President-elect Obama holds first press conference: Economy
By David Friday Nov 07, 2008 3:35pm
UPDATED: John Amato: For his first presser, Obama effortlessly slid into the position of President-elect and owns the spot light as he focused on the economic crisis we all face in his first press conference since being elected president.
Obama looks like a man confident that he can help turn around the horrible state of affairs we face as a nation after eight years of George Bush and Conservative rule that has practically bankrupted the nation.
Obama: First of all, we need a rescue plan for the middle class that invests in immediate efforts to create jobs and provide relief to families that are watching their paychecks shrink and their life savings disappear.
A particularly urgent priority is a further extension of unemployment insurance benefits for workers who cannot find work in the increasingly weak economy.
Some of the choices that we make are going to be difficult. And I have said before and I will repeat again: It is not going to be quick, and it is not going to be easy for us to dig ourselves out of the hole that we are in.
But America is a strong and resilient country. And I know we will succeed, if we put aside partisanship and politics and work together as one nation. That's what I intend to do.
OBAMA: Thank you very much, everybody. Thank you very much.
This morning, we woke up to more sobering news about the state of our economy. The 240,000 jobs lost in October marks the 10th consecutive month that our economy has shed jobs. In total, we've lost nearly 1.2 million jobs this year, and more than 10 million Americans are now unemployed.
Tens of millions of families are struggling to figure out how to pay the bills and stay in their homes. Their stories are an urgent reminder that we are facing the greatest economic challenge of our lifetime, and we're going to have to act swiftly to resolve it.
Now, the United States has only one government and one president at a time. And until January 20th of next year, that government is the current administration.
I've spoken to President Bush. I appreciate his commitment to ensuring that his economic policy team keeps us fully informed as developments unfold. And I'm also thankful for his invitation to the White House.
Immediately after I become president, I'm going to confront this economic crisis head-on by taking all necessary steps to ease the credit crisis, help hardworking families and restore growth and prosperity.
And this morning, I met with members of my Transition Economic Advisory Board, who are standing behind me, alongside my vice president-elect, Joe Biden.
They will help to guide the work of my transition team, working with Rahm Emanuel, my chief of staff, in developing a strong
...set of policies to respond to this crisis. We discussed in the earlier meeting several of the most immediate challenges facing our economy and key priorities on which to focus on in the days and weeks ahead.
First of all, we need a rescue plan for the middle class that invests in immediate efforts to create jobs and provide relief to families that are watching their paychecks shrink and their life savings disappear.
A particularly urgent priority is a further extension of unemployment insurance benefits for workers who cannot find work in the increasingly weak economy.
A fiscal stimulus plan that will jump-start economic growth is long overdue. I've talked about it throughout this -- the last few months of the campaign. We should get it done.
Second, we have to address the spreading impact of the financial crisis on the other sectors of our economy: small businesses that are struggling to meet their payrolls and finance their holiday inventories; and state and municipal governments facing devastating budget cuts and tax increases.
We must also remember that the financial crisis is increasingly global and requires a global response.
The news coming out of the auto industry this week reminds us of the hardship it faces, hardship that goes far beyond individual auto companies to the countless suppliers, small businesses and communities throughout our nation who depend on a vibrant American auto industry.
The auto industry is the backbone of American manufacturing and a critical part of our attempt to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.
I would like to see the administration do everything it can to accelerate the retooling assistance that Congress has already enacted.
In addition, I have made it a high priority for my transition team to work on additional policy options to help the auto industry adjust, weather the financial crisis, and succeed in producing fuel-efficient cars here in the United States of America.
And I was glad to be joined today by (Michigan) Gov. Jennifer Granholm, who obviously has great knowledge and great interest on this issue.
I've asked my team to explore what we can do under current law and whether additional legislation will be needed for this purpose.
Third, we will review the implementation of this administration's financial program to ensure that the government's efforts are achieving their central goal of stabilizing financial markets while protecting taxpayers, helping homeowners, and not unduly rewarding the management of financial firms that are receiving government assistance.
It is absolutely critical that the Treasury work closely with the FDIC, HUD, and other government agencies to use the substantial authority that they already have to help families avoid foreclosure and stay in their homes.
Finally, as we monitor and address these immediate economic challenges, we will be moving forward in laying out a set of policies that will grow our middle class and strengthen our economy in the long term.
We cannot afford to wait on moving forward on the key priorities that I identified during the campaign, including clean energy, health care, education, and tax relief for middle-class families.
My transition team will be working on each of these priorities in the weeks ahead, and I intend to reconvene this advisory board to discuss the best ideas for responding to these immediate problems.
Let me close by saying this. I do not underestimate the enormity of the task that lies ahead. We have taken some major action to date, and we will need further action during this transition and subsequent months.
With that, let me open it up for some questions. And I'm going to start right here with you.
Obama also answers questions from reporters here....

Brilliant, even.
I trust he'll continue as he has begun. Press conferences like this allow him to keep the American people informed, appear gracious (no hint of usurping the current administration's power or responsibility for the current mess) remind everyone that the economic collapse is not happening on his watch, begin introducing his team and advise of the focus of the strategies he is developing.
Graciousness and the appearance of bipartisanship costs so little and may hinder the current administration's desire/ability to act unilaterally without having the GOP pay further political cost.
Obama's actually got a fair amount of power. If the GOP is seen as thwarting him during the transition, then they'll fall deeper into the pit and Obama will look that much better when things finally turn around.
As a boomer, I recall oh so fondly rushing home from high school to catch JFK's live afternoon press conferences. The mixture of leadership, maturity, empathy, humor, perspective, and coolness were what truly distinguished Kennedy from every president before and since -- until now. Clearly a bit nervous and stiff for the first couple questions, the President-Elect relaxed into his best suited role. He was at last able to leave the campaign mode box that stifled his personality. He's much better at governing than campaigning, as America will soon see. We've all waited so, so long for him to come along, and we are proud that only our country is capable of producing him.
... isn't it refreshing to have a leader and a statesman at the lectern who can actually marshal cogent thoughts and articulate them in complete declarative sentences?
I think George Bush should date Sarah Palin. Two illiterates sitting in a tree ...
(n/t)
And using real words.
OMG BigIslandDave, the thought of their offspring.
Future "guests" of the Jerry Springer show.
I hope that scenario doesn't involve any progeny, for the child's—and gene pool's—sake.
Clinton avoided press conferences, didn't vet appointees, let Hillary veto non-women, delayed every decision to the last minute and was late to everything, blew away our Democratic majority, and was as unfaithful as a Republican. Obama has banned drama queens from his staff.
In defense of Clinton (Bill), he had no Washington experience, and right-wing radio ate him up alive before he even arrived. Fortunately, Dems were wised up this time and didn't nominate another backwoods southerner like Carter or Bill Clinton, or a mediocre politician like Gore, Hillary, Dukakis, Mondale, Humphrey, Bobby Kennedy, or Kerry.
The Press reporters will have to start using parts of their brain that have been dead for the last 8 years.
The most important part of the presser was the dog problem. It looks like there is heavy pressure to get a death row dog. I sure hope so.
I've had dogs all my life but never a 'pure-bred'...my kennel now consists of a collie/goldie cross, a boxer/pit cross, and a lab/hound cross....great, great dogs, all of 'em...
My father always refered to our families as Heinz 57. He also thought thourhabreds (sp?) were stupid, and trained to do one thing only.
We're decendents of a specific Scottish baron and various other lairds, French Barons, and German Counts, the English Plantagenets, as well Welsh tin miners and Cherokee Indians. I think we also have some Romanian ancestry, but of course all this is also by marriage and not just blood-lines.
I would never have the patience to run for office. I'd rather be appointed by another King George III, as one ancestor was. Of course the one appointed as an archbishop by King Charles I eventually lost his position, but I can be no more specific without tipping my hand as to what my actual surname is.
When was the last time you really wanted to watch a press conference?
cut her break short to watch it today.
"I have to go clean a room...and turn on the tv in there so I can see what Obama has to say."
Couldn't give her any guff over that.
With the news of the day centering around Obama's press conference and all Mika can find to talk about (she is on Road to the WH) is Sarah Palin and how horribly she is being treated! Please MSNBC get rid of Mika now! And send Joe with her. Of course Pat Buchanan is on too and he is defending Palin. The others, Lawrence ODonnell and Richard Wolfe, are trying to set Mika straight. Now she is interrupting Lawrence because he doesn't agree with Mika. Mika seems to think Palin was not vetted and it is McCain's fault that Palin did so poorly. No it was Palin's fault, ANYONE WITH A BRAIN WOULD REALIZE IF
THEY ARE NOT READY TO BE VP AND WOULD HAVE TURNED DOWN THE JOB.
