Average Corporate Tax Rate Falls to 12%, Lowest in Decades
Many Americans were shocked last month to learn that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney only paid an effective tax rate of 13.8 percent in 2010, but a recent report shows that corporations are paying even less.
Corporations in the U.S. paid only an average of 12.1 percent in taxes on the profits they earned inside the U.S in fiscal 2011, according to statistics from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).
The Wall Street Journal reports that it's the lowest percentage corporations have paid on those profits since at least 1972, and it's less than half of the 25.6 percent they paid on average between 1987 and 2008.
Corporations saw their profits, however, reach an all-time high at the end of 2010. The $1.68 trillion in annualized profits in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2010 beat the previous record of $1.65 trillion in the third quarter of 2006.
The Journal credited the low rate to a temporary tax break, known as "bonus depreciation," which allowed companies to immediately write off certain investments instead of taking write-offs over a period of years.
In an interview with NBC earlier this year, Romney flat-out stated that President Barack Obama had raised taxes on corporations.
"If you want to get the economy going, lower corporate tax rates," he said. "He’s raised them."
Since 1993, the marginal corporate rate has been at 35 percent. Romney has proposed that it be reduced to 25 percent.
Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich has said the he would "create a boom of new American entrepreneurship by dramatically cutting the corporate tax rate" to 12.5 percent (PDF), one of the lowest in the developed world.
During his State of the Union Address last month, the president also opened the door to lowering the corporate rate "without adding to our deficit." In their 2010 report (PDF), the President's Economic Recovery Advisory Board discussed lowering the marginal rate to 28 percent.

deduct the 10% Romney wants to cut, the effective corporate tax rate would be 2%.
What a deal.
What's with all the hate of corporations here? I love the products that Microsoft and Google and Apple have invented and offered for sale. I want them to continue growing and hiring!
So...
He is serious.
me-oww!
.
The computer I'm using right now was made by a huge corporation. I love it! It was cheap and 100s of times more powerful than computers made 10 years ago.
and the field of computing is due to a certain homosexual genius named Alan Turing.
So using your logic, you must love gay communists as well.
CTHULHU 2012 "Why vote for a lesser evil?"
The computer you're using right now was obsolete 6 months after you bought it. Do you really think it would be so bad if that particular corporation was forced to slow down their advances just a bit? Heck, a couple guys in a garage would probably have a bit more leeway in advancing computing in new and innovative ways if a couple corporations didn't completely dominate the market. Why are you so anti-entrepreneur?
Yup, and the engineers that would have made that computer 10 years ago are now jobless, because their jobs are in china and india.....ah outsource economics!
Corps move offshore. As a pre-emptive tactic, governments have, in the past, nationalized corp assets BEFORE the "flew the coop". Just saying'.
The United States aspires to democracy, but no true democracy is attainable when the process is determined by economic power.
I've dealt with some companies internationally.
In some countries you are not allowed to take your profits out of the country as hard currency. You've got to take it out of the country in the form of goods.
So where's our President on stopping this? BTW. I AM an Obama supporter.
That's it. I'm incorporating myself.
Where are the jobs?
They aren't even paying for the ROADS they use to transport all their shit made in China.
Reduce the corporate tax to zero, but tax ALL income as ordinary income. (Including inheritance.)
There, the case is solv-ed.
....corporations are people...shouldn't they pay the same tax rate as you and I?
won't be happy until they have a corporate tax rate of zero and every citizen is paying them "tributes" just for the privelege of living in the same country as the corporations have their headquarters.
Or something...
Religion will be the downfall of Humanity.
Any person of average intelligence can see where things are heading. The Right and The Corporate Elite have figured out that they can actually convince us that the wealthy and the corporations are over taxed and over regulated. There is a large slice of the American public who believes this crap. The goal here ultimately is for the corporations to have total rule over our lives - they want to get bigger and bigger and richer and richer and they have found a way for the common man to assist them in this goal. Democracy only stands in their way. Yes, their tax rate is only 12%, but I would argue that when all is said and done, it will be zero percent - Unless of course we harness democracy to stop them.

start giving up on what America is. We give up on the infrastructure. We give up on education. We give up on healthcare. What am I saying? We've already giving up on it all. People are dying for no reason other than they can't afford healthcare. It's getting expensive to go to the doctor. The roads in this country are a joke. Education is a battleground of republicans who know nothing about the classroom and don't really give a rip and teachers who are wrung out and just trying to save the unions. Small towns have no money for basic needs like police and fire.
I just want to scream STOP!. People need to look at what we had twenty years ago. They need to look at what republicans are trying to take away. Everything that made the middle class comfortable and secure in this country is being grabbed from us by a group who wants it all. Why is anybody buying into this bullshit?

America loves its corporations as they wipe-out a once great productive nation. Looted of it manufacturing capacity, looted of its personal & public wealth, the oligarchs are finishing off America by debasing the US dollar. Politicians see the results of their greed and are now powerless to stop the decline of equality. "We the people" are all debt slaves now.
Don't forget, this is 12% off of net dividends....operating costs are not taxed. As a simple individual we get to pay 35% on net income! Our losses are worthless. Thinking of it that way, corps are probably paying more like 5% on net income.
