Newly minted frontrunner New Gingrich became the latest Republican to get "mic checked" by the Occupy movement at a campaign event in Jacksonville, Florida Thursday.

One tea party supporter agreed with Gingrich that the current 99 Percent protests were "destructive" to America.

"Do you have a directive -- do you have a statement that you would make to that movement [as president]?" the man asked.

"There is a strain of hostile people on the left organized across the country who believe in trashing things, believe in destroying things," Gingrich replied. "Who do they think paid for the park they are sleeping in? Who do they thing paid for the bathroom they want to use? Who do they think paid for the food they're eating?"

"America wasn't created by people who woke up every morning saying, 'You owe me,'" he continued. "I think we ought to confront them head on. The last point I'd make: Every city government has an absolute obligation to enforce the rule of law and to protect private property and, frankly, they ought to be filming these people, and every person who engages in violence ought be given a very long vacation from the streets in order to contemplate why in the future, they're not going to engage in violence against fellow Americans. But none of them should be tolerated if they engage in violence against persons or property."

As the candidate was finishing his remarks, a group of protesters delivered their own message.

"Mic check!" a protester yelled.

"Mic check!" was the reply.

The activists began to chant something about "the 99 percent" before being drowned out by tea party supporters.

"Hold on," Gingrich told the crowd. "I want to answer you very directly. There is no such thing in America as 99 percent! We are 100 percent Americans! We are all part of America!"

Out of touch much, Mr. Newt?

That answer makes me think Mr. Newt has no clue about what the 99% is all about. Does he think that some people are 99% American?

CNN showed some of his shindig and I watched as much as I could stand but either they didn't show this (no surprise there) or it happened after my head exploded.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

"America wasn't created by people who woke up every morning saying, 'You owe me.'" - Gingrich

So Gingrich is against bailing out the "too big to fail" banks, oil company subsidies, tax breaks for major corporations and for an open internet? Or, is it only poor people who aren't owed anything?

daganium's picture

..leave it to the poster boy for 1% excesses, greed, theft & lowlife activities in general to deny there is a 99%.

"Who do they think paid for the park they are sleeping in? Who do they thing paid for the bathroom they want to use? Who do they think paid for the food they're eating?"

This proves he really doesn't get it. We KNOW who pays for these things. WE DO. With our taxes. And we don't MIND paying for the things that this country needs. It is HIS party that wants to eliminate the need for people to pay for the price of civilization. It is HIS party who want it to be every man for himself. It is HIS party who wants every thing on earth to have a price tag on it that will generate more profit for those in the 1%. Yes, Newtie Boy, there most definitely IS a 99%, and a 1%. YOU have chosen to align yourself with the 1%, and use lies and fearmongering to divide the rest in order to get the ignorant among them to ignore their own self-interests so that they will provide cover for YOU and the WEALTHY AND POWERFUL who want only to continue to rape and pillage the 99%

Every city government has an absolute obligation to enforce the rule of law and to protect private property and, frankly, they ought to be filming these people, and every person who engages in violence ought be given a very long vacation from the streets in order to contemplate why in the future, they're not going to engage in violence against fellow Americans.

In case you haven't noticed, you Kermit the Frog impersonator, it is the POLICE who are the ones engaging in violence. Or did that 84 year-old, 90 pound grandmother who got pepper-sprayed by the police in Seattle really pose that big a threat. I don't care how much anti-occupy propaganda is spewed out by Faux News and AM radio, the PEOPLE understand in increasing numbers that the PEOPLE of America are sick and tired of YOUR KIND, and are committed to changing the way things are done in this country.

The biggest threat you and your kind have to fear is the TRUTH, and the onstoppable VOICES of the people who will CONTINUE to shout from the street and the rooftops until you and your kind get you heads out of your rectums and pay attention.

Corporations are not citizens. Corporations with a presence in the US are sometimes managed by citizens of other countries. Money buys votes. Yes Newt, there is a 99%.

The 1% are the Occupy protesters - much as it pains me to say that - and I think those people and the progressives who support them should realize that and leave the U.S.

Rich H's picture

Well thought out.

freequark's picture

Surely all the countries outside the U.S. could hold 3 million or even 30 million immigrants.