OMG, please shut Mika & Pat B up. They are over the edge and they both have been in the tank for Palin from the day she hit the campaign trail. Pat is now being pathetic. Love is such a drag for an "old" man!
It's just a matter of time before these cable right wingers go the way of Tucker Carlson as their ratings go down the toilet.
ohyeh.
does he still have a job?
County lock-up?
Pat Buchanan has become irrelevant - in a word. His continuous lying through his teeth has now cost him his national reputation. He's a total buffoon.
Also, I couldn't agree more that we need to begin a petition to MSNBC to rid themselves of Joe Scarborough and Mika. Mika is a disgraceful "female tool" - nothing more than an airhead with make-up on.
What I am hearing on the street is that these naysayers who are critical of Obama before he is even president will suffer the loss of their careers. The people have rejected this smut and smear - and will reject these sickos in our faces.
I only watch Matthews, Olberman and Maddow on MSNBC at this point. The rest are sick, nasty sycophantic media whores and the people need to push them into total irrelevancy.
Well, let's be honest; MSNBC is fast becoming sort of the Fox News of the left. They're overall certainly as partisan and at least Keith is becoming just as name-calling. However, they do have the advantage of actually being RIGHT far more often than Fox, and have a far greater knack for logic and the marshalling of actual facts. They're cheerleaders, not analysts. (Though Matthews still challenges both sides) But I admit, they're cheering for my side, so it's been a pleasure to celebrate this victory with them.
1).I see Fox's progressive equivalent of Joe Scarborough's daily program
AND
2). I see MSNBC allow someone go on and on repeating the same stupid falsehoods (like BillO's "The American massacre of Nazi soldiers at Malmedy") without issuing an on-air retraction.
You don't understand what Mika's position on Palin. She's afraid that all these anonymous attacks on Palin will generate justifiable sympathy for her. They are even more sexist than any leveled at Hillary. Remember that Mika's was previously attacked repeated by Scarborough for being in the tank for Obama. Also, check out YouTube for Mika's attempt to burn and shred her morning producer's "news" copy lead story about Paris Hilton. Mika is far too classy, charismatic and professional not to have her own show -- we only watch in the morning or at 6PM when she's at the helm. What a talent!
P.S.: Hire Stephanie Miller and gang at MSNBC (or CNN) to replace their lame morning anchor lead, too. Viewers would be grateful (except for the f*rt jokes, I suppose).
This is the first time in 8 years that we've had a leader who is intelligent, articulate, informed, and eager to work with the people. Bush governed in cloak and dagger style, lying in our faces, and making a jackass of himself in public. He became a national disgrace and international embarrassment.
We now have a leader of whom we can be proud - the confidence level in this country has risen overwhelmingly as we watch this man's brilliant mind - thinking on his feet as reporters ask questions - and no longer being on the edge of our seats in embarrassment of what he might say.
This man is solid and steady, wise, and amazingly intelligent. I'm just grateful that he's willing to lead us in this time of great need.
Obama is balm for my soul at this tenuous point in american history.
From the fundraising email sent out by cult leader James Dobson's Focus on the Family, you'd think President Elect Obama's number one, two and three priorities lie in killing the unborn and having gays take over everything to do with the government.
It is absolutely shocking to me to think Obama would spend time at his first press conference talking about something as mundane as the economy and a puppy.
You're correct. It is simply shocking to me as well. Shocking!!
...we're gonna have a president who can
and WILL.
we're gonna have a president who can ACTUALLY TALK..!! WHOOOPEEEEEE!! 'BOUT damn time..
We've witnessed firsthand the power of Obama supporters nationwide and what our voices mean - now it's time to put those voices to good use and threaten to boycott stations which carry this smut and propagandic "hit jobs" on Obama even before he becomes president. This is deplorable and must be stopped.
If we boycott these programs, they will eventually be off the air. Send letters to NBC to let them know your thoughts about MSNBC Joe Scarborough and Mika and boycott their show.
