Hardball: Maybe David Broder Can Break It To Palin That She's Not Qualified?
h/t Heather for the video
I thought I'd heard it all from Chris Matthews. Hardball scores a coup, in my opinion, landing Michael Joseph Gross, the author of the article of the week, the slamming expose of Sarah Palin in Vanity Fair.
But Gross turns the conversation to a topic Matthews clearly doesn't want to discuss: Why are so many television shows giving attention to a person who has proven to be intellectually lazy, dishonest, and hypocritical? Because that question is first and foremost about Chris Matthews. No other pundit has set aside so completely Sarah Palin's complete lack of qualifications to hold public office. Chris Matthews wants Sarah Palin to win the GOP nomination, I assume because in addition to the tingle up his leg, it also improves ratings for his show.
So Matthews cuts Gross off and gives the floor to...Norah O'Donnell? Who wants to talk about how Palin "can be this celestial guide post in a time when most Americans think the country is headed in the wrong direction"?
Matthews concludes the segment by letting loose this odor of madness. No, I am not making this up:
MATTHEWS: Maybe we need David Broder to come back and really be strong, we need some gatekeepers again in this business.
And that, my friends, is when I fell off my chair. Maybe we need some gatekeepers? And you, Chris Matthews, are giving the job which FALLS TO YOU to David Broder?
I can't imagine Matthews hasn't read Broder's senility-confirming Paean to Palin from last February, given he harps on the same "common sense solutions" celebrated in that OpEd.
Mr. Matthews, I know you have nothing but disdain for bloggers. So let me address you as a fellow citizen of this country we both love: the closer Sarah Palin gets to the GOP nomination for President, the more damage she does not only to the nation, but specifically to the Republican Party. We on the Left cheer that on, but our partisanship comes at a cost to the nation of a balanced government with actual real debate on issues, a debate that leaves our country stronger. The GOP has been completely tossed to the fear-mongering White Trash and its charismatic hillbilly queen, a brain-lazy grifter who has NO answers to the problems that face this country. She doesn't even think about them. And when you, Chris Matthews, sacrifice your responsibility as a journalist to the cheering on of a Palin candidacy for the sake of ratings, you are a traitor to our country and the political process you claim to appreciate.
Transcript via Roll Call below the fold:
MATTHEWS: At what point does that become not use -- not even -- well, even ludicrous when you`re asked a question about how are you going to deal with the Middle East peace problems, how are you going to deal with nuclear technology around the world, what`s a common sense solution when there are no common sense solution? It takes a lot of ingenuity to figure out what to do with these problems. When will the voters say, enough of this common sense line of yours, what`s the answer?
GROSS: Well, I feel like we should have reached that point a long time ago. The question has as much to do with when those of us who are sitting in these chairs and looking in these cameras are going to stop giving her the attention that feeds this fire. She`s proven that she is a person for whom there is no matter to small to lie about.
MATTHEWS: OK.
GROSS: There is no distinction between fact and fiction in what she talks.
MATTHEWS: We`ll see how your piece runs.
Norah, your thoughts. You`ve been through the piece, you`ve covered her. How do you react to the piece you read by Michael in the "Vanity Fair" edition coming out?
O`DONNELL: Well, I think it`s fascinating and it captures really what is the sort of complex person that Sarah Palin is. And that Palin brand is exactly what makes her so marketable -- why she can sell 2 million books and why people come out in droves to see her.
I also think what`s fascinating is her use of the North Star.
MATTHEWS: Yes. I know that.
O`DONNELL: I mean, that is a great narrative -- good presidential campaigns need a narrative. She can be this celestial guide post in a time when most Americans --
MATTHEWS: OK.
O`DONNELL: -- think the country is headed in the wrong direction. And that can be a powerful narrative. But she`s got to work on the substance.
MATTHEWS: Maybe we need David Broder to come back and really be strong, we need some gatekeepers again in this business.

