I met a strong and remarkable woman yesterday, Dr. Rita Ramirez-Dean from California's Inland Empire. She's going to run for Congress against a powerful and corrupt incumbent, Jerry Lewis. Rita told me what it was like growing up in a world where men-- and women-- would routinely tell a young girl that "only men" could do this or that. She graduated #1 in her class and her guidance counselor suggested she could be an elementary school teacher or a secretary. Rita is a little younger than Etta James, who we're featuring tonight at the Music Club. Rita's story inspired Lucas and I to put this together for you. It's a cover from 1999 of a song written and recorded by Alice Cooper, who sings it from a somewhat different perspective:
