Heather: Andrew Breitbart blames the victims and says the Congressmen who walked through the racist Tea Party members who were yelling racial epithets at them brought it on themselves and provoked the crowd, but denies anyone yelled anything you could consider racist at them if you can wrap your head around that one. He also is upping the ante with the payout for video of the spitting incident. The Huffington Post put up this video which apparently is not good enough for the right wingers to admit the incident happened. Now Breitbart says he's offering $100K for proof of the spitting, which I'm sure he'll never pay out later either. Everybody's a racist but the poor Tea Party protesters in Breitbart's world if you can stand to watch this rant of his.

While there may be some, I'm sure many tea party people are not racist and resent being called that. Being forced to defend themselves against this charge makes them resentful towards progressives and will continue the further division. Progressives should be very careful in lumping the whole tea party crowd as being racist. It's not right.
Also the right wingers love to defend themselves against this charge because it's a distraction from the real issues that America needs to unite on.
Instead I feel we should work together as much as we possibly can to combat financial reform to avoid another economic crash. Isn't this why the tea party started in the first place?
Wouldn't it be great to turn all that anger the tea party has towards the GOP when they try to defend the status quo of deregulation, which they will in the near future?

I'd like to believe that. That the the tea-baggers are out there to protect the little guy from political corruption, corporate welfare, massive debt, bail-outs for Wall Street fat-cats while the individual employee, investor and retiree gets screwed. Because God knows we need to be reminded about that and to be held accountable.
But here's why it's hard to believe:
1) Proximate Cause. They appear on the streets simultaneous with the election of the new president. OK, perhaps just coincidence.
2) They weren't and aren't protesting war spending as a wasteful, foolish squandering of lives of the little people and our national treasure. $100 Billion a year for health care? Wasteful! $200-300 Billion a year for foreign wars? Crickets.
3) Those signs. Obama as joker. Obama as Hitler. The Obama "O" sunrise logo as Hammer and Sickle. "Little Hussein" monkeys. Not just one or two, either. And the not distancing themselves by saying "whoa, man, we're here to protest runaway spending, not to accuse the President of being a Kenyan-born, secret Muslim, Fascist-Socialist (sic) psychopath!" This tells me -- more than anything -- that the tea-baggers are the party of "A Black Man cannot be a legitimate President", not the party of fiscal responsibility and restraint.
Breitbart got his butt handed to him by real journalist Brad Friedman. And that is the bottom line. James O'Keefe and those boys were part of some operation that got busted. Funny though the big guys up top helped them out avoiding felonies. WTF. Yet Breitbart is all over TV spitting his establishment propaganda. Enough to frustrate you once in a while. Good reporting.

of all these small rallies kind of interesting. I think that the MSM has now aired more hours of footage of tea party rallies than they aired of Obama rallies up to and including the inaguration.
The "big" searchlight event was supposedly 7000 people (although in videos it looks much smaller to this experienced campaigner) and it has gotten huge publicity and buzz. IIRC Obama had somewhere around 20,000 in Portland in the early days and it got no national coverage and barely any local media coverage. (The later one that had 100,000+ got some coverage -- if you want to see what a real movement looks like go here: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/u... Note that even the UK shaved the numbers.)
This was not an isolated event, I happened to go all over the country for these things and generally found that there was usually a bit of local coverage and at most a quick reference in the MSM with a shot of Obama against a bare stage. (They learned to have people standing behind him.)
I'm just saying.... but my wife and I followed the rallies and the media coverage fairly closely and I have not seen anything comparable to what all the networks are doing for this "tea party" movement. Obama certainly did not get the kind of advance billing from the networks that you see. The media was also very skeptical of OFA's numbers, the main reason that they had people sign in was so that they could tell the media how many people attended. It didn't help.
The main difference, though, is that when you went to an Obama rally you felt good afterwords. Going to the hate parties they are having now must make one feel like taking a shower the next morning.

Wouldn't it be great to turn all that anger the tea party has towards the GOP when they try to defend the status quo of deregulation, which they will in the near future?
And also if the tea party starts their own party and splinters the GOP wouldn't that be to our benefit as well? Instead of fighting tea party anger, we need to use that anger to our advantage.

