8-Year-Old to Bachmann: 'My Mommy's Gay But She Doesn't Need Any Fixing'
Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann appeared stunned Sunday after an 8-year-old South Carolina boy told her that his gay mother didn't "need any fixing."
The candidate was signing her memoir Core of Conviction for a scant few supporters at a Myrtle Beach Books-A-Million when 8-year-old Elijah stepped forward with a message.
"You said it, but I think my ears were too far away," Bachmann told the boy as she leaned over the table, pulling him close.
"Ms. Bachmann, my mommy's gay but she doesn't need any fixing," Elijah whispered into her ear.
The dumbfounded GOP hopeful slowly stood up with her wide eyes glaring at the mother.
"Bye, bye," she waved.
During her visit to Books-A-Million Sunday, Bachmann was also reportedly "mic checked" by Occupy Myrtle Beach.
Last week, another young activist, Jane Schmidt of the Waverly High School Gay-Straight Alliance in Iowa, pressed the candidate on why same sex couples couldn't get married.
"They can get married," Bachmann insisted. "They can marry a man if they’re a woman. Or they can marry a woman if they’re a man."

Regardless of the cause, I cannot stand when parents use their kids as props this way. Do you really think this kid comes across as comfortable and willing here?
Parent thinks it'll be some magic moment where the entire room is brought to silent tears as their precious little angel changes the world with their innocence.
Reality is that the kid doesn't want to do it and the parent shouldn't be asking them to. Because even if it's the kids idea (which it so clearly is not), I don't care what little kids have to say about politics.
I agree 100%.....
This is just very sad and C&L should not celebrate it.
I'm with teaspoon and admire. Now if this was a 12 or 13 year old kid who decided to do it on his or her own I'd have no problem with it. But you can clearly see they practiced it at home and the child did not want to do it. I'm not defending Bachmann the cold blooded bigot but don't do this to a child.
is intended to be a factual statement
Who thought this showed incredibly poor taste on the mother's part, which makes me cringe, because I think Bachmann deserves everything coming her way -- except when it involves the humiliation of a child.

Standing up to "Authority". You would deprive him of that. You have no idea what kind of brainwashing evangelical christian children are exposed to. Count on the application of the usual double standard from the right wing.
It's more than just politicians. His mother did not seem interested in his standing up to her authority as she pressed him to make her point for her.
You mean like when the Westboro Baptist Chrurch shows up with 8 year-olds holding signs that say
"God Hates Fags"?

with you. Using children as a shield is cheap, wether it done by politicians or ordinary people.
I can't stand Michele Bachmann and I think she's insane.
That said, I couldn't agree with you more. Not only do I not like this, but I think that the video made Bachmann look human and sweet, the way she leaned over the table so the child could get close and whisper to her. UGH!
Based upon that video clip how can you make that assessment that (A) the kid didn't want to do it and (B) that it wasn't the kid's idea?
If you don't care what kids have to say, then why are you even bothering to type in a response other than to say just that?

Based on my experience:
(A) the kid didn't want to do it
(B) it wasn't the kid's idea
Is that your kid?
Your kids don't equate to every other kid.

Who said they don't care what kids have to say? The kid didn't want to do it because he said, TWICE, that he didn't want to do it and he choked and spoke really quietly while hiding his face.
In his last sentence he wrote: "Because even if it's the kids idea (which it so clearly is not), I don't care what little kids have to say about politics."

Thought you were replying to someone else. These threads get a little tricky to track after a while.
I haven't hanged out here in a long while, so I'm still trying to get a feel of the players involved. Some of the old guard is still around, but with new ones as well.

Into the brain of an idiot.
Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.
I totally agree with the kid. we can hope that this incident may help "fix" Bachman and her bigotry.
Hopefully humanity will one day learn to be humane.
I understand the kid and he is ofcourse 100% right.....I just always feel a little weird when so young children are being involved with politics, no matter how powerful it is. It always seems coached.
Bachmann is a piece of work, but I do at least credit her for having a good way with children. She is hampered by insane convictions but seems to be good with children....Imagine if she could show compassion for gays too.
at least she , bachman, did not say anything disgusting in response!
No, she came over great....Thats what so said.
It's moments like this, I have hope for this country. Bachmann can go to hell.

Would her husband agree with that?