I would never, NEVER even think to call Palin "complex," let alone utter those words on national teevee.
A simpler, money grubbing, yes, "grifter" is the correct word, has never plagued the national stage.
Anyone who can't see Palin for what she is -- uninformed, sloppy, lazy and thin-skinned -- is blind. And anyone who believes Palin will ever submit herself again to the scrutiny of running for public office is naive -- as it stands, she's making money hand over fist without doing anything more than (i) leaving silly messages on Facebook and Twitter, and (ii) making the occasional appearance of Fox to respond to softball questions. Her goal has always been to be on television, albeit as a sports reporter, and she's now on television all the time, where she doesn't have to prepare, much less submit herself to reporters asking questions she hasn't screened in advance.
In short, she's content to remain the darling of the uninformed among us. Why Matthews and others believe she's a serious candidate is beyond me.
tweety needs to get a rubber and put it over his head

Neither was Bush. After eight years of on-the-job training, he still isn't.
Didn't stop him though.
If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.
(Bush) though. Exactly.
i don't care for obama, although i voted for him, he governs too far to the right.
but to say what you just did is to deny his obvious intelligence, charisma, and presence.

I have been listening to Matthews on this for a few weeks. I think Matthews wants Palin to run because he thinks that when Americans are in the privacy of the voting booth, they will not be able to tap that icon for Palin because everyone knows she is way out of her depth. Palin running means a sure victory for whoever runs against her.
with waaaayyyyy too much intelligence. It's just that tingle up his leg that's motivating him. Why do you think they only show him from the waist up?

these talking heads, they spout conventional inside the beltway bullshit.
the "north star" probably refers to the apostolic networks belief that alaska is to be a refuge for believers after the apocalypse precipitated by bible based support for israel.
but no, they don't dare criticize her on religious grounds, that being the sacred cow of american politics, so they put out this "not qualified" meme, not to say that she is; but she doesn't have to be qualified, she just has to get the votes.
saint ronnie wasn't qualified, neither was bush, and i have my doubts about our peace prize president; but none of this matters, what matters is who these people have behind them, more than votes, more than anything.
sister sarah is on a mission from god, she is in the throes of religious ecstasy, and probably will be for the rest of her life; to face reality would shatter her psyche.
Sarah may be a bankable "product," But so is a Big Mac. I would vote for the "Mac-ster" before Sarah. at least youd get some meat. Not just an empty bun.
Focusing now on sarah's buns?

Is it possible for a president to govern a country via facebook and Twitter? If Quitin' Sarah ever reaches the oval office I guess we'll find out.
Matthews runs his show whichever way the wind blows. No one is taking Palin seriously except Beck and the tea party jokers. I don't know if Chris has a crush on Palin or if he is envious of her.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

Leave it to Norah O'Donnell to button it up with the inane "Palin has to work on the substance." You haven't been listening, Norah. There is no there there.
And the Vanity Fair writer eerily looks and speaks like John McCain.
did O'Donnell just call her complex and a celestial guidepost? WTF ever happened to O'Donnell? So Palin's like George Santayana?
More like a misspelled signpost.

shows giving attention to a person who has proven to be intellectually lazy, dishonest, and hypocritical? "
Why do we? That's not a criticism by the way. Personally I find Palin interesting in a clinical kind of way. Even if she wasn't and isn't important herself the fact that she resonates with so many people is a subject worthy of study. As Different Anonymous pointed out it is a bit of a stretch to call Palin complex. Complexity implies unpredictability and I doubt there are few people on the planet more predictable than Palin.

Why are so many television shows giving attention to a person who has proven to be intellectually lazy, dishonest, and hypocritical?
For the same reason why the "networks" put on stupidity reinforcing tripe like reality shows.
People watch.

I do believe you don't watch TV much these days....that's pretty much the default position of all stations................especially Faux Noise!
“The greatest evildoers are those who don’t remember because they have never given thought to the matter, and, without remembrance, nothing can hold them back,”
They need to maintain the distractions from the real issues of wars, economy, and bigotry. Sarah Palin was made for these folks. She's so ridiculously stupid, and yet they can actually call her "complex". It's like slowing down to see the results of a car crash.
I have yet to read Gross's article. And therein lies the rub. I already know enough about this pompous ass. Do I really want to read about her domestic issues without validating the attention given to her?
"Someday somebody related to some of these sufferers, these victims, these collaterally damaged souls, may try to kill you. And I have to tell you, I think you’ll have it coming." - Christopher Cooper
There's nothing in the article that represents new information.
We know who and what she is. It's more fluff, focusing on specific instances of her bad behavior, so as to tittilate rather than inform.
More mindless crap. The New Yorker should be ashamed.

