McConnell: Mass. race a 'referendum' on health care
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told Fox News' Brit Hume that the Senate race in Massachusetts is a referendum on the Democrats' health care reform legislation. "Massachusetts is going to be a very, very close Senate race. Regardless of who wins, we have a referendum on the national health care bill. The American people are telling us please don't pass it," McConnell explained.
Following the interview with McConnell, other Fox News pundits spoke up to agree. "The voters are aware it's a national referendum on the health care bill and Obama big government liberal programs," said Bill Kristol.
"It's a referendum on health care and the Obama agenda," agreed Charles Krauthammer.

I would say if anything it'll boil down to classic chequebook politics.
Diabolus est Deus Inversus
mcf#ckhead and the gop are so fearful that
pres. obama and the democrats will pass the
health care bill, they will resort to any means
to cause it's failure, including the fear
they are inducing in the outcome of the mass.
sp election......fuck the gop dreggs.
I think he's right. The health care clusterf$ck has emotions running high. It's a disaster of a bill and I believe it's playing a strong roll in placing a GOP retard so high in the polls in a traditionally democratic state. This so-called reform is becoming a liability to the dems in much the same way as Bush and Iraq became a liability for the GOP in 2006 and 2008.
In a state that passed healthcare reform years ago.
I guess the outcome there in MA will be determined on how long voters' memories are there -- wasn't it Republican Gov. Romney that pushed their HCR through, along with a predominantly Democratic legislature? The proposed Federal HCR looks a lot like the MA plan, which is already broken, big time broken, with a lot of constituents really angry.
Perhaps, just perhaps, it will be a referendum on the MA healthcare system, and not the mash-up currently in Congress. In which case, I would suspect that the Corporatist politicians of both mainstream political parties might be losers in this special election.
"Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable."
-- John F. Kennedy
And they hate it.
I think it more likely is a referendum on how the legislature played with the law. When Romney was governor, they took the power to appoint someone to a vacant Senate seat away from him. When Kennedy was in poor health, they gave the Democratic governor the power back. This is not the way to govern.
is a referendum on the Democrats' health care reform legislation
is a referendum on the Democrats' health care reform legislation
is a referendum on the Democrats' health care reform legislation
is a referendum on the Democrats' health care reform legislation
is a referendum on the Democrats' health care reform legislation
is a referendum on the Democrats' health care reform legislation
is intended to be a factual statement
Next week they will have all scrubbed this from their memories when Scotty boy loses.
because no one will ask them on TV, "So I guess the referendum result is, pass health care, right?"

a) Regardless of who wins, we have a referendum on the national health care bill.
b) The American people are telling us please don't pass it.
Um, both can't be true, can they?
To be decided by the good people of Massachusetts. Nothing else matters. At least until Wednesday.
One state does not make a referendum.
Damn I hate these lying republicans scum!
OMFG the OBAMA AGENDA!!!11
a liberal....yeah...uh huh.
It's not over until the fat lady sings and I hope McConnell lives to regret that statement.

The new polls say MC is back up in the polls!
Do tell.
I gauranteed you guys she would win easily - a double digit victory!
Relax; and watch the corporate GOP MSM's reaction after this Brown moron gets crushed! It will be "well it is liberal Massachusetts, what do you expect?" Nothing will be said about how bad republicans suck, and that they are no more popular with the american people today, than herpiatic lesions of the genitalia.
If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.
Sources on the poll please!
http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2010/01/fiveth...
up from yesterday.
Thanks. Soooo close.
Yes, but at least its trending back up!
This is incomplete, it fails to show the newest PPP poll showing Brown at 51 and Coakley at 46. She is trending down. It's looking very bad for her.
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust.
I don't need no stinking sources. It's just my gut feeling. The same feeling I had this week, when I bet $$$, that the Vikings would kick the crap out of Dallas.
If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.
but massachusetts IS liberal.. even more than california as far as voting...
I lived there for 30 years, in low orbit around Boston and in the Pioneer Valley. The conventional wisdom/assumption that MA is a dyed-in-the-wool liberal state is a misleading. There's more red in the state than most people are led to believe. They don't call us Mass-holes for nothing.
will remember you said that.
It is a referendum on the Obama agenda - which is anything but liberal! Obama is losing support because he is a DLC repuke-lite!
Hardly what the people voted for. If he was a liberal and passed FDR style reforms, lying sacks of shit like this McConnell idiot would be toast.
This is a sign that clueless Obama fucked-up big-time when he hired Rahm and all the other Clinton flunky repuke-lites from the 90's.
People voted for progressive ideas last year, and president dumbass gave us Joe Lieberman government. The worst part of this whole deal, is that the MSM will sell it as a liberal failure, when in fact it is just the opposite.
God I hate these lying bastards!
If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.
destroys established american power structures with a wave of his hand while surrounded by bush appointed fundie generals and corrupt justice dept and who knows what booby traps they left in the white house and a radio monopoly that gives the modern KKK 1000 radio stations to say whatever they want all day while the left ignores them!
maybe if you and millions of others had been out protesting when wellstone was assassinated and when bush's people stole numerous elections and lied us into iraq you might be saying something, but methinks you haven't been paying attention during the last 20 years battling the party of limbaugh.
Huh? What the hell are you talking about?
It's our fault because we are busy raising our families and don't have the time to go out in the streets and protest because the asshole lying sack-of-shit politicians like Obama sold us out?
What the hell does Wellstone's death have to do with people like me; who worked for democrats running as liberals, only to see them turn into Clinton flunky repuke-lites 10 minutes after the votes were counted? How is that my/our fault?
And yes, none of us who loathe Rahmabama for selling us out to the corporatists have been paying attention to Limbaugh and the other wingnuts over the last 20 years. WTF?
When are people like you going to realize that this is not the fault of liberals who got democrats elected, who later turned out to be DINO's? Furthermore, you don't know a damn thing about me, or my situation, that would qualify you to make any type of judgement about me.
If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.
dem politicians are capable of big changes quick. as long as the left lets the GOP blowhards attack their candidates and causes all day long from 1000 uncontested radio stations without picketing and or any kind of free speech talk back you might as well all just bend over for limbaugh.
dems have very little leverage in the media and can't frame and outhouse as long as those 1000 radio stations decide what's acceptable in the US and what isn't.
Thank You for saying Senator Paul Wellstone was assassinated. Few remember or even know that when former VP Walter Mondale took his place as the candidate, he refused to fly for any of the campaign events.
As for Mass., it just shows how grandly Obama has screwed himself & us.
a guy like brown only becomes a senator because the left collectively ignores the fact that 1000 radio stations get to pump out coordinated uncontested repetition all day long (see above)...
Both Obama and the current state of HCR are polling better in MA than is Coakley.
And if you haven't heard about the "Shove a curling iron up her butt!" comment, let me put it in context with a link.
All politics are local.
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust.
A long but worthwhile read from Naomi Klein. We really, really, really need a new political party to challenge the corporatocracy.

