As a Florida school deals with a growing measles outbreak, the whack job surgeon general is basically making shit up to fabricate a policy that leaves unvaccinated children at risk of contracting one of the most contagious pathogens on Earth. Floriduh! Via the Washington Post:

Florida surgeon general Joseph A. Ladapo failed to urge parents to vaccinate their children or keep unvaccinated students home from school as a precaution in a letter to parents at the Fort Lauderdale-area school this week following six confirmed measles cases.

Instead of following what he acknowledged was the “normal” recommendation that parents keep unvaccinated children home for up to 21 days — the incubation period for measles — Ladapo said the state health department “is deferring to parents or guardians to make decisions about school attendance.”

Yeah, we've seen how that works out.

The controversial move by Ladapo follows a pattern of bucking public health norms, particularly when it comes to vaccines. Last month, he called for halting the use of mRNA coronavirus vaccines, in a move decried by the public health community.

Ben Hoffman, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics, said Florida’s guidance flies in the face of long-standing and widely accepted public health guidance for measles, which can result in severe complications, including death.

“It runs counter to everything I have ever heard and everything that I have read,” Hoffman said. “It runs counter to our policy. It runs counter to what the [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] would recommend.”

Let's talk about measles. Until we got this wave of paranoid parents refusing vaccines for their kids, we didn't have to worry about measles. And now we have to do it all over again, because it causes things like croup and pneumonia. But wait, there's more!

Measles keratoconjunctivitis occurs mostly in children with vitamin A deficiency and can lead to blindness. Central nervous system complications include acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), measles inclusion body encephalitis (MIBE), and subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE).[15] ADEM is an autoimmune demyelinating disease that occurs within days to weeks.[16] MIBE is thought to be a progressive brain infection in patients with impaired cellular immunity occurring within months of the initial infection. SSPE is a progressive neurological disease that presents 5 to 10 years after the acute illness and is thought to be caused by an abnormal host response to the production of mutated virions.[17] It occurs mostly among children that developed measles before 2 years of age and manifest with seizures and progressive loss of cognitive and motor function.

Now, what kind of "doctor" advises people to let their kids get measles? One appointed by Puddin' Fingers DeSantis, of course. One who makes a lucrative living talking to audiences of other whack jobs, and helps push religious exemptions for vaccines.

Dear sweet Jeebus.