I'm sure the part about having political aids handle her crusty undies got some interest from the wankers...........and I mean that quite literally.
Personally, I don't see why people find her interesting in any way shape or form.
stops to look at a car wreck....like Lady Gaga....although I'm certain Lady Gaga beats out Sarah in the IQ department by double digits.

I pretty much stopped watching Matthews over this constant viagra boner he has over Palin. Now I realize how annoying he was on everything else as well.
But let's just step back from this for a second. I think it is a good thing to keep Palin in the spotlight and having her on the GOP ticket in 2012 would be a god send for Dems IMHO.
tingle up his leg over the Bush "package", I knew he was nuts (no pun intended). I put him in the same category as Hannity....stupid and idiotic. I have no idea why MSNBC has him on....maybe they want to try to get SOME of the Faux Noise audience to watch. Ick!
“The greatest evildoers are those who don’t remember because they have never given thought to the matter, and, without remembrance, nothing can hold them back,”
Seriously...haven't you seen the polling numbers that say that 60% of GOPs want Palin to run and 100% of Dems do?
Palin winning the nomination will be the final nail in the GOP coffin, but it doesn't matter because she's not going to run. She's not going to make the same mistake Katharine Harris made by reaching that far.
More importantly, the whole world is about Palin, which is why she's not going to give up the money or the fame to run for a crappy job like President.

that anyone who wanted to be president ( of the universe) probably shouldn't be allowed to become president. Anyone contemplating taking on the only slightly less difficult job of US president ought to have spent a lot of time asking themselves not only if they want the job but are they up to it. What troubles me most about Palin is that I don't really think the second part of that question would ever occur to her. I think the only calculation she would make is: Can I win? She has a beauty pageant contestant's mentality. It is all about winning something, anything in fact, as if the win itself was the prize. I'm sure she would find the duties attendant with winning the highest office every bit as uninteresting as she clearly found her governorship. Why anyone would want to elect someone to that office whose only dream is one of endless photo ops is a bit of a puzzle.
Hasa Diga Eebowai
Running for Prez is the Mother Of All Beauty Pageants...
and she's really up for trying for the biggest prize of all...(Presidency)..think of the perks, the photos...the...photos....the ................photo ops........

Can you imagine Palin dealing with the White House Press Corp? Actually having to answer for her actions? She loves her life of freedom from critiques that comes with the controlled interactions of facebook, twitter, and the soft-ball interviews of Fox News. By all accounts she hates having to actually govern and loves the immense wealth that has come from her celebrity status.
She is going to hold on to her role as a money-making rabblerouser and kingmaker, free from actual responsibilities and consequences that come with a "real" job. She knows she can't win and how a loss (especially in the primaries) will hurt her reputation, nor does she want the scrutiny or responsibility of public office.
She's a grifter and a con-woman and she's going to ride that gravy train as long as she can. No way will she give up her millions in income to do actual work.
Its absolutely ridiculous to me that anyone, anywhere, thinks there is a possibility that she actually has any interest in serving the public.
wouldn't have any different time with her than that had with Bush...scripted sessions..everyone hold their hands up looking like it's not......
questions??????? Like what?
If president, who would be Palin's brain?
Technically, she is qualified in being over 35, an American citizen and/or natural born citizen and resident in America for fourteen years.
But right away as a country we turned to generals and lawyers.
Of course if you're a stickler for the exact details of the Constitution as the teabaggers claimed, you would have to pass an amendment to allow women to run, since in Article II they talk exclusively about the president as HE.

