Bachmann Tells Man With 'No Teeth' to Rely on Charity
Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann told a man who said he had no teeth that single-payer health care was the "worst possible system."
At a campaign stop in New Hampshire Monday, a man asked the candidate about her desire to "wean everybody" except for older Americans off of Social Security and Medicare.
"The president in all likelihood plans that Medicare will collapse and go broke and instead, what will happen is that everyone will go into Obamacare," Bachmann argued. "There's too many beautiful 85-year-old frail women who are depending on this system. And I love these senior citizens too much to have them worried that that's not going to be there for them... We made a promise. We have to keep the promise. For these beautiful young people that are here today, we can't chain them to a 75 percent effective tax rate. I won't do that to these people."
By the time the man asked his follow-up question, the campaign staff has already taken away the microphone, making his comments inaudible. But it was clear from Bachmann's response and from journalist Charlie Perkins that the man had said he had "no teeth."
Video of the exchange indicated that the man did have at least a few teeth.
"You want socialized medicine," Bachmann said. "I want you to have the best dental health care you can have. I want you to have the best health care you can have, and that's why I don't want you to have socialized medicine. That would be the worst possible system you could have."
"The free market provides you with the best system and we have charitable organizations and there's universities who are willing to take people are indigent. There are programs that are set up for the indigent, but don't destroy the finest health care system in the world to have socialized medicine because we have people who are indigent in the society. We take care of people who are indigent, people without funds. We do that through charity or we do that through university programs."
The American healthcare system is not by ANY meaningful measurement the "best" at anything, unless you're talking about being profitable.

My 41 year old cousin passed away this summer(he was a lifelong drug addict and diabetic...would inject himself immediately after leaving his dialysis) we knew his end was near, so I allowed him to stay with me sometimes(when I could keep an eye on him :) Even thought he has been indigent for many years and the hospital was aware of his status he continued(and still does) get medical bills even after I sent his death certificate to Cook County hospital.

My husband saved the money for them. My mother helped me with getting the old ones pulled, which cost nearly $2k. We're not exactly indigent. He's retired, I sub teach part-time. Baylor is exactly as described above, in that you have to get on a waiting list nearly 2 years long, and pay to get in. They only do the work they want to teach that day. And they certainly don't do dentures.
I'm at this point because for all those years I was a food stamp mom, Medicaid paid for my children's dental care but the most I could get was an extraction. We're talking long-term gum disease here, and in the last few years my teeth started falling out. But I couldn't get anything done about it until I could come up with fairly large chunks of money.

Canadian public health insurance does not cover dental care.
Most people have private dental insurance. Which is generally affordable, in part because provincial health insurance premiums are so low (I pay $54 per month, but that's because I'm self-employed - otherwise the cost would be deducted from my paycheque along with taxes).

Tooth extraction costs approximately fifteen dollars! Oh Nooos, we don't want anything like that here. It would be socialist medicine. She can always make more money as Congressperson.
I believe this should be a bipartisan issue but here we go: anyone running for an office that is not the one they currently hold should give back that day's pay to the Treasury (state or federal). We'll make an allowance for reelection since that is part of the job, communicating with the people they represent. I think that is fair. If they are not doing their job to run for a different office they shouldn't be compensated for the "day off." Most employees don't even get "free" days off when they or a family member is ill so why should people like Bachmann get to fly all over the country on her district's dime. Or Rick Perry fly all over the country on Texas' dime? He has seventeen million so he should pay Texas back for every day of campaigning in another state.

Charity may have been helpful in the past but certain people seem to be becoming more resentful and mean-spirited. For instance, would you rely on any of these people who think the poor should rely of charity for their necessities to actually donate to the charities? I remember my father, shortly before he died, asking me, "When did it become such a terrible thing to be a 'do-gooder?'" And, of course nobody wants to be a "bleeding heart." And if a group of different people make an effort to get along they are derided as being too "kumbyah"
is that the 'indigent' (who uses that degrading term for fellow citizens?) should seek out some charity to pay for their health and dental care needs.
I guess Michelle has not heard.....but we're still in a recession, the economy is not recovering that much (for most people), millions don't have or can't find decent jobs (about 20 million, or so), the home foreclosures are still happening every day, hunger is increasing, those without jobs don't have health insurance (brilliant system) and even those who do have Medicare don't get dental coverage.
Ergo, many of the middle class folks who used to support a number of charities when they had decent jobs and some money in the bank, are now unable to send money to help out their fellow citizens who are even worse off. So, the charities do not have the funds or other resources to handle the ever-increasing numbers of people who require assistance.
And, Michelle and her fellow Repukes are even making the whole problem worse and adding costs to the health care system by restricting access to sex education, STD treatment, birth control, abortions, and pre-natal healthcare for women.
The good news is that Michelle Bachmann has no freakin' chance of ever being elected President ....and, maybe not even re-elected to her job as Rep. Thank dog!

So instead of the government providing a moderate amount of care for all (while not preventing people from buying better care if they so choose), she'd rather have people begging for charities and universities that even if they wanted to (and I'm sure they want to), wouldn't have the means to provide anything but the most basic of care and certainly wouldn't be able to provide for all that need it. Dental care is something so basic, but so important to being able to accomplish pretty much anything else. I doubt too many people would be able to pull themselves up by their bootstraps like Bachmann would like if they can't even chew without severe pain. I need to take some time to really work through it, but I see this continuing pattern on the right of not wanting to actually try to improve the situation for others even if in the long term it means an improved standard of living for themselves as well.
