Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum charged on Monday that President Barack Obama and Democrats were "anti-science" because they refused to exploit the Earth's natural resources to the limits of technology.

Over the weekend the candidate had been criticized for saying that President Barack Obama followed a theology that was not "based on the Bible." He later insisted that he was talking about the president siding with "radical environmentalists."

"I accept the fact that the president’s a Christian," Santorum told CBS host Bob Schieffer on Sunday. "I just said when you have world view that elevates the Earth above man and says that we can’t take those resources because we’re going to harm the Earth -- like things that are not scientifically proven like the politicization of the whole global warming debate.”

The candidate returned to the subject again on Monday at a rally in Steubenville, Ohio.

"But if we don't provide those opportunities for those jobs that can sustain a family, for power in this country that is affordable, not just coal but all energy," Santorum told a crowd of supporters at Froehlich's Classic Corner restaurant. "It drove the economy of Southwestern Pennsylvania, Eastern Ohio for a long time. And through a variety of things -- yes, problems with management, problems with negotiations -- but actually there were bigger problems. The bigger problems of environmental regulation. In many cases environmental regulation that has gone extreme, particularly in this administration."

"What they have done? And I referred to it the other day and I got criticized by some of our, well, less-than-erudite members of the national press corps who have a difficulty understanding when you refer to someone's ideology to the point where they elevate Earth, and they say that, well, men and humanity is just of a variety of different species on the Earth and should be treated no differently."

He continued: "Whereas, we all know that man has a responsibility of stewards of the Earth, that we are good stewards and we have a responsibility to be good stewards. Why? Because unlike the Earth, we're intelligent and we can actually manage things."

"It's so funny that this party that criticizes the right for being anti-science, but when it comes to the management of the Earth, they are the anti-science ones!" the candidate declared. "We're the ones who stand for science and technology and using the resources we have to make sure we have a quality of life in this country and maintain a good and stable environment."

Santorum added that there was "obviously a role for government to play" in environmental regulation, but it was best left to state and local government.

"Freedom isn't to do whatever you want to do, it's to do what you ought to do," he opined.

But the former Pennsylvania senator hasn't always claimed to be on the side of science.

During a debate over stem cell research in 2006, he blasted scientists for having "very little moral compulsion."

"It's a utilitarian, materialistic view of doing whatever they can do pursue their desired goals," he told C-SPAN. "I think someone has to step in and check that."

The then-Pennsylvania senator also sponsored an amendment to the 2001 No Child Left Behind Act that would have required children to learn about creationism in science class. The amendment passed the Senate 91-8, but did not make it into the law signed by President George W. Bush. Proponents of intelligent design still claimed victory because language from the amendment was included in the conference report to explain the purpose of the bill.

"Where topics are taught that may generate controversy (such as biological evolution), the curriculum should help students to understand the full range of scientific views that exist, why such topics may generate controversy, and how scientific discoveries can profoundly affect society," the report said.

It's quite obvious that Frothy Mixture doesn't know what science is. People with stunted minds like Frothy Mixture's shouldn't attempt to engage in subjects they know nothing about.

pick up "The Book of Genesis Illustrated by R. Crumb".

Crumb says he'd originally intended to do a send up of The Book of Genesis, but "I fooled around in the sketchbooks with those ideas and I just, I didn't like how it was working out so I just decided to do a straight illustration job of it. It seemed to me that the original text was so strange in its own way that there was no need to do any sendup or satire of it. My trial efforts to do that seemed lame, it wasn't working out."

Wait until I share this little piece of poop with my husband who is a marine biologist ergo, a well educated scientist who is also a serious environmentalist. This will generate some talk at our kitchen table tonight.

Santorum is beginning to look like a pretzel made by a pretzel maker on his first day at work. He keeps twisting himself in every direction to try to escape what he said each day before. He has no true idea what science really is and that's very obvious. If he even for a second thinks that intelligent design and creationism have anything to do with actual science, he is pitifully ignorant.

I will give Santorum one thing, he sure as hell knows how to stay in the headlines even if it is as a result of his warped insanity.

It's sad to hear religious people regurgitate antiquated ideas because they wrapped themselves too tightly in ridiculous dogma. I've seen better men bend their knee to it's bondage. Santorum, being a politician and as such a caricature of the republican base, takes it to a whole new level - he is a superstar for the "head in the sand" troglodytes that are feeling fear and are threatened by change life. At least they are fighting against something tangible since "the only constant is change"....