...really wanted to say that. (he seemed a little hesitant)
I don't approve at all.
If that kids mother wanted someone to to give Bachmann a piece of their mind she should have done it herself.
audit-prosecute-incarcerate
Agreed. I really don't like it when anyone uses their kids as political props and tools. There's plenty to say on this issue and the women should have just stepped up and said it directly to Bachmann herself.
...opportunity.
audit-prosecute-incarcerate
Agreed. If it was that important to the mother, she could say it to Bachmann herself. Then she gets to be heard *and* her son gets to see her standing up to a bigot.
Exactly.....Saying that message when you standing with your child would be very powerful....instead it became a sad story.
His mom should be ashamed of herself, coercing an eight year-old boy to say something like that to an adult when he clearly was not comfortable about doing it. Why didn't she say it herself?
She set up her son for possible public humiliation. If Michele Bachmann had asked him why he said that, how would he respond? Chances are, he would not know what to say or do.
That being said, I am glad that someone put Mrs. Bachmann on the spot for her anti-gay rhetoric. However, I am disgusted that a mother used her young child to do this against his will.
that poor little guy was in turmoil. he oviously didn't want to do it.
If he would have been loud and proud it would have put Bachmann on a real spot.
This was an ambush that got some press but I was uncomfortable watching it.
The woman did no good for her cause because anybody that watches this feels bad for that child.
I don't need any pawns to set my ambushes, a right hook usually does the job.

Sell 'em short & help 'em crash - Tear 'em apart & sell the pieces
Agreed. This was painful and I had to stop halfway through when it became apparent the kid wanted nothing to do with this. Guess I empathized a little too much with the poor tyke.
She didn't look "dumbfounded" and she didn't glare at anyone. If anything, she looked dismayed.
"Fox News is a cancer on our Nation" -- Me
Exactly.....I have a tendency to see the good in people, and while a million negative things can be said about Bachmann, there is no doubt that she comes out great here....She seemed like a nice person for a change....i know thats not the case but can anyone honestly say that HER behaviour towards this child was in anyway wrong? No....But the mother should be ashamed of playing their game.
Wonder what would be said if the kid said something like "Jesus is your savior"?

When will government of the people, by the politicians, for the corporations perish from this Earth?
Not soon enough!
The boy looks shy - not unusual for a child his age in that setting - but not unwilling. Children are very capable of letting the world know when they're being forced to do something against their will - from his body language I'd say the worst part for him was when she pulled him closer. I can imagine him hearing this lady on TV and telling his mum "I'd like to give that lady a piece of my mind" and his mum providing him with the opportunity. He's 8 - not stupid.
...was chicken.

Well, yes. I mean, if we hallucinate an entire scenario where the child isn't being forced on camera to say something he's clearly uncomfortable saying, and instead decide he's the reincarnation of Harvey Milk, then yes, the mother isn't an overbearing twit who uses her child for political stunts.
Since we're halfway there, why don't we imagine she's Batman as well. Then she's downright awesome.
...that Harvey Milk was gay, right? So you think the boy was being forced to pretend to be gay by his parents? Not that he is a probably straight kid who's heard his mother attacked by a total stranger for political gain and thinks she's full of it?

What exactly is being "stuck in this dominionist hag's face"?
Let's review. A kid manages to whisper out a one-liner to Bachmann. Bachmann is actually doing very well trying to help the child push though his obvious discomfort with what he's about to say. When he says it, she sits back, stares in the mother in dumbfounded amazement that she would use her son in a political stunt, and then says 'bye.'
I'm not seeing the win here. I'm seeing a cheap YouTube stunt at the expense of a little boy.
Anyone who felt their stomach churn when Caribou Barbie would hoist Trig aloft like a newborn lion cub at campaign events should be equally appalled at this. There's no exception given for shady behavior just because it's used against people you don't like.
Apparantly we have a lot of people in here without the courage of their convictions and with blinders on. We lost big time here....
Im really sad that this was even posted here, because we should be must better than this.

