - Tom Waits
... but that's parsing his message. (I had to watch it again)
Don't get me wrong, I can't stand the guy or his messages. But I think we're parsing his words to avoid a basic truth. Social Security is going to have some issues in 20 years or so. The easiest thing we could do is do away with the income cap. The sooner we face that the longer it will last, perhaps long enough to get over the baby boom/balloon?
Santorum is right. The numbers just don't work. When SS was implemented, the median age was 63. It is now 83. The system cannot function anymore. Do away with it.
Falling infant mortality rates skewed the numbers. The relevant measure is life expectancy past 65, which has only gone up eight years since 1900 for white men, and about ten years for white women.
I'm still waiting for someone to point this out to the jerks making the statement about longevity.
Maybe Santorum really wants higher infant mortality rates? Is that what's behind Bachmann's anti-vaccine jihad? More dead children, lower average lifespan, social security saved! Pure Teabagger logic.
I suggest we do away with yours immediately.
....and everything else society offers from roads to schools to hospitals.
Then you can enjoy your rugged life of misery, and once miserable - like all republican sociopath's, you will be happy.
If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.
And what would you put in its place? The fucking "free market"? Or would you rather the old just die penniless under bridges, eating cat food because they can't afford anything else?
There's always free cheddar in the mousetrap, baby. - Tom Waits
Troll alert troll alert
I guess Mr. Santorum himself is proof of that.
I do hope when he reaches 65, he'll go quietly to the euthanasia centers which will likely have been set up by his teabagger buds when they take over the government. But methinks he'll be kicking and screaming like the hypocritical pussy he is.
There's always free cheddar in the mousetrap, baby. - Tom Waits
A new that forces all wealthy people, lobbyists and politicians who have ever advocated reforms designed to kill Social Security to forfeit all of their own Social Security benefits, whether current, future or past (they'll have to pay it back).
In other words, all these folks just dying to be free of social security can just not receive it. More for everyone else.
"People are living too long," explained Rick Santorum, who, a man of his principles, vowed to do his part in fixing the problem by plunging off the nearest skyscraper.
(Feeling a bit cruel here. Something about Santorum brings out the worst in me. After all, "people are living too long" is not really that bad a thing to say in context. I mean, he is not actually angry that people are living too long, or advocating their slaughter. It's just a verbal gaffe. You know what he means.)
Everyone is equally entitled to the pursuit of happiness. Wasn't that once self evident?
Like all republican psychopath's, saying horrid things is beyond their grasp to realize because they are....., well....., psychopath's.
If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.
Demands that the rest of us keep working till we drop dead.
Like pit ponies, we are to have no peace, no golden years, just toil, and the grave.
He is willing to allow us the priviledge of funding his retirement, his healthcare and the eternal war profiteering.
Other than that, we should all just fuck off and die, we're just living too fucking long to be "cost effective".
What I wanna know is, where are all the liberal democrats among the party who should be howling this bullshit down?
Because all I hear from them are echoes of these same rep-thug talking points, while crickets chirp on the subject of gutting war funding and ending the wars.
We'd sure have plenty for SS & Medicare then, not to mention everything else.
Once I was kept on the best of corn and hay
That in the fields did grow or in any meadow gay
But now it is not so, there's no such food at all
I'm forced to nip the short grass that's underneath the wall.
Poor Old Horse, you must die.
Once I was kept all in a stable warm
To keep me tender body and me flesh from all harm
But now I am turned out all in the fields to go
To face all kinds of weather in hail, frost and snow
Poor Old Horse, you must die.
Me hide unto the huntsman so freely I will give
Me body to the hounds, for I'd rather die than live
So shoot him, cut him, skin him, til the hounds will let him go
It's neither fit to ride upon nor yet to pull the plow
Poor Old Horse, you must die...

Who did you meet, my darling young one ?

It wasn't just the lyrics, although the lyrics are heart-wrenching enough. She has this rich, warm voice, and she sings it with a melody that she wrote herself, sadder, more wistful and plaintive than the original. Somehow she evokes the feeling of a faithful animal abandoned and in pain but still gazing back at her beloved master's house. It just kills me. (My favorite dog when I was a kid died outside because my parents wouldn't let him in the house. When we found him, he was still looking at the back door, hoping to be let in. To this day, I can't stand to see an animal abandoned like that.)