So which party held the presidency when the missions to the moon were first proposed, and also when the first humans (Americans) landed on the moon? Neither JFK or LBJ were conservatives or republicans.

And who is more likely to reject the biological sciences, a liberal or a conservative? Evolution is no friend of the conservative, except when it comes to economics.

Also in the spirit of science is accepting when something is wrong, as I clearly was. I should have known that LBJ's stint as president finished in January of 1969, six months before Apollo 11.

When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field right up to its edge, neither shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest. And you shall not strip your vineyard bare, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am the Lord your God.

The Religious Right excels at ignoring whatever Bible passages (whether Old Testament or New) don't fit with their preferred agenda, dontcha know! They selectively cite Old Testament passages when it suits their purposes to do so -- usually when they're trying to explain their opposition to homosexuality -- while at the same time very conveniently ignoring other passages in the Old Testament about matters such ass diet and dress. All this serves to do is prove that they're every bit as self-serving and morally relativistic as the people whom they're criticizing.

Never trust anyone who insists that patriotism requires you to blindfold yourself with the flag.

mf76's picture

Absolutely. In fact the bible is MUCH more explicit when it comes to behavior around menstruating women than it is regarding homosexual sex.

Leviticus 15:19-30
And if a woman have an issue, and her issue in her flesh be blood, she shall be put apart seven days: and whosoever toucheth her shall be unclean until the even. And every thing that she lieth upon in her separation shall be unclean: every thing also that she sitteth upon shall be unclean. And whosoever toucheth her bed shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even. And whosoever toucheth any thing that she sat upon shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even. And if it be on her bed, or on any thing whereon she sitteth, when he toucheth it, he shall be unclean until the even. And if any man lie with her at all, and her flowers be upon him, he shall be unclean seven days; and all the bed whereon he lieth shall be unclean. And if a woman have an issue of her blood many days out of the time of her separation, or if it run beyond the time of her separation; all the days of the issue of her uncleanness shall be as the days of her separation: she shall be unclean. Every bed whereon she lieth all the days of her issue shall be unto her as the bed of her separation: and whatsoever she sitteth upon shall be unclean, as the uncleanness of her separation. And whosoever toucheth those things shall be unclean, and shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even. But if she be cleansed of her issue, then she shall number to herself seven days, and after that she shall be clean. And on the eighth day she shall take unto her two turtles, or two young pigeons, and bring them unto the priest, to the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. And the priest shall offer the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering; and the priest shall make an atonement for her before the LORD for the issue of her uncleanness.

...these asinine statements by R's and their candidates? I'm a grown man and I just want to cry nearly every time one of them opens their mouths.

How have we gotten to the point where such idiocy, inaccuracy, and utterly incorrect information and is presented and championed as the campaign platform of a major presidential candidate? How have these people become this ignorant?

I'm not just asking this rhetorically. I really want to know. After all the scientific advancements and discoveries of the 20th century, how is it possible that we have people questioning and distorting proven scientific facts in such unbelievable ways?

How has our educational system produced these people?

Authoritarian Personality Syndrome is what you are observing, and what is frustrating you and I.

The AP mind exhibits more fear of ambiguity, so it desperately tries to control everything. It is part genetic, and part educational. The more diverse experiences one has in ones childhood, and life, will diminish this, but only down to the point where ones brain wiring will let it. Combine an Authoritarian wired mind to a lack of experiences, and you get a Santorum, a Palin, an Idiot.

Google RWA-SDO embrace, and read up on the dangerous combination of Authoritarian leaders and folowers.

Check out the link below, and read up on a 30 year, empirical research project on AP, you'll find many answers, and can even chat with other researchers and laymen, on this subject.

not so much their god let it happen, but more correctly that they realise either they themselves are their god (in the sense of spinning their own reality and rejecting all else), or they realise that acknowledgement also requires responsibility. and we know how good these blokes are with responsibility (c.f. So the pro-creationist, anti-evolution, climate change deniers are the scientific ones. Regardless of where the evidence points, these cretins refuse to change their views.
These Christian dominionists and multi-national corporatists are like people who rents a house, trash it because they don't have to pay for the repairs, then move on when the place becomes inhabitable. They've done it with strip mining, the Love Canal, asbestos in Montana - everywhere they go, they leave a trail of destruction. Now they want to put the XL pipeline through the Ogallala Aquifer. They're willing to poison the water supply for America's Breadbasket so they can export dirty oil to the world from Texas and make a buck.

