The St. Joseph School Board lost a real opportunity when voters did not see fit to elect an insurrectionist to give that all-important perspective of someone willing to attack the U.S. Capitol.

Kimberly Dragoo, who pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in connection with the Jan. 6 attack, lost her race Tuesday for a seat on the St. Joseph Board of Education in Missouri.

Dragoo participated in the riot with her husband, Steven, who photographed the couple throughout the day, including when she went through a broken window into the Capitol, according to court documents. She was one of 10 candidates running for three open seats for a board that oversees 10,000 students and 1,500 staff members, per the district’s website. She came in eighth out of 10 candidates.

There were a few eyebrows raised when Kimberly Dragoo put her name forward last December, what with participating in an attack on the U.S. Government and all, but since she and her husband were only charged with misdemeanors it was judged all hunky dory.

Recent filings for the St. Joseph School District Board of Education have raised some questions in the community about candidate eligibility.

Missouri law bans previously convicted felons from being elected to a school board, but not those guilty of only one misdemeanor, a legal expert said. The topic arises from the Tuesday filing by Kim Dragoo as a St. Joseph Board of Education candidate. She is one of 10 registered to compete for three open seats on April 2. Candidate filings are now closed.

There have been claims that Dragoo will not be eligible to serve based on her August 2023 plea of guilty to parading, demonstrating or picketing in the U.S. Capitol, a misdemeanor. Dragoo did that with her husband, Steven, on Jan. 6, 2021, during the Stop the Steal rally organized by then-President Donald Trump, which gave rise to a riot.

Kim and her husband Steven were kindly given three more months back in January before sentencing after their guilty pleas way back in August, 2023. If they had gotten prison time back then that may have made the school board election somewhat problematic.

A local couple convicted in the Jan. 6, 2021, incident at the U.S. Capitol won’t be sentenced on the schedule previously planned.

Federal prosecutors have agreed to give Kim and Steven Dragoo three more months before they are to appear on April 12 before Judge Beryl Howell of the District of Columbia District Court.

Some history of the Dragoos.
