Former President Ronald Reagan's adopted son on Monday compared liberals to termites who are "eating away at the foundations" of America.
Appearing a campaign event for Newt Gingrich in Florida, Michael Reagan encouraged attendees not to "go home and forget about it."
"If you can think of the liberals, think of them as termites eating away at the foundations of your home each and every day," he advised. "See, that's what they do every day. See, we can't afford to let them keep doing that. We can't just go home and forget about and pick up the torch three days from now or four days from now. We have to be involved each and every day if we're going to stop all that."
"So, my challenge to you is this: If you really want to be Reaganesque, write a letter. Make your own time capsule. And write into that time capsule what you are doing today, tomorrow, the next day and the next day to ensure that your grandchildren, your great grandchildren, who live on the 300th anniversary of this nation, are enjoying the same freedoms that you have today," he added.

But let me tell you something, if you wake up in the morning and you yearn to be free, if you wake up in the morning and you see that shining city on the hill and you want that shining city on the hill back where it belongs, and you want America to once again be the proudest nation in the world and have people look up to us then guess what? The "shining city on the hill" rhetoric is nothing new from Michael Reagan. Since his father's death, he has made a living by evoking the 40th president's name in paid speeches, books and columns.

Adopted children are their adoptive parent's children, and using the qualifier "adopted" in this context demeans that relationship.
I remember reading, early in Reagan's presidency, that Michael had three year old son that Ronnie had never met. I recall being very struck by Reagan's family value's hypocrisy. This was not a poor family that could not afford travel.

It is sad, in a way, how much evidence there is that conservative mindsets are a product of brain development and chemistry, that liberals generally have a larger anterior cingulate cortex, the part of the brain involved in decision-making, while conservatives had larger amygdalas, linked with emotional learning and the processing of fear.

...after reading the recent Village Voice article about her and the way in which she was raised, I'm able to feel some sympathy for her even though I disagree with her politically. Really, given what the article said about the way she was raised, it's no wonder she's so messed up...this is a woman who, when she lost her virginity before getting married, reportedly flew home in a panic to confess to her mother and then went on to marry the man whom she had slept with because she was convinced that failing to do so would mean she was a "slut."