I nearly threw up in my mouth. Matthews seems to suffer from intellectual schizophernia. I remember a show he did a few months back where he trahed Palin and rightly so as not knowing anything and being incurious. This bullshit he spouted yesterday is more of his recent takes on that nitwit, which is clearly designed to spike his ratings. As for David Broder, he is a wash up joke who is well past his prime and clearly thinking with his nether regions when writing about this Leno chinned bimbo and so is Matthews. He slurps at the mention of this ignorant, waste of space. Give it up Chris! That bitch isn't coming on your show either!
She's not hot either.
She makes Paris Hilton seem hot, and I swear I could play xylophone on her spine and ribs.

I quit watching Matthews about 3 months ago. I got very tired of his interminable questions and his interrupting his guests with his thoughts about anything at all. I am quite sure that he would be happiest if he didn't have to share any of his time with anyone and was able to just expound on his thoughts for an hour.
Those two words describe Matthews. I quit watching a year ago, things are more peaceful without his useless, bipolar analysis of politics. Like the poster said he's a corporate stooge in it for the ratings, he massages public opinion with trash about Palin later to knock her down, again for ratings.
blugal: YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT !!! Tweety has turned into a 16-year old with raging hormones for the Swag-ette and it REALLY shows on the sir. And, to emphasis your point about turning away from Mr. Gross as he probably made the most salient point of the interview, that the Swag-ster has revealed herself as one that finds NOTHING to small to LIE about.. Tweety was angry with himself for letting that get thru - but it did...
Har..Har..Har... Hey Swaggie, LIKE THE TRUTH BEING PUBLIC !!! HA!
...but wasn't the post about Matthews' shutting down criticism of his own behavior. I mean he brought the guy on that wrote the most talked about piece of the week and gave him a couple sentences before turning to Norah (north star) O'Donnell ?? Then Matthews claims he needs Broder to come on and do his job for him.
Posters then went on random tangents from Palin talking to the Press Corps to Palin makes Paris Hilton look hot to how running for President is like a beauty pageant.
Maybe the real problem is that we can criticize the media but once the discussion starts we get distracted by shiny objects that have NOTHING to do with the topic at hand.

I find it so delightfully ironic that Democrats find Sarah Palin unqualified to be......anything. This from the folks that brought us President Barack Obama. What exactly, may I ask you, made him qualified? His one term as Senator? At least Palin had managed something, in this case the State of Alaska. Oh of course he was handsome and intelligent and well spoken. I guess thats all one requires to be qualified in this era of hope and change.
And then there were the notes written on her hand during a speech some time back. How, pray tell, is this not exacltly equivalent to Obamas continual use of the teleprompter? Even at a speech he gave in front of some 3d graders?
Frankly, and having spoken in public before, I have much greater respect for someone that can speak of the cuff, at is were, with just some notes on her hand, than one that must rely on the teleprompter for everything that he says.
EVERYONE. Bush had a tough time reading his, because he's nearly illiterate, but he had one. McCain used a teleprompter. Your newsreaders use a teleprompter, every night.
St Ronnie used one, Bush Sr, Eisenhower, they ALL USED TELEPROMPTERS. It's a modern day piece of equipment that all speech making politicians use when available to them.
When are you humps going to get off the "Obama uses a teleprompter" whinge, huh? Tell me. In case it hasn't sunken in, it's not a rarity.
Actually, PALIN USES A TELEPROMPTER. It's that clear piece of glass off to her left in this picture and the piece of glass reflecting McCain's face in this picture.
You said: "I have much greater respect for someone that can speak of the cuff, at is were, with just some notes on her hand, than one that must rely on the teleprompter for everything that he says." I guess your deep abiding respect for Ms Palin and her extemporaneous ways is very misplaced. More here.
Palin was trying to HIDE the fact she was using her palm as a cheat sheet. It was dishonest. And the 'facts' she wrote down-not 'facts' at all, but mistakes. No one would have said shit if she'd brought out cards or a sheaf of papers to keep facts and figures straight.
Big diff there, between openly using an aid, and trying to sneak something in. But I don't expect Palin supporters to know much about ethics.
me-oww!