Someone remind me... was it Dick Cheney who called Santorum the dumbest man ever to be elected to federal office? Seriously, it was a conservative who said that...anyone? Buehler?
Anyway, how tone-deaf is this guy? We're all nothing to him but stored up productivity. We all just feed the machine. They gotta squeeze all the production they can out of us before we drop over. He can stand there and say this crap totally oblivious to his own inhumanity.
You know what the average "work day" was when we hung around in small agrarian societies? About two hours a day. Everything else was sleeping, eating, propagating the species, goofing off, watching the stars, and propagating the species.
Would it be too conservative to suggest we go back to those basic values? It sounds like fun!
Mark Salter, a top aide to John McCain. It was in response to Santorum's comment that John McCain didn't understand torture. (?!?):

My dad is 85 years old. He "retired" long ago, but he still works every day. He's sick and tired of it, wants desperately to stop working and just enjoy what remains of his life. But he can't. I'm afraid he's going to be at it until he drops dead.

I don't think I'll even make it to SS retirement age. I've already got a heart condition and my health is not great. No money for doctors or any kind of health care other than free clinics. To tell the truth, I don't know that I do want to live that long if this country gets taken over by these vicious miscreants. I love America too much to watch her slide down into ignominy and fascism. I'd rather just dive into the river of death and let myself become whatever the universe wants to make of me.

And how very rude to make Frothy Mixture and his fellow caste members actually contribute to those deadbeats for selfishly deciding to retire before they drop dead.

Who will you deem dispensible? Who will you decide warrants death?

Not the poor, of course. Never the poor. What's the point of creating a serf class if there's no one left to raise your kids and wipe your a$$?
bastards like him for some reason hates people that somehow have escaped dying earlier than 62 and retiring. I think it's because they (the old) VOTE... and continue to vote. For a long time. Thats why anytime the very subject of changing anything about Social Security gets them voted out of office. The SOBs have taken everything else from the working people that now the only thing left is S.S.
Are you freaking kidding me? I work construction, you try doing that until you are 76 yrs old. Seriously wtf are these freaks trying to pull. I am just shy of 45 and already can feel the aches and pains of old injuries comming back to haunt me, can you imagine trying to hang trusses at 70+ yrs. He has obviously never done labor in his life.
It's the new republican plan to save SS: Raise the retirement age to 80!
See, problem solved.
75% of the population will never collect a penny, but they will keep paying into the system their entire lives, so the rich assholes like Sanscrotum can have a super-duper corporate welfare funded MIC, and all of the great things that come along with it - for the Master's of the universe only of course.
If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.
Just who does rick think is going to give a job to those seniors? Ask anybody over 55 that are looking for work right now. There aren't enough jobs for them and not many want to pay the health care insurance for someone that age. That effects their bottom line. But reality is not something wingnuts are familiar with anyway.
I really loathe the sick evil fuckers that listen to these asshole nazi oligarch's, and then go out and vote for them under the guise of being like the founding Father's.
I remember a couple of years ago thinking and saying a Civil War might be the only thing to stop these psycho's and their idiot Teabircher supporters.
Now, it may actually happen if some lunatic like Perry got elected. These sick anti-social fascists' just hate their fellow citizens for no other reason than that they exist.
And the useless Orwellian propaganda on the MSM just acts as though it's business as usual.
If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.
I don't suppose I should confuse Rick with the whole concept of life expectancy at birth (which has increased dramatically since 1935) and life expectancy for folks who have already reached 65 years of age (which has only increased a couple of years since the 30's). I'm sure he believes as St. Ronnie said: "Facts are stupid things".
The original frothy mixture needs a new category. Actually it's an old category that he is in but it needs a more accurate definition. He's not "Pro-Life" at all. Pro life means one is willing to try to make life better for people all through their lives. Instead he needs to be identified as "Pro Birth." Once anyone is born this guy doesn't give a rat's ass about how he lives, what he does unless it is something which makes Santorum's life less comfortable, raise his taxes, cost him money or threaten his life or the value of things about which the Couldn't-get-reelected Senator cares. Nope. He just wants babies cranked out as fast as Moms can produce them. Then they are on their own.
had me laughing hysterically :-)
NOBODY 2012
We are just not dying young. Thanks to advances in Medicine and Science, children no longer die of diseases for which there were no vaccinations back in the good old days.
Oh yes, vaccinations for polio, tuberculosis, even chicken pox and measles, you know the ones that the crazies are ranting about even today; nevermind the new ones that Bachmann et. al so despise.
We may even be actually living somewhat longer due to better cure rates for many diseases, but statistically it makes virtually no differene to how long we live.
The whole "we are living longer, so we should raise the retirement age" is bogus. In some cases it is even counter-productive to Social Security. Young people have been, and always will be the biggest contributors to Social Security. Older workers generally earn higher salaries and the contributions stop at about $106,000. Younger workers will contribute more over the long run. That's how the system was designed to work.
According to Santorum, people live longer, so SS and Medicare/Medicaid cost too much. The reason is that there have been advances in medicine to allow us to live longer. Santorum's solution is to defund SS/Medicare/Medicaid so that the life expectancy numbers go down. When people die at 65, the issue of SS/Medicare/Medicaid is a moot point.
but Dan Savage already demoted him from that.
How can a public figure say something so stupid and not be immediately dismissed as an idiot? Based on the ignorance of voters who will continually vote against their best interest, people like this get elected to office. Once there, its nearly impossible to get them out again. Its like being appointed to the bench. They're guaranteed to collect a fat salary, enjoy numerous perks and have no obligation to perform anything more than vote on legislature and even then there is no accountability for anything beyond that. What a racket!
What we need in this country is performance based accountability for our elected "leaders". What have they accomplished during their term in office? Did it benefit the Americans they swore to serve? I, for one, am sick and tired of legislation that comes from a group of people completely removed from everyday American life. They can pretend to be just like you and me, but the fact remains that unless they're living paycheck to paycheck with the threat of losing their jobs continuously looming over them, its a lie.

