Gen. David Petraeus has served with gays and lesbians and believes troops may not care if the military's discriminatory Don't ask, don't tell policy is repealed.

"Do you think soldiers on the ground in the field care one way or the other if their comrade in arms are gay or lesbian?" asked NBC's David Gregory.

"I'm not sure that they do. We'll see," replied Petraeus.

"I know, I served, in fact, in combat with individuals who were gay and who were lesbian in combat situations. Frankly, you know, over time you said, hey, how's this guy shooting or how is her analysis or what have you?" explained Petraeus.

The general supports Secretary Gates' plan to review the law. "There is a process at work here now, David. I think that it is a very sound and good process," he said.

military are the children! The republicans! republicans don't care what the reasons are for or against. They are children and are not capable of making sound rational decisions. They should not be in government because they are children. They should not vote because they are children! I am not sure what happened to these people? It appears they had the same chance as the rest of us. Maybe there is something wrong in their DNA. A strange mutation that keeps them perpetual children? What ever the cause we have to do something to prevent future generations from becoming like minded morons like todays republicans.
republicanism/conservatisn is a mental illness and it has almost killed America!

It is the same rightwing media that has been feeding the gullible all the rightwing bullshit and lies that could be peddled.

what is there to review? All available evidence says the law is counter-productive and, for lack of nicer way, completely stupid.

Do we really need some lengthy "review" to determine what we already freakin' know? Really?!?

The lack of efficiency in this stupid country never ceases to amaze me.

mr teaspoon's picture

If the repeal of DADT is just issued by some executive order every opponent is going to argue that the troops and military were against it, Obama shoved it down their throats, blah blah blah.

Liberalicious's picture

Too effing bad.

Murray Rizberg's picture

Why are you so worried about what the right will say? They're gonna throw a hissy fit no matter how long the review is anyway!

I'm tired of liberals who worry about how conservatives will react to anything we do and how we do it. The only thing that should concern us is just getting something done for heaven's sake. That is IT.

bigironal's picture

I don't get it either! Just like the way they're approaching health care/w the public option! Some senators are already wringing their hands and sure as shootin' the dems will cave to the rabid right before the week is out! I hope I'm wrong but so far I've been batting 1000 on the spineless dems ability to cave in on ANYTHING and I've already let my 2 pukes Carl Levin & Debbi Stabanow know that no matter how the hcr bill goes they both loose my vote in the future because they ,along with the other 58 pukes who call themselves democrats, are now and always will be considered gutless, spineless sissy's!

The review isn’t for “should it be done?” but more “how would it be implemented?” Going from closeted to uncloseted will have issues. How do you deal with roommates when one is openly gay? Do you need to create some sort of separate bathrooms? Do you allow same sex marriage benefits? If I recall correctly, military sexual harassment rules don’t mention gender, so no changes there. Etc. Better to take some time and try to work out the issues in advance.

The exact same questions were asked when Truman integrated the Armed forces in the 1950's.

Anyone who supports DADT can kiss my black ass.

MaryK's picture

Truman made it happen over the objections of many in the general staff. But it had been promised for generations.

. . . that "were lesbian in combat situations"?

Sounds uncomfortable to say the least.

are you asking if they were "straight" in non-combat situations?

That was my thought. The enemy starts firing, and suddenly they stop and grab their iPod, "I know I have some Indigo Girls or Melissa Etheridge in here *somewhere*!"

Yes, I can actually see how that would hurt morale and combat readiness....

Oh, no! I'm turning (R)!!! :-P

Petraeus is waiting for his presidential exploratory commission to give him a position on the issue.

Petraeus 2012! While the media gushes over Palin, Pawlenty and Romney Petraeus will be the GOP's nominee. They will push "The Petraeus Doctrine" for any success Obama has in Iraq or Afganistan. The MSM wont dare question the war Jesus.

of course, none of them that have actually served their country..
I never did, but I have asked every single person I know that HAS served in the military (and it's a significant number, living and working in San Diego) and the most common answer is that they just don't give a shit. They all knew people that were gay or lesbian in the service, and no one cares.
It's just part of being within a large group of people anywhere.

sixandseveneights's picture

if they would go or allow their kid to go tin the place of the gay thrown out......crickets...

"the most common answer is that they just don't give a shit. "

I know a former Navy Seal and he said the same thing. If the Soldier didn't hit on him and did his job "who gave a fuck" was his answer.

Peter G's picture

if they care.

Hasa Diga Eebowai

The soldiers do not care, David Gregory. They do what they are told to do and only care if the the person next to them has their back. Why didn't David Gregory ask why it took so long for the military to figure this out.

Thats what is so amusing about this. On the one hand we are supposed to have the finest most disciplined military in the world and on the other and we apparently cannot or will not follow orders regarding gays in the military. So why does the right look down on us in the miltiary so much?

jakes's picture

Wait til this finally (inevitably) comes to pass and the ever eager fox news proves their non-existent point and jumps on all the armed service malcontents piling on - even though the the vast majority may be almost unaware.

gfm975's picture

Did the sockpuppet named David Gregory ask the pretentious General just how many soldiers he's personally asked if they care if the ban is lifted, or not? I didn't think so...

Sorry, but both Gregory and Petraeus are incompetent jerks.

DavidinChelseaMA's picture

What a jerk David Gregory is. To even suggest for a minute that because we are in the middle of two wars, we should ignore the civil rights of our brave gay service members, is sickening.

Fish's picture

It's that simple.

Republicans are liars and simply cannot be trusted.

bigironal's picture

When I was in the army from 1966-1968 we had 2 gays in our artillery battery, a staff sergeant and a SP/4 and NOBODY gave a dead rat's ass one way or the other!

RickinSF's picture

Recruiters are figuring out that highly-qualified gays are also graduating highschool with no prospects. Or they're losing jobs and livelihoods just like straight folks. A big reservoir of untapped talent is going to waste.

snookie's picture

When I entered the Marine Corps in 1977 there was plenty of homophobia. I never really cared one way or the other but kept my opinion to myself for the most part. Most young troops these days just don't care at all. Certainly not the ground pounders who live and breathe combat all day long. They have much more important things to worry about like not getting killed today. Of course the loud mouth, chickenhawk, jackass, politicians, and media bozos who would never deign to serve in the military run their mouths about the subject. But they are fools and liars and most people in the military look at them that way. These are the same pieces of human refuse who bray about how we should be torturing people to make us safer. We know they are dot doing anything at all out of concern for us but for themselves. Just like when they had no interest in providing us with the gear we need to fight their wars.
