Wisconsin Hit By The Biggest, Bluest Wave Ever

It's been a long time coming, but a new day and a new hope has risen on the State of Wisconsin and on America.

After the Republicans and their dark money special interest backers threw everything they could at her, Janet Protasiewicz won the race for the Wisconsin Supreme Court. And she won in a big way with an 11% lead, or about 200,000 votes.

This is a major ground shift for Wisconsin, where the Republicans had control of the state supreme court for the past 15 years. With progressives now with the majority, a lot of bad could become undone. A list of things that could be brought before the court in the next several years include:

  • The complete ban on abortion with no exceptions
  • The gerrymandered districting maps which in turn would lead to fair elections
  • Act 10 and Right To Work laws
  • Voter rights, including photo ID and the use of drop boxes

Another issue that is sure to come up are the rules about the 2024 election, including challenges to the election results, like we had seen in 2020.

Progressives won several smaller elections for judges and school boards. Notable is that Sara Geenen who ousted Bill Brash for the District 1 Appellate Court. It's notable because it was Geenen's first election and she ousted Brash, a Scott Walker appointee, by a 2:1 ratio.

To paraphrase Protasiewicz in her acceptance speech, Wisconsin's state motto is "Forward." Now, after all these years, we can start living up to that again.