Its a documented fact that many of the t-baggers are racists, homophobes, and generally violent and mean. It's on youtube, and Fox.
If there really are any sane and reasonable t-baggers amongst them, which I doubt, they should start their own political group. Maybe the "Soda Pops" or "Fruit Punches" or the "Beer Bellies".
The idiots with the Obama/Hitler, or Obama/Witch doctor signs are going to get all the attention, over moderates.
However I do think the moderates do need to do a way better job of condemning the crazies.
And it makes far more sense for all that anger in the Tea party to be focused on the GOP when they block all financial reform. Why confront that anger head on when it can be focused somewhere else? The more the tea party people know that the GOP are not their friends, but are using them, the better it will be for Obama, the Democrat party, and progressives.
It's a shame too many of my progressive brothers are unaware of this.

outside observation: It appears that the "teapartiers" are the "useful idiots" of the "republican party" just as many who visit this site are for the "democratic party". The one thing that both have in common is that you don't like it when it appears that the other side has control of the guns that are being pointed at you. If you paid a lot more attention to your commonality you would realize that you're the "useful idiots" of a "government" that has it's guns pointed at all of you.
I know its not as sexy as the term racist but most of these teabaggers are bigots not racists. The little old ladies with the Obama as the Joker signs usually have no power over people of color so are not technically racists.

I do not excuse my actions, which are indefensible. I have brought shame to the Tea Party Movement, which I value above all things. Though I know you can't trust me at this point, I am not a racist; I did grow up in the South, where many of my friends and I accepted the conventional wisdom about minorities, and at times I did use the usual racist language of that time and place, but honestly I do not discriminate against people based on race. It's no honorable consolation, I know, but I could well have spit on any Democrat passing by me on that day on the capitol steps.
But I did spit.
You can see me in the video. I'm wearing my Tea Party nametag and a hat from the Petry Ranch, which is a hunting ranch near my house in Huntsville. My wife is next to me (to her credit, she was asking me to calm down throughout the day.) If you check with the Capitol Police they will probably confirm that is me, because they ordered me back across the handrail several times and at one point an officer took my name and made it an official warning. I disrespected that man as well, I am afraid.
As the congressmen from the Black Caucus approach, I was chanting, and I lost control. I feel passionately about the questions the tea parties have raised, and I worry deeply about the course our nation is taking, and I lost control. Several representatives had already passed and most seemed to ignore us--this is part of the problem, of course, that we are ignored. When the next gentleman approached, I spit. It was not an accident; I gathered saliva in my mouth and spat it through my cupped hands. And I hit him on the shoulder and cheek.
As I said, I had intended to remain silent. But Andrew Breitbart has created a situation where I can come forward, and I thank him for that. Mr. Breitbart's honorable pledge shows how much we value our reputation, and how dedicated we are to repairing and improving the discourse in the US. Until there is a conscious effort to hold people accountable for their actions, we will never become honest with one another again. I can't possibly afford to make the kind of broad public gesture of reconciliation that is required, but Mr. Breitbart obviously can. Since he has offered the sacrifice of money, I can offer the sacrifice of accepting the dishonor I have earned. Together I hope we can put this issue to rest with a magnanimous gesture, and set an example for the rest of the nation.
Such actions have a cost. The Tea Party Movement understands that cost, and when we go too far, we should admit it and make amends so that our voices and issues can continue to resonate with clarity and honor.
So, Mr. Breitbart, I have done my part. The video is genuine, and it does show a congressman being spat upon. That entire article is riddled with hate for the President.
That article lists and names many who hate him vociferously.
Plus it's dated Dec 09. Which isn't that long ago. But with the signing of this HC bill. I would expect those numbers to spike. Especially with all the rhetoric recently.

Second, it's clear from the video that the intent of the "spitter" was not to spit on anyone but to scream at everyone. It's clear to me that in the process of screaming at these fine members of congress, the man inadvertently let some saliva fly and it hit Lewis in the face.
The answer to the question of whether or not the dude is a complete asshole is crystal clear. It is also clear to me that the man's intent was not to spit on anyone. Not to say it would be beneath the guy.

If it occurred, there is a police officer right there. Spitting is assault. Where is the arrest or at least the removal of the man for investigation.
I would think that simply by virtue of the Congressman's position, any statement about being physically attacked in any manner would prompt an immediate response from police, especially since it supposedly happened right in front of an officer.

All you have to do is look at who is booked to appear on the chat shows where the hosts allow the republican guests to lie and say whatever they choose on the public air waves with no followup questions or fact checking.