The difference is remarkable - being able to sit there and listen to someone who has thought things through and is willing to convey his plans in a systematic format for everyone to understand. Wow! I can't remember when I felt this interested to view a president's press conference in my entire life.
It goes without saying that his finesse in handling reporters queries was a stroke of genius and eloquence. This man has a brain and can think quickly and with wisdom on his feet.
No more embarrassment when we are led by President Obama!
on the right to Sodahead (don't), you'll find an atrociously-phrased, loaded question about tax on wealth/income, to which I responded :
But refrained from publishing when they wanted me to sign up or some crap.
We have a president who can talk and even make sense. What a breeze of fresh air. We have a president who speaks to the people with a clear message and doesn't just tell us what we want to hear. This could be the start of something great.
I was telling my friend the other day that if Obama can just be forthright with the American public during the duration of his Presidency, then he will do well. I also hope that Obama keeps using New Media to keep people informed. I want to hear from a President Obama once a week telling me what is going on in the two wars and in the economic crisis. I really want him to do some internet "Fireside Chats."
I bet he will
I've been waiting for Obama's press conferences as President-Elec and President. He can do what Bush cannot, give words a sense of meaningfulness.
Who else will be happy that circular logic as was highly espoused by Bush and McClellan will be non-existent in an Obama administration? Remember the whole we will leave Iraq when we are successful, and we will know we are successful when we are able to leave Iraq?
He won't be able to run "Great Moments In Presidential Speeches" anymore for laughs, we're actually going to have someone at the helm who is articulate.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4kKpBwE1Y8
imagine, we now have an articulate person who can speak for us, represent us to the world. it's nice when a president does not look like a bumpkin or buffoon any more.
Oh, yeah, it looks good on him, doesn;t it?
Coherant thoughts. Intellect. Multiple syllable words. I am so looking forward to four years of this. R.I.P. neoconism. I'm just sorry so many in this country had to learn the hard way what a failure some of us could predict it would be from the beginning.
Bout time
They still want to ask questions that are negative.
That is their job. That is what they should have done in the run up to the Iraq war. That is what they should always do.
Obama is not going to get a pass just because the last guy did.
I thought he did okay today -- it was a promising start. He's going to get a lot better; there seems to be a lot of room for improvement.
Sorry to say he's no Bill Clinton when it comes to speaking off the top of his head. But he'll get better with practice.
The 1st question one of the reporters asked was about the taxes for the rich. It was a stupid question.
Sorry, I didn't realize that "negative" and "stupid" were synonyms.
...it's the times we live in. we are in a national and international crisis (I would maintain that we were in crisis long before Obama announced his candidacy)
did you hear him Tuesday night in Grant Park?
and, fer chrissake, he's not president yet, has a long way to go in terms of his being brought up to speed in terms of his briefings.
The exciting thing to me is that there can be no doubt that this man is where the buck is going to stop. No Clintonesque "mistakes were made" for this guy. You can take that to the bank. This man is going to be president, let there be no doubt in anybody's mind.
Of course I heard him Tuesday night! But that was a prepared speech, not a spontaneous response to someone else's question. And it was largely summing up his campaign.
I agree with you about the briefings, and how that will probably help. And that was a class move to call Nancy Reagan. It's a different world when the president can actually admit to a mistake.
There are very positive things about Obama not being like Bill Clinton, don't get me wrong! The capacity to educate while he communicates is something he clearly needs to work on, however.
They were semi-tough and probing.
That's what reporters--real ones, not pundit-wannabes and shite-house shills--are supposed to do.
No, really. It's true. And Pols are supposed to answer them straight-forwardly.
Yeah, really.
It's been so long since we heard that, it's gonna sound strange for a while...
I HOPE THE TAKE AWAY THEIR PRESS PASSES! WHOEEE!
Apparently the MSM's intelligence somehow self-adjusts to match the intelligence of who they cover. Check out a Bush presser vs an Obama presser. All the people who seemed like brain-dead hacks asking stupid timid questions of Bush, looked rapt and attentive, listening to Obama's answers and asking probing questions.
I don't think they are intentionally biased, I just think there is something about the journalistic ethos or mindset or whatever that makes journalists deal with people on the level they perceive those people to be at.
providing the interview. Doing so, like doing so to your boss, is not likely to endear.
is idiots don't get called to task and smart people get hammered.
