Stephen Colbert had a field day with Rep. Steve King (R-Crazytown-IA) for his defense of dogfighting and animal cruelty that we wrote about here last week: Wingnut Rep. Steve King Defends Dog Fighting.

He also skewered him for his bizarre response over the dogfighting comments which Think Progress reported on here: Steve King Defends Dog Fighting Comments In Bizarre Diatribe:

Yesterday, ThinkProgress reported on Rep. Steve King’s (R-IA) comments that “there’s something wrong with” outlawing dogfighting when “people fighting” is legal. King has since tried to backtrack from the claim, arguing that while his words were “distorted,” he still believes that “we’ve crossed a moral line” by “elevating animals up to above that of humans.”

In explaining himself, King argues that animals have more rights than fetuses, and suggests that liberals have so devalued life, that a man can rape a young girl, kidnap her, force her to undergo an abortion across state lines, and then “drop her off at the swingset….and that’s not against the law in the United States of America.”

Colbert's response was laugh out loud funny:

COLBERT: What?! That's not against the law? Why not? Maybe Congressman King should do something about that. What? What? What? I'm being told that all of that is against the law? Well, bravo Congressman. Fast work. […]

I guess all Steve King is saying is we shouldn't judge him for having impregnated that dog and taking it across the border for a forced abortion to protect the world from his monstrous glassy-eyed man-puppies. Right?

That's got to be what he's saying, because otherwise, I can't figure out what the f**k he's talking about.

Neither can we Stephen. Neither can we.

After his defense of dogfighting last week, it seems the wingnut Rep. Steve King is getting some push back from his fellow Iowans.

From CREDO SuperPAC: Paws Against King & CREDO SuperPAC Protest Rep. King For His Defense of Animal Cruelty:

Protest Follows King's Comments Defending His Votes to Block Anti-Dogfighting Legislation

Ames, IA— Paws Against King and over a dozen CREDO SuperPAC volunteers protested outside of Rep. Steve King’s campaign office in Ames today to voice their concerns about King’s defense of animal cruelty. Local residents brought along their dogs and waved protest signs to demand that Rep. Steve King stop making excuses for dogfighting, and stop blocking efforts in Congress to crack down on animal abuse.

"No matter how King may try to justify his outrageous comments, the fact remains that he has repeatedly voted to defend animal cruelty,” said local pet owner Susan Brehm-Stecher. “There's no justification for voting to block legislation that could end the barbarism of dogfighting. If Steve King continues to defend animal cruelty, there's no doubt in my mind that animal lovers like me will ensure his defeat in November."

Just this week, Rep. King made national news after defending his efforts to defeat an amendment that would have made it a crime for an individual to attend or bring a child to a dogfight. According to the Humane Society, “There’s no federal lawmaker who has worked harder to thwart the enactment of anti-dogfighting legislation than Steve King.”

Rep. King is being targeted by the CREDO SuperPAC’s “Take Down the Tea Party Ten” campaign because he champions extremist Tea Party values on a variety of issues, including his repeated attempts to block common sense solutions to crack down on dogfighting.

CREDO SuperPAC is not your average SuperPAC. Instead of spending millions on TV advertising, CREDO SuperPAC has hired four full time organizers, has an office in Ames, and is partnering with local constituents in Rep. King’s district to mobilize voters and spread the word about the radical policies championed by Rep. King.

Here's to wishing them the best of luck with their efforts.

Wingnut Rep. Steve King Defends Dog Fighting

As if there weren't enough reasons to dislike one of the most extreme wingnuts in the United States Congress, we can add one more to the list with Rep. Steve King: GOP Rep. Steve King Defends Dog Fighting:

If you believe that the United States should legalize dogfighting because we allow humans to fight, fear not. You’ve got an ally in the United States Congress.

During a tele-townhall late last week, Rep. Steve King (R-IA) fielded a question about his opposition to animal rights and recently introduced legislation that would undermine local standards preventing animal torture. “It’s wrong to rate animals above human beings,” he told the questioner. To make his point, King argued that “there’s something wrong” for society to make it a “federal crime to watch animals fight” but “it’s not a federal crime to induce somebody to watch people fighting.”

KING: When the legislation that passed in the farm bill that says that it’s a federal crime to watch animals fight or to induce someone else to watch an animal fight but it’s not a federal crime to induce somebody to watch people fighting, there’s something wrong with the priorities of people that think like that.

As Scott Keyes noted in his post at Think Progress, that's a ridiculous analogy, since humans have a choice as to whether they're going to participate in a fight. The same cannot be said for animals and as he pointed out, you don't have humans regularly being executed after they lose a fight, which often happens in dogfighting. They also pointed out King's atrocious record on animal cruelty, which I was not aware of before reading their post, but am sorry to say I'm not shocked by at all.