Let's face the facts:

- Roughly half the voters in the U.S. consistently align themselves with the GOP. These people tend to be fully supportive of corporations, and because they are conservative, they are unlikely to change their politics regardless of the economic situation.

- Most of the rest of the other half of voters in the U.S. are Democrats, and these people are at least tacitly supportive of corporations, as they are dependent on corporations for jobs, consumer goods, etc. It follows the Democrats are never to be an effective counter to corporate power, even when they are in the majority. For example, blue collar workers who depend on environmentally-destructive activities like logging and mining are always going to prevent the Democratic Party from taking strong positions on the environment.

- The people who don't fit into either of those categories - i.e., progressives - are clearly a very small minority in the U.S., probably no more than 3 to 30 million people, judging by the Occupy movement. Now it's clear that what these people want is a lifestyle that is not dominated by corporations, but since the U.S. is a democracy, they are never going to have that as long as they remain in the U.S. Furthermore, they are going to lose badly on every single issue that is important to them - the environment, globalization, secularism, you name it .

- These demographics are unlikely to change, as children who are raised by Republicans or Democrats tend to adopt their parents' politics as adults.

Given this set of facts, it follows that progressive Americans are only ever going to be able to live in the sort of country they want if they leave the U.S. While I'm sure a lot of progressives don't like to accept this reality, it's the reality nonetheless.

Rich H's picture

However, while the republicans may never be intelligent enough to know they are being screwed, the democrats (including those in denial) will eventually come to that conclusion even if they are employed by corporations.

I've been employed by corporations before - and I've known full well (as did everyone I worked with) we were being exploited and taken advantage of.

The #ows people are just ahead of the curve.

As for moving to another country. Yeah, I've long wanted to. This one is way too fuc*ed up.

Al B Tross's picture

Because I am seeing some big holes in your argument.

"These demographics are unlikely to change, as children who are raised by Republicans or Democrats tend to adopt their parents' politics as adults. "
Really? I have read otherwise, here...http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~altemey/

True it's only a 30 year study, peer reviewed, and whose findings have been called "empirical", it's testing methodology 80-90% accurate.

Is it possible to be a progressive Democrat? wouldn't that person span over two out of the three ONLY choices?, how about a fiscal Conservative, but Social Liberal?

I would assert there are far more variations, and a greater complexity to the American elecorate, than your argument suggests.

freequark's picture

True it's only a 30 year study, peer reviewed, and whose findings have been called "empirical", it's testing methodology 80-90% accurate.

How then do you explain the fact that the U.S. has been dominated by the Democratic and Republican Parties for more than a century? One would think that if a generation of young people hated the politics - and thus the political parties - of their parents, then a third major party would've emerged at some point in the last hundred years.

Is it possible to be a progressive Democrat?

Judging by the progressive caucus in Congress, the answer is no. At the end of the day, all Democratic politicians are corporatists and globalists, which is proven by their voting records. Whether or not they *claim* to be progressive is irrelevant.

how about a fiscal Conservative, but Social Liberal?

What you're describing here is a Democrat. In fact, social liberalism is precisely how the corporate Democrats continue to get the votes of young people opposed to corporate domination of the U.S.

I would assert there are far more variations, and a greater complexity to the American elecorate, than your argument suggests.

That may well be true, but whatever variations exist cancel out in the end, so that what remains is a corporate duopoly. For example, you may have a Republican politician who is somewhat liberal on environmental issues. This person will cancel the vote of a Democratic politician who is conservative on environmental issues.

saying, 'You owe me.'"

It sure as hell was. And those people had a strong sense of what constitutes a fair exchange in the relationship between citizenry and nation, where citizens "fund" this country over and over - with their blood, their taxes, their intelligence, their leadership, etc.

And those citizens have every right to expect something back.

Otherwise, what you have is exploitation - the kind of exploitation that happens when 1 of 2 parties in an exchange relationship takes without giving back in fair measure.

The people who created and continue to create America are owed something if they, their parents, grandparents, et al. have paid over and over to America.

Taking from people and then berating them when they say "You owe me" is standard stuff for callous, swindling conservatives who make a practice of this kind of shenanigans in business and politics.