Bluestocking's picture

...just because we don't want to exploit the planet to its very utmost would almost be laughable if it weren't so scary. Changing the climate, ruining the soil, polluting the air, poisoning the fresh water without which life cannot survive on this planet, exterminating the species which the God Santorum believes in supposedly created...in any other setting, would this be considered "good stewardship"????? If Santorum owned a house and rented it out to someone only to come back months later and find motor oil stains on the carpet, dead grass on the lawn, and holes knocked in the plaster...would he consider that person to have been a good tenant? I very much doubt it. For that matter, once we've exploited this planet to the point that it can no longer sustain us...what then?? It's not as if we've managed to find a spare Earth, is it? And even if we did manage to find one, it would almost certainly take us a very long time to get there even with advanced technology.

Of course, all this is academic to someone like Santorum and the people who are inclined to vote for him, since many of them believe that we're living in the End Times already and that God will miraculously save all of the truly faithful (by which, of course, they mean themselves and anyone who agrees with them) from suffering...so it doesn't really matter what we do to the planet as far as they're concerned because they're convinced that they know what God is really thinking better than anyone else (including God himself, it would seem).

Never trust anyone who insists that patriotism requires you to blindfold yourself with the flag.

"Parachutes are allowed in checked or carry-on baggage, but may not be worn in flight."

---Southwest Airlines

Bluestocking's picture

Despite what far too many Christians appear to believe, forgiveness was never intended to be a "Get Out Of Jail Free Card" in Monopoly and cannot be used as such. Whenever a Christian asks God for forgiveness, it must be accompanied by a genuine acknowledgment of his or her transgression and a sincere sense of remorse combined with the intent to avoid repeating the transgression in the future. Without that, asking for forgiveness is for the most part pointless and meaningless because the person isn't ready to admit that they've done anything for which they might need to be forgiven and is simply going through the motions (primarily out of the desire to avoid punishment, which is essentially a self-serving motivation). Christianity accepts that many people will end up committing the same sins over and over again simply because sin is part of human nature...but they can still be forgiven as long as they admit their own weakness and genuinely regret their misdeeds. This ties in with the sentiments expressed in Corinthians 13:2..."If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing." It's not the act itself, but the motivation for the act, that is important.

(I might put in parenthetically that I was raised Christian, albeit in a very liberal Protestant denomination, but am now a self-described "devout agnostic.")

Never trust anyone who insists that patriotism requires you to blindfold yourself with the flag.

Human beings in general -- and United States citizens in particular -- may be sentient (and sometimes even that is debatable) but we're nowhere nearly as intelligent as we give ourselves credit for being. We may be infinitely more technologically advanced than our primitive ancestors (who people like Santorum don't believe in anyway)...but when it comes to social evolution and true civilization in the form of genuinely ethical behavior, we haven't even remotely made the same level of progress (and therein lies a large part of the problem).

I agree that as a man, Rick Santorum should be elevated above the Earth; preferably to an elevation of 13,000 feet...and thn allowed to show his scientific chops by personally testing the law of gravity.

Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.

LockeNessMonster's picture

Not "exploiting" those areas of science, huh, Rick?
You know, at the first of this thing I put Bachman and Gingrich at the top of my "seriously, Republicans?" list. I knew Santorum was a religious zealot, but I gave the guy credit (falsely) I guess for at least being somewhat intelligent. Geez. You can tell he's not used to speaking to the country. As Bugs Bunny used to say, "what a ma-roon."
Republicans behind the scenes are going crazy. If Romney loses Michigan (Santorum is falling with his latest rants - theology, Hitler, birth control, etc) and falters on Super Tuesday, it is going to get really, really, interesting. They know Santorum would probably lose the general election by high double-digits. Only the far right is in to his Bible rhetoric. And some not even as far as he takes it - Mississippi (MISSISSIPPI!) voted down that "personhood" bill where the religious right though it would be the first state to approve such a law.
But I'm with Larence O'Donnell on this one - it would be great to see Santorum and Obama debate, and just see how far "center right conservative" the American people really are.

I've seen some stuff, man. And some thangs...

opus132's picture

No, Rick. You were not criticized for attacking Obama's "Ideology". You didn't use that word. You were criticized for attacking his "theology". You referred to a "phony theology"; those were your exact words. You presumed to know the only truth about the nature of your imaginary friend up there. When people claim a pipeline to that particular truth, we get Crusades, pogroms, Hundred Years War, unimaginable bloodletting between Shia and Sunni, Hindu and Moslem, etc etc etc. What you said was utterly appalling, even for you. The attacks on you were actually a bit inappropriately mild.

