Jonah Goldberg, editor-at-large of National Review Online, went on Fox News today to fan the flames of the latest fabricated "death panel" controversy.
Goldberg equated a Veterans Affairs pamphlet -- one that's reportedly no longer being used -- with Nazi eugenics, saying "death panels may not be too far off the horizon."
The pamphlet in question is one that, Fox reported this weekend, encourages disabled veterans to decide whether their lives are worth living. Tammy Duckworth, an assistant secretary of the VA, told Fox on Sunday that the department instructed VA doctors to stop using the pamphlet in 2007.
But Fox has ignored that insistence, saying soldiers returning from Iraq are given the pamphlet.
Dave N.: This really points out just how profoundly dishonest Jonah Goldberg is, just as he was with trying to deny that James Von Brunn was a right-wing extremist. These remarks are an outgrowth of his specious "Liberal Fascism" thesis, which since President Obama's election he has framed as the apotheosis of Obama's own fascist tendencies.
But as noted above, Tammy Duckworth has pointed out that the pamphlet in question was commissioned by the Bush administration, and discontinued in 2007. The Obama administration has had nothing to do with this.

Here we go again. I just got done saying on that Fox News video clip that this pamphlet, if one bothers to look at the first couple pages at the VA website is in the process of being revised and should be out soon the VA said. Everything Goldberg is saying could change tomorrow morning for all we know.
Next, I've filled out this questionaire and so have other former military members of my family. All it does is give various scenarios that every person could face later on in life. It goes into the different procedures for different medical situations and what happens if you decide not to have those prodedures. Furthermore, the pamphlet provides various ways for the veteran to decide at some later time if they choose how they would like their loved ones to handle thier situation if they happen to become incompaciated at some point.
There is nothing eugenic about it. I don't know about anyone else, but I for one would like to know that members of my family know of my wishes and what I would like for them to do if I happen to become incompaciated at some point. It sure beats the moment where I am incompacitated and cannot decide and a doctor asks my relatives: "What do you want done?" My relatives answer, "I don't know. Joe never said. Lets flip a coin."

I have written this countless times, and with the success of the Color of Change boycott of Mr. Glenn "cries more than Meryl Streep" Beck, I truly think it is about time we all got together and took real action. They know it's virtually impossible to read an entire book in the lifespan of a typical thread.
Even if something appeared in a book out of context it can mean the exact opposite. I remember reading a book called the Biological Time Bomb that predicted all kinds of things that could happen in science and technology, both utopia and dystopia. One could take the dystopic views out of context and say the writer was advocating the practice.

I am a fix-it kinda gal, and an optimist. As an activist, I tend toward pacifism in its purest form. I seek opportunities to talk with conservatives and others on the right, and I have noted a big increase in the number of people whose minds are closed to seeking solutions, whose world views are both pessimistic and fear-driven, and who think that carrying a gun to a town hall meeting is a fundamental right. Almost all of my attempts to dialogue with such individuals are frustrating and fruitless.
Since Bush sacrificed most of our National Guard to the illegal invasion of Iraq and the ongoing quagmire in Afghanistan, we will be pressed to defend ourselves when these zealots begin their revolt. I fear it's only a matter of time...