Someone should really ask Mrs. Bachmann whether she practices (and enjoys) oral sex. Yes or No?
After all it is not essential for procreation
Just askin'
I can't believe so many read this as the parents insisting that the kid protest. Not according to the parents. The kid insisted on it, they say. Then he got shy when the woman was right there.
It's a conceivable interpretation of this clip, but it's really not necessary. I remember, I had my own political opinions when I was this age. Of course, a lot of them resembled my parents' views, but a lot didn't.
I'm wondering where this certainty that "the mother forced the child" comes from? From the same place that "Shut up, kid." comes from?
His mother's a lesbian. Think the kid doesn't feel that people are beating up on his mom?
I don't care what the parents think....Watch the damn video.
I am by no means a fan of Michele Bachmann. I think she's crazy and I oppose pretty much any policy idea she proposes or gloms onto, but this video fails.
There is no way of knowing whether or not the child was acting without any encouragement from his mother. Nevertheless, it actually makes her look sweet and kind while she leans over the table so the child could whisper in her ear.
Right message, wrong tactic.
Nice assessment there Bill Frist.
It must be awesome to continue to analyze situations when all you have is a video clip.
"When are we going to stop trying to tell elected officials what to do. Our job is to spend the taxpayers' money the best way we can." -- Tommy Watkins, Justice of the Peace, Crawford County, Arkansas
I had many loud and proud political convictions. My son, when he was 8, would have insisted on telling Michelle off. But my son is a born showman. I watch each year as my son's school does author's teas, where each kid reads their short illustrated work to a packed room. At 8, many of the kids- even knowing 90% of the people in the audience and having rehearsed their story- mumble and act uncomfortable. Here's how it would have played out in my family when I was 8.... there would have been a discussion. maybe stemming from one mom reading the newspaper and seeing Michelle B would be book signing. One mom reads it, the other says something like "well, I know where we aren't going". Kid asks, who MB is, and why mom doesn't like her. Or the kid saw the news clip with her saying one of her lovely statements about gay families. If mom explains that Michelle and her husband own a clinic that "fixes" gays so they won't be anymore, or says, MB thinks we are broken and need fixing, then I can well imagine MY son's reaction- precisely the words the kid used. He finds the whole problem folks have with SSM ridiculous. He went off about the guy who told me on line I didn't have a family, or kids, simply because I am female, and the boy's birth mother is female. This was years ago.
I can well see my son, or myself at that age, insisting on meeting this woman to tell her my parents are not broken, so don't need fixing. I know I would have practically freaked if this woman who says nasty things about my parents leaned in so close, and I would have been offended by the "my ears were too far away to hear"..WTF? Your average 8 year old is going to be nervous at challenging an adult, no matter whose idea it was, they are going to feel patronized by the "ears" comment, instead of a simple, "I'm sorry, can you speak up? There's too much noise in here", and is going to be horribly uncomfortable at having someone who said mean things about my parents leaning in close all friendly like.
I would guess the folks who are offended by this boy speaking out are of the sort that believe children should be seen and not heard. That children have no opinions of their own. I try really hard to be non-partisan and give no opinion when I tell my son about news items. I fill in all the facts I know, then state both sides of a political debate. I want him to learn to analyze things and form opinions for himself. I do note that armed with the facts, he tends toward beng a progressive liberal :-). Occasionally we disagree. I don't mind, it is healthy, My first GOTV effort was when I was 9 almost 10. Was I exploited because I wanted to knock on doors for Hubert Humphrey? There were no cell phones, You Tube. I assure you I was nervous and less than eloquent with a lot of the adults who answered the door. But I wasn't forced into it, nor was I "coached". My parents coached me at my request for our 5th grade election debate. But quit assuming the kid was either coached or exploited unless the kid tells you that is what happened. I think you are projecting your own belief that kids are dumb, and only do stuff like this if forced by an adult. I was raised to participate in dinner table convos with the adults as far back as I recall. Like under the age of 5. While my opinions tended to mirror my parents and friends, that's normal, and I could ask, and did, the why behind the opinions.
Would anyone be bitching if the kid had gone up and said "Jesus loves you"? Even looking obviously coached? No, y'all would be ooohing about how cute it was.
If vegetarians eat vegetables, what do humanitarians eat?
And you were quite the amazing 8 year old. I guess kids have changed since I was 8.
My 9 year old is well aware that 2 of my sisters are gay. She knows that some women love women, and some men love men. She knows some people are against the idea of them getting married, and that this is just bigotry. Beyond that, she's just not so keyed into the whole political debate. And yet , she is very smart. Not having a strong developed opinion of this doesn't mean I think she's a dumb kid, just a kid.
"I would guess the folks who are offended by this boy speaking out are of the sort that believe children should be seen and not heard"
I would guess you're not reading a damn thing they are saying.
and anything that makes her look like the fool she is, is OK by me.
In 1972 I was 8 years-old, the same age as this little guy. I obviously didn't understand the war and certainly all the politics involved. But I knew the war upset my father, a WWII veteran, who called it "stupid." I knew what stupid meant. I knew what dead was. Had my mother set me up in something like this asking such a question about the Vietnam War - well, looking back I would have much preferred that instead of having to get up in front of the church to recite Bible verses.
I've seen some stuff, man. And some thangs...
That's just a shitty thing to do to your own kid. He has no idea what this means in real terms.
Don't use your kids, people. Have something to say?? Friggin' Say It Yourself!
One very early memory I have is my father taking me into the voting booth with him each election day (this was in the days when they were like confesionals, with curtains preserving the privacy of the ballot marking). He held me up with his left arm so I could see, and marked the ballot with his right, telling me the names of the people he was voting for and the offices they would hold. Later, if I had questions, he explained who these people were and what they did when they were elected. Sometimes, he even pointed at the names he wanted and let me make the marks (yes, it was illegal, but so what?). I also remember one dark election evening when I was the tender age of seven, A friend and I hid at the entrance of the park where the neighborhood polling place was and shouted out competing election slogans at people walking past - nobody put us up to it; we did it for fun.
Don't denigrate children by gratuitously underestimating them all. Some of them are quite savvy.
Although there is quite a difference between demonstrating how voting works and putting your child in front of a famous political figure, on camera, egging them on to make a coached point they may or may not agree with, may or may not understand, but explicitly said they were uncomfortable making at the time.
Children aren't stupid, but they're also not campaign buttons.
We didn't win here...We lost big time....
These are right wing tactics and now they have a youtube clip to push into over face. ´'
"They can get married," Bachmann insisted. "They can marry a man if they’re a woman. Or they can marry a woman if they’re a man."
