In the wake of the nuclear disaster in Japan and the BP oil gusher in the Gulf, Stephen Colbert points out how the time right after an environmental catastrophe is obviously never the time to take a look at what we should do to make sure we don't have another environmental catastrophe.

COLBERT: Exactly. Right after a major environmental catastrophe is not the time to prevent a future environmental catastrophe and luckily, McConnell is not alone.

Cut to the other dozens of talking heads repeating the same talking points that were sent to them at the same time as old Mitch received his. To which Stephen responded:

COLBERT: No, we have to love our energy sources equally. They're like our children. Now our emotions, folks, our emotions are running too high right now. Right now we're like a wife walking in on her husband banging his secretary from a coffee table. Our immediate reaction were to do something rash like demand a divorce. We... we just need to stay calm and keep breathing. And... we somehow need to find the courage to do nothing, just like after the BP oil spill. Some wanted to ban offshore drilling. Thankfully, oilier heads prevailed.

[...]

But folks, the point is, whenever... whenever something happens, only in the far, far distant future will we receive the calm perspective to say, "Why are we worried about this, it hasn't happened in years?"

Stephen is quite sure in about 10,000 years after some of the nuclear fallout areas are safe to be around again in Japan, McConnell will be happy to reserve a hearing room on the topic.