Have you read "The Shock Doctine"? Great. Read. Naomi is the bomb.
Certainly have.

When will government of the people, by the politicians, for the corporations perish from this Earth?
Not soon enough!

and the end of something called...'Limited Liability'
That would even lead to cleaner rivers....

Anybody have the numbers on the popularity of Massachusetts' recent Health Care law, mandating every resident buy private health insurance, subsidizing low income persons?
It is very similar to the US Senate Bill.
If the Massachusetts Plan is neither very popular nor holding down costs (and that's what some have alleged) then the very similar bill in the US Congress may very well be detracting from the Democrat in this race.
When will government of the people, by the politicians, for the corporations perish from this Earth?
Not soon enough!
If the Republican wins... then we win.
If the Democrat wins... then we still win.
Between now and Tuesday, it's a referendum on health care...
After Tuesday we will ignore the results and gather STRAW for another fake MAN from some other part of the country.
ANYTHING... to make Obama look bad.
?
Obama doesn't need any help. He's fucking up very nicely all on his own. If he keeps listening to Rahm, we may see president idiot Palin in our future.
If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.
Is it really Mitch, really?? Or are you just a dickwad?
far left loon >.<
yah!
Mitch 'le bitch' McConnell.
I see him every Sunday. If I repent, will he go away?
No.
Certainly, given that we pay 50% more per capita for health care than people in other industrial countries, health "reform" that doesn't close the cost gap between our country and other countries is hardly inspiring.
But then, there is the wars, which is more of the same.
But, I think it's the bailouts of Wall Street, coupled with the lack of criminal prosecutions for the kingpins responsible for this financial meltdown that has hurt Obama, and by extension, Coakley's ratings in the polls. Given that the rating of the mortgage backed securities was AAA, which allowed the securities to be sold at a profit, which caused the enterprise to scale, I thought that a charge of conspiracy to defraud the purchasers of those securities by misrepresenting the risk of those securities may have been appropriate. In any event, the lack of any of the participants landing in jail, who are instead divvying up over $100B in bonuses is sinking Obama and democrats in the polls.
..by the end of Obama's first term will determine whether he gets a second term. The way things are going, we better hope Alan Grayson launches a Primary Challenge in 2011.
Mickey: "It was an epiphany. Do you know what an epipany is?"
Keoni: "NOT NOW MICKEY!"
For every time McConnell or his buddy Boehner get in front of a camera and pretend to speak for "The American People", well, I'd have a lot of nickels. Those two fools wouldn't know a real american even if one came up to them and bit them in the ass.Their arrogance makes me want to throw up.
What he means by "the american people," is dumbfuck bigot morons who will cheer for the assholes like him, who are in reality the SOB's who are destroying their lives. They can pull this bait and switch on the weak minded, because the lying SOS wraps himself in a flag and waves his bible.
This renders the bigoted dim-wits from figuring out the obvious - that they are voting for the most unamerican theives and degenerates this country has ever produced, and for their own economic suicide!
If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.
Just vote.
"Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob"
-= Franklin Delano Roosevelt =-
Seems the sane and sensible are losing ground to the insane and the very very stupid in this country .The Senate race in Massachusetts is a referendum on how F'd up the people of Massachusetts are . Has the mental disease spread and taken hold there too ? We shall see .
Insanity , it is what it is , there is no understanding it .
if you read the online comments at the Hearald and the Globe you will find It is a referendum on progressive agenda.
the main issues MA has with the verison of universal healthcare that they have now is that illegals are being allowed to access it. I guess they see the national bill as more of the same. Not to mention they really don't want to be taxed for this new bill even while they have universal care they are not happy with already. The hat trick is that just about everyone in MA hates Coakley, she is very unpopular.
health care because they already have their own and National may cost them more. They're being selfish which is the new American and Republican way. The I've got mine thinking. Coakley has also been a disaster. You'd think in a liberal Democratic state that they could of found a hugely popular person to run. McConnel and the others on this panel are all of the I've got mine and what can I get by denying others persuasion.
