We can chalk up Jay Ashcroft, Missouri’s secretary of state and 2024 gubernatorial candidate as another Republican putting MAGA fascism over democracy and country.

NBC News reported on Ashcroft's retaliatory poutrage over Colorado and Maine ruling that Donald Trump is disqualified from running for president again:

"What has happened in Colorado & Maine is disgraceful & undermines our republic," Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft wrote on the social media site X on Friday. "While I expect the Supreme Court to overturn this, if not, Secretaries of State will step in & ensure the new legal standard for @realDonaldTrump applies equally to @JoeBiden!"

Never mind that President Joe Biden did not try to overthrow an election or incite an insurrection. Ashcroft is all in on drumming up a flimsy pretext.

Asked how he would disqualify Biden from the ballot for insurrection, Ashcroft said that he's "let an invasion unstopped into our country from the border." Vice President Kamala Harris, he added, "supported people that were rebelling against the U.S. government during the riots in 2020," referring to racial justice protests in the wake of George Floyd's murder.

"If this is the standard, does that suddenly mean she's not allowed to run? None of us can say, because there is no standard," he said.

Actually, there is clearly a standard in the 14th Amendment. That standard disqualifies someone who has “engaged in insurrection or rebellion against” the U.S. or its Constitution, “or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.”

Surely Ashcroft, a lawyer like his torture-endorsing father, knows that neither Biden nor Harris have exhibited anything close to the kind of anti-American behavior Trump has. Besides trying to overturn a democratic election and inciting an insurrection, he publicly sided with Russia over the U.S., took millions from foreign governments, mostly China, while he was in the White House and there’s credible evidence he stole and mishandled top secret documents.

But to people like Ashcroft, siding with the MAGA tribe is more important than siding with the U.S. Constitution.