I'm already getting hammered tonight.
the press corps learned early on that there was no point in asking George any question. Not only could he not answer any meaningful questions, but he didn't give a shit and nothing was going to make him give a shit. That's why Cheney had to go with him to testify before the 911 commission.
It's just nice to hear someone who can talk.
What the fuck was Tony Villar doing there with Real Economic advisors ?
I guess that's his consolation prize, since he's not getting any other position in this administration...
In Feb., 20089 the sales tax in L.A. will be 10.25 per cent...
Thanks, Frendo...
I was watching clips of the press conference on the Leher Newshour, and he seemed to remember every part of multiple part questions, and would remember there was another part that he might ask the reporter to repeat.
However, I hope he loses the habit of hemming and hawing like a mule sewing circle...ummm...hmmm....etc...
LOL... his hesitation sounds can be distracting but you know, smart people needs time to think too. LOL. At least after the ahhh ummmm something intelligent comes after them and you know what he's gonna say has passed thru his brain, unlike Bush who just spit shit out between all the air bubbles in his entire head.
off work today to go home and watch this press conference. I just have to thank you all for electing a person that we, in the English speaking world, can understand. Thank you ever so much.
I thank us for electing somebody for whom we dont have to cringe every time he gets in front of a microphone or meets another head of state. What a nightmare it's been.
I'm listening to a classical music station whilst I type. It broadcasts from Fair Park in Dallas, and they must be happy with the election results. They just played a very classical version of America the Beautiful, followed by a blues version of the same song by Ray Charles.
the dude sounds like he knows how to be president. wtf??? for a second I didn't recognize it, it's been so long.
Here is this same coverage from MSNBC with slightly better video quality - and this clip includes interviews.
http://blogs.suntimes.com/sweet/2008/11/presi...
It's such a joy after eight years of miscues, mispronunciations and malaprops, to finally have a president who can intelligently speak about his policies and where he wants to take the nation.
OK, I know crooksandliars needs to pay the bills, but when I pulled up this video of obama talking about the economy, there to the right is an ad from "SodaHead.com" which has a smiling picture of obama, a $100 bill with a horizontal red line through Benjamin's face, and the text "Ready to Kiss your Paycheck Goodbye?"
Surely you can vet this ridiculous republican sounding ad out. I mean, < $250,000 gets a tax cut. And even rich people never have to "Kiss their Check goodbye". Even in FDR's time when the millionaires were paying 90% taxes, that still left them with over a $100,000 "paycheck".
Please get rid of this bull it pisses me off.
Gee, I do hope they have a mobile teleprompter to follow Mr. Barack Hussein Obama around everywhere he goes because Lord (or is it allah?) knows that he can't put a few words together without the aid of his speechwriters. Good thing he has his friends Tony Rezko (ooopps- in jail), Rev. Wright (God Damn America!) and Bill (I hate America!) Ayers to help him out.
Gee, I'm feeling so great that half the country elected this socialist!@
Thanks, liberals.
If it's so terrible, then why is Antonio Villarigosa standing up there?
Ok, they drive me crazy too. But MSNBC needs someone to expound the conservative point of view, or they would limit their audience the same way Fox has. And regardless of who is advocating for the right, it's going to sound like nonsense to any thinking person (i.e., progressives). Actually I kinda like Pat -- sometimes his "logic" almost makes sense. I sometimes feel that a debate with him wouldn't be a total waste of time.
For anyone wantings to "dispel" all the rumors surronding
Pres.Elect Obama, this is A MUST READ: Go to: www.discoverthenetwork.org
I hated the weasel words in response to the raising taxes on the Royalty question.
As good as he (or any other statesman (or politician (ick)) is, s?he needs to be held to the very highest standards.
I loved the mutt comment.
Poodles are hypo, and the standard ones (unfortunately rarely seen) are not at all like their miniaturized brethren.
Given his nature, he should get a goldie. Indira Ghandi had a few goldies.
Unfortunately, they are hyper-allogenic.
But a golden-doodle would be nice.
Barack should be checked for mind control devices after leaving Bush's presence. And he should avail himself of Bush's greatest skill and have a beer with him.
Barack Obama: Bush's legacy to the world.