Kill yourself immediately! Better yet; sterilize xtians.
Via their obstructionism on any improvements to the healthcare system, they are doing their best to halt and reverse the trend toward longer life, that's for sure.
If people are "living too long", howsabout you start a new trend and go kill yourself. Right now. Tell Jeebus we said "Hi".
Don't worry, we'll be *right* behind ya. ;)
expected life is not 85, it's 83.6. And less if you are male, and even less if you are a black male. No, not a huge difference, but that's why something is priced $9.99 and not just 10 bucks. The number 85 is much more effective than 83.6. And, hey, at 75, a white female still has 12.4 years. Back to the salt mine, doll.
My question would be, do we want 70 year-old firemen? Police? Pilots? Taxi drivers? Fixing the brakes on your car? I had a very elderly biology professor in college (had tenure and refused to retire) who could not remember what we had covered the prior class. And really didn't care. Liked to talk about other stuff. Once before the first test, a fellow student asked what chapters of the textbook would be included. "I don't know - all of it." We complained to the dean, and at the end of the semester everyone was give a full letter grade bump. As I recall he seemed healthy.
Rick has obvioulsy never worked labor. Or in the weather. Or been hurt on the job. Yeah, at 65 you've only worked 40-something years, maybe even close to 50. Slackers.
And over-all life expectancy in the US is 77.9, not 80, which is true for females. For males that drops to 75.4. So, should females have a higher retirement age than males? Can't be lettin' the ladies get more out of the system, aye, Ricky?
I've seen some stuff, man. And some thangs...
I posted this elsewhere but thread was too old and didnt get a response:
I really need someone to explain this to me.
Why is it "OK" for me to have paid in to SS my whole life and not see any return for my investment? Isn't that theft of my investment? Beyond that I looked in to trying to stop SS deductions from my paycheck and its not even possible at my company to separate it out. I am required to contribute.
If its not going to pay out for me I don't want to pay in to it anymore.
Seriously, I need help understanding how politicians can even present this situation where I have no ROI.
Rick Santorum, candidate from the "People Are Living Too Damn Long" party.
There's the alternative for you, Rick Santorum!
Time flies ... Ricky boy! Perhaps you will live to change your tune!
hey Rick ... You pushed everyone's button - Now everyone WANTS YOU TO DIE, NOW!
has already lived too long.
