Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum on Sunday compared his war against reproductive rights and gay rights to the Civil Rights Movement, and attacked Newt Gingrich for putting social issues "in the back of the bus."

"In terms of social issues [Gingrich] has been married three times, he has two divorces, he's admitted to infidelity," ABC's Christiane Amanpour noted during an interview with Santorum. "Should voters hold that against him?"

"I think character is definitely an issue," Santorum opined. "I've been married 21 years, I have seven children. That's a factor that people are going to look at and should look at when it comes to the person you are going to have lead the country."

"Is he a real conservative with the social values?" Amanpour asked.

"I think that Newt has consistently put those, let's say, in the back of the bus," Santorum replied. "He's never really been an advocate of pushing those issues."

Earlier this year, Santorum also likened the the fight against abortion rights to African Americans' struggle for equality. The former Pennsylvania senator pointed to President Barack Obama's stand on the subject.

"I find it almost remarkable for a black man to say, 'We're going to decide who are people and who are not people,'" the candidate told the Christian News Service.

"For decades certain human beings were wrongly treated as property and denied liberty in America because they were not considered persons under the constitution," Santorum wrote in a message to supporters several days later. "Today other human beings, the unborn of all races, are also wrongly treated as property and denied the right to life for the same reason; because they are not considered persons under the Constitution."

Ok, this is getting a bit ridiculous. I cannot find any contact information for CnLs on the site and your own profile is set to not accept any PMs. I didn't want to run around other topics embarrassing you but you've rather embarrassed yourself with your story of December 1st about BBC presenter Jeremy Clarkson. Please read the comments there and correct your mistake.

As for this story - Santorum's simply desperate because no one is paying him the least bit of attention anymore. Maybe he wants his name out there so people will Google him...

For the site.
His contact/ private messages works for me. It must be on your end.

JohnMWhite's picture

Obviously you can PM anyone on the site as necessary. That's how it is on most sites. It is not 'on my end'.

Thanks for the contact links. Why is this link nowhere to be found on the main site? The only tabs I see are Home and Help unless I follow your link directly.

Moderator's picture

Even when I'm not logged in as a moderator. The contact info has always been up there.

JohnMWhite's picture

You can't click on the names of the posters if you aren't logged in.

The contact info is not there in Opera but I checked another browser and saw it. I guess it's a coding issue. You guys might want to check that, though checking your sources and the context of your clips might be a higher priority.

Now if only knowing meant doing something about it rather than leaving a terse, passive-aggressive comment.

I'm only trying to help you guys, remember. The last thing we need is for places like this to become distrusted and then when you have video of police abuses against protesters or something important like that, you can easily be dismissed as liars who take things out of context.

I think Santorum may be very sincere about what he believes but that doesn't give him a pass on some of his weirdness or make his beliefs right for everyone.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

Kreskin's picture

Maybe he is , it's possible , but the Howdy Doodie look a like is definitely a Republicon and that totally negates any good qualities that he claims to have .

media critic's picture

He's a Baptist who became Catholic. You can argue he is more conservative as a Catholic, but to the Iowa Protestants he'll get twisted into a dark traitor, just slightly better than one of those weird Mormons. I don't think he will be president, especially with his corrupt history. Santorum's opinion is like a mouse squeaking in an empty room, few people will hear him. Obama must be smiling with these two sad clowns as the final choices, most cons will stay home on voting day. Not an endorsement though, I want a Progressive president, but the corporate system is set in stone sadly and unfairly.

Kreskin's picture

"I want a Progressive president, but the corporate owned system is set in stone " I agree , you're right , and there is little the President ( alone ) can do about it ... even if he wanted to . It's going to take a lot more than a bunch of relatively small occupations and demonstrations to force change .As long as half or more of the electorate remain ignorant stooges I just can't see how it's going to get any better , more likely that things are only going to get worse .

Sucking up all those tax credits. Sorry, in my book, a family that's got seven kids in this day in age is just f'ing irresponsible-- poor or rich.

A lot of them do , you see the more kids you have the more blessed you are ... or will be . I have em in my tribe , you can pretty much count the number of years they've been married by the number of kids they have .

"Whatever your particular problem is, I promise you, the Republicans are not the least bit interested in solving it. They are interested in two things, and two things only: making you afraid of it, and telling you who's to blame for it."

Pgathome's picture

while I do not agree with Santorum, I think through randomness he is correct. I applaud his consistency. as far as the TeaParty and the rIght encouraging Gingrich I d not believe them. the idea that they think the biggest problem is Wash. Dc and then they indorced the ultimate insider tells me expediency is all they care about.

I hope his SEVEN children have more sense,

If he frames this as a civil rights issue he makes a fool of himself. He is opposed to civil rights for the majority of the population, and always has been.

"He's never really been an advocate of pushing those issues." , LMAO , Ginrich is hardly in any position to be .

that if the state has the power to stop abortion it also has the power to sterilize people. The state gains the power to control reproduction which means it can get rid of birth control. The state can also force women to get pregnant. If you don't believe me then just google for Eugenics and force sterilizations. .

and logic do not compute in Ricky's pea-brain.

He may be a hard-ass on the 'social' issues, but what does he have to offer regarding foreign relations, or the environment, or the economy?? Nothing.

If Ricky wants to argue about 'personhood'...perhaps he should spend some time thinking about:
in what month of gestation does a Corporation become a Person?? Right after "Incorporation'? Or, not until the IPO??

and when does the parasite have more rights than its host? That the word parasite has a negative connotation is unfortunate

So no, not a parasite.

Now, once it becomes a teenager, I think the real parasitism begins...

'We're going to decide who are people and who are not people,'" but it's okay for him to do so. Please let him fade back into obscurity. So you lose your Senate seat in a landslide and you think it's a smart thing to run for President ? Not the brightest bulb.

Terypat's picture

I know this is trivial, but I'm curious as to how Ricky supports his large family while applying for the job of president. Is he paid for TV appearances? DOES he have a real day job? Where does his money come from?

Pgathome's picture

While I am moot a fan of Santorum Ed got this right, probably a random event. I CONGRADULATE HIM FOR HIS CONSISTENCY.nn