Jscottfur's picture

...theology, toxology, trilogy, it doesn't matter. All you have to say to a wingnut is something ending with ology or ism, and their eyes glaze over while their sphincters snap shut from fear. Then you wave the flag and yell USA, USA, and you've won another GOP voter.

Guys like Santorum mix politics, religion and business into an unholy toxic stew. What could possibly go wrong?

I refuse to believe anyone could suffer from this complete lack of self awareness, this guy has to be trolling. Period.

That part is true. Stewardship, however, implies service to rather than ownership of.

The part that's harder to swallow is his 'we are good stewards and we have a responsibility to be good stewards. Because unlike the Earth, we're intelligent and we can actually manage things.'

How anyone could say that with a straight face after Katrina and the BP oil spill and Bhopal and Chernobyl and Exxon Valdez and Love Canal and the Pacific Gyre Garbage Patch and the Mississippi Delta Dead Zone and the Rainbow Herbcides in Viet Nam and the Oklahoma Dust Bowl and the destruction of the Amazon rainforest to make way for cattle, and speaking of cattle, the 50 million metric tons of methane per year from cow farts so that MacDonald's can serve up Happy Meals...

...if I were God, I'd fire us. We are BAD stewards, we've had the equivalent of a frat party in His house - we've raided His fridge, drank all His booze, pooped on His carpets, destroyed His furniture, kicked His dog and burnt holes in His roof. If there were a God, He should have kicked us out a long time ago for being the worst stewards of this planet imaginable.

Santorum is an idiot.

Apparently this worthless filthy nasty pile of frothy mix doesn't even understand the difference between the words management and exploitation. Which isn't the least bit surprising when I think about since I've never heard of a right wing radical that doesn't have a language comprehension problem.

And on the eighth day, God created stupid people and called them republicans; for they would succumb to the whims and lies of their oppressors, and fight to the death for the malevolence those same oppressors exacted upon them.

But then God became ashamed and embarrassed at what he had done on the eighth day, and removed it from the record.

Unfortunately, some of the republican's escaped before God could round them all up, and they became fruit-full and multiplied, calling themselves his "chosen People," - and God wept.

If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.

He should be confined for his own and society's protection.

He's as corrupt and amoral as any other GOPer, but thinks he can apply a veneer of ersatz virtue over his corruption and corrupt inclinations by trying to convince himself and his supporters that he is still a good person. I'm betting that Jesus want nothing to do with him. Nothing at all.

One other thing: The Earth isn't ours; it was only lent to us by those who won't even be born for another thousand years or more. How much more amoral and godless can one be than to exploit to exhaustion resources that those in the future will need to survive, to do it out of mere bottomless greed that is absent any real need and to do it to our own future children? Yeah, Frothy, that's real man-of -aith stuff, there, you're advocating.

...that's the only explanation for this:

Santorum added that there was "obviously a role for government to play" in environmental regulation, but it was best left to state and local government.

So if some huge pollution spewing factory is built on the border of Tennessee and Kentucky starts poisoning everybody in Louisville, then the Louisville city council can just vote to stop the pollution at the border. Right? Is that how state and local control would work>

"the conducting, supervising, or managing of something; especially : the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one's care."

Please tell me how the environmental movement does not perfectly fill that definition.

Santorum is a Christianist and he really means "Dominion" over the Earth. Dominion can be defined as:

"the state that exists when one person or group has power over another."

Dominion is what moves Santorum, not Stewardship. Stewardship just sounds better to his audience.

These people are even ignorant of their own religion! It says in Genesis that God made man from the earth(clay). So is he saying our dead earth created live people?
As I look around I notice nothing alive grows in something dead, unless its bacteria or fungi or something. How can all that life on earth we see around us all the time spring from something dead? Rickster, the earth is as alive and vibrant as any human you know. As a matter of fact it will go on living long after you are gone.
Of course it's easier to abuse it if you just consider it as dumb ol rock.
Rick, in addition to the earth your God gave us wind and sun and tides. Why don't we use those gifts of God instead of drilling and cutting and raping the planet? Would you shit in your own nest Rick? Apparently you see no problem with that.

They are so far over the edge this year that they can't see it. They've gone over the edge and cracked their head on the rocks below. The have become so obtuse that its hard to read or listen to what they say and even believe they exist on the same planet.
Even if they get their narrow-mindedness down to the width of a hair I am now convinced that they will find a way to make what little is left even smaller.
They have made themselves irrelevant to anyone even slightly aware of the world around them. They are going to conservative themselves out of the election.