sure, what are they thinking wanting to stop a bill that makes sense to anyone? Not even the far left that has pushed for it so bad. I think you should trust them when they tell us that universal healthcare with no type of I.D. system in place will be exploited by illegals in a very large way. Costing the country a fortune. After all, they have been living it. These are the same people you would have rabidly defended two weeks ago. They are not selfish they are doing the country a favor. I guess it is like I have been saying some people seem to think that progressive liberals are the same thing as Democrats. I think MA is saying otherwise.
..you'll step back from all the obstructionism and start helping the Democrats pass GOOD bills for the American people that include a Public Option and Financial Reforms? Nah, I didn't think so.
Mickey: "It was an epiphany. Do you know what an epipany is?"
Keoni: "NOT NOW MICKEY!"
You want a referendum, McConnell?
This November, in all 50 States, a referendum on a Single Payor Medicare For All insurance system.
YOU CAN'T HANDLE A REFERENDUM!
To some degree it matters who's in office, but it matters more how much pressure they're under from the public. - Noam Chomsky
Single Payer!
Kick the Republicans AND the Democrats out.
BASTARDS.
statusquObama, change you can only pretend in
but I think it will be a referendum on Coakley's lack of energy in campaigning, and hopefully she will win and then Dems can say it was a referendum on whether Rethugs will ever be fit for any elective office ever again. I'd say it will take 50+ years for that, and a purge of the hard right.
Of course, the people, even in liberal Mass, could prove they are as everlastingly stupid as usual.
According to a right wing Fear and Hate Mongering White Traailer Trash republican, teabagger a LIBERAL is anyone that thinks different then us is NOT White (by our standards, and has any type of accent, must be of Racist Nazi Christian beliefs as demonstrated by the Scum Bag roburpson.
So if you do not except right wing Fear and Hate Mongering you are a LIBERAL.
The
as you so eloquently put it, are working class dupes of the Republicans.
When they are xenophobic, when they are racist, when they are poorly educated and the first two points are a clear indication of the third point by themselves, I would suggest that they are candidates for a society that works very much harder to educate its citizens.
Universal education as far as you can go, a socialist regime, in other words.
The Republicans' Masters are the Ruling Class, if they are going to continue with the charade of democracy they need votes. The Republicans orchestrate their dupes more or less successfully but they never apologize for representing the Corporate powerful.
However I would suggest that the continued denigration of the working class dupes of the Republicans is part of the master plan of the Ruling Class. It is a plan of divide and conquer, something they must undertake in a supposedly democratic society where they are outnumbered 99 to 1.
The Democrats of the New Deal in the Great Depression very briefly pushed left to a social political position far truer to the sense of the nation.
However it was done without the completely manifested civil rights of the nations African Americans, or other minorities.
The second and finally coming of the New Deal Democrats in the 1960s saw the Civil Rights legislation and Medicare. The former had several rather immediate and long lasting antithetical political consequences, the full exploration of which will take volumes. The later has special meaning today.
But those first and second generation New Deal Democrats have long gone, the party today is a hollow shell of its former self and now ALSO reflects the interest of the Corporate powerful.
However they find it useful to point to their laurels of yesteryear, because otherwise they have little distinction with the Republicans.
The Ruling Class has overtaken BOTH parties and the Democrats themselves now must have working class dupes.
It is the Grand Strategy of the Ruling Class.
If the 62% to 80% of the country who are working class people ever completely awakened to their true interests and managed to put aside if not resolve the wedge issues that the Ruling Class continually thrusts into the dialogue, they, the Ruling Class would need to cancel all elections and rule by fiat.
They would have no choice, there would be no way they could win.
They would then rule by fiat until the working class revolted and cut their heads off, or whatever.
statusquObama, change you can only pretend in
According to them both booshes were liberals and/or progressives.
Diabolus est Deus Inversus
Hey, Mitch! Where did you have your open heart surgery done? Was it at some private, HMO run, shit hole in your home state of Kaintuck? Fuck no! It was Bethesda Naval Medical Center, a government run facility that is quite possibly the best fucking cardiac center in the whole goddamn world. You fucking hypocrite!
Unless of course the Democrat wins, in which case they obviously stole the election because nothing is ever a referendum against Republicans no matter how many millions of votes they lose by.
