Bill Donohue, the man who virulently defended Mel Gibson against charges of anti-Semitism for his The Jews Killed Jesus Movie (accusing the ADL, one of Gibson's critics, of "threatening to poison Jewish-Catholic relations") -- all this before that unfortunate DUI thing kind of put a dent in Donohue's claim that "Mel Gibson represents the mainstream of America" -- while himself indulging in theories about the Jews controlling Hollywood (on multiple occasions) and who has made a career out of rhetorical thuggery against anyone who stands up to him ...
That guy is actually comparing the nation's first African-American president to the country's most notorious white supremacist, a man who recently did prison time for ripping off his donors to feed his gambling addiction, and more recently has been traveling to faraway places to spread the Jew-bashing white-supremacist gospel.

Studies show that people tend to stick with the party affiliation they felt affinity for in their twenties. The Gen Xers (of which I am one) came of age in the Alex P. Keaton era. Reagan was God, greed was good and being Republican was rebelling against your hippie parents.
This was also when the Republican outreach reached their zenith, while Democrats demonstrated their malaise with Mondale and Dukakis.
It's instructive for us to look at that and how we rock the youth vote--it pays dividends for decades to come.
The Dems definitely do have a lot to work with our generation. The elders among us (like myself) can remember some of the difficulty of childhood under Reagan and Bush I, the much better situation under Clinton, and then of course during the Clusterf**k of Dubya's presidency we were more aware of the crap going on around us and a lot were willing to go to the polls to do something about it!
On a purely superficial level, it was obviously harder for us to relate to someone McCain's age. Obama on the other hand is in the comfortable position of being old enough to be GenYers' father, but young enough to understand us a little better.
