On tonight's episode of the Music Club, we have Shirley Bassey backed by Propellerheads, which is a strange, yet fittingly-styled group for her voice and performance style. What we have hear is a fusion Bassey's jazz-based pop style and fuses it with genres that were popular in the '90s, like trip hop and acid jazz, which actually sounds perfectly natural. You've got some big band revival horns, some electronic samples, and a hip hop beat all supporting a really dynamic singer, which is a very creative idea that yields a unique result. I'm not much of one for revival genres, as most of the bands that follow those trends tend to fall flat creatively (but do very well in Vegas). However, these guys, and Shirley, had the sense to take what was good about the old and mix it up with what was interesting about the new stuff.

Got any favorite fusions of older and newer styles?
