Maher: And finally if America can't get off its back and get something done it must lose the bald eagle as our symbol and replace it with the You Tube video of the puppy that can't get up. As long as we're pathetic, we might as well act like it's cute.

Bill O'Reilly likes to use Bill Maher as a symbol of the "far left," though in reality Maher is only definably "left" if by that you mean "not a movement conservative". Still, O'Reilly on his Fox News show last night couldn't resist using Maher's insistence that Americans are "stupid" as proof positive of his own favorite narrative -- that "the left" loves to look down their noses at ordinary, working-class Americans.

His proof of this: The disparate way that liberals treat Sarah Palin and Deval Patrick. While liberal icon Patrick has struggled to get Massachusetts' massive economic problems under control, Palin, he argues, has been a smashing success as Alaska's governor:

Gov. Palin is obviously a fuse on this. The left despises her. But the truth is the governor did a pretty good job in Alaska. Her approval rating when she left office was 54 percent, despite spending a lot of time outside the state. Mrs. Palin is portrayed by the left as dumb, but how does that square with her solid performance in office? No, she did not study at an Ivy League college, graduating from the University of Idaho. But again, she did the job she was elected to do.

Oh, really? Quitting two and a half years into a four-year term is "doing the job she was elected to do"? On what planet?

Why, Planet O'Reilly -- one of the moons of Planet Wingnuttia -- of course. It's a planet made of falafel, festooned with loofah trees, and populated by nubile blonde bimbettes who wanna do threesomes with Bill. And from this planet one can get a clear view of venal liberals who see everyone else as "stupid."

O'Reilly invited Marc Lamont Hill and Naomi Wolf onto the show to discuss it, and both actually did a credible job of responding. (My favorite moment came when the two of them begin having a direct conversation uncontrolled by O'Reilly, who nearly explodes in apoplexy at being sidelined.) And Wolf gets it exactly right:

Wolf: I think that what is important is to go back the Founders and think, well, what -- when Jefferson was imagining that the people were going to run this Republic, he imagined that it would be ordinary people but they would be educated, that they would have --

O'Reilly: Sarah Palin's educated, she has a University of Idaho degree.

Wolf: Well, Sarah Palin -- there is a fascinating clip that went viral on YouTube that showed Katie Couric asking her, well what kind of magazines and newspapers do you actually read? And she couldn't answer the question.

O'Reilly: Well, what does that mean?

Wolf: So I don't think a smart American cares if the leader of the nation went to the University of Idaho or to Harvard or Yale, or just graduated from high school. I think we the people care that our leaders know what's going on in the world and are making sensible decisions on our behalf.

Now, for what it's worth, your humble editor is also a graduate of the University of Idaho. Obviously I don't think Sarah Palin is "stupid" for having a degree from a lesser school. However, I don't think she's qualified to be president -- not because she has a UI degree, but because she's demonstrated clearly a lack of the requisite intellectual capacity. That has nothing to do with where she comes from, and everything to do with what she has said and done.

Incidentally, that 54 percent approval rating among Alaskans for Palin that O'Reilly cites is not the positive thing he thinks: It actually represents a 30-point drop in approval over the course of a single year.

I saw Bill Maher offer Matt Taibbi some pushback last night about his Rolling Stone piece on Goldman Sachs. Maher wasn't willing to believe that Goldman has been uniquely positioned to profit from the breakdown of the financial system and the various bubbles created. Maher offered the predictable "why just Goldman" response, and Taibbi decided to talk about the many Goldman officials in high positions in the government. He could have just pointed to this story that leaped from Zero Hedge to the New York Times yesterday.

It is the hot new thing on Wall Street, a way for a handful of traders to master the stock market, peek at investors’ orders and, critics say, even subtly manipulate share prices.

It is called high-frequency trading — and it is suddenly one of the most talked-about and mysterious forces in the markets [...]

Nearly everyone on Wall Street is wondering how hedge funds and large banks like Goldman Sachs are making so much money so soon after the financial system nearly collapsed. High-frequency trading is one answer.

And when a former Goldman Sachs programmer was accused this month of stealing secret computer codes — software that a federal prosecutor said could “manipulate markets in unfair ways” — it only added to the mystery. Goldman acknowledges that it profits from high-frequency trading, but disputes that it has an unfair advantage.

Yet high-frequency specialists clearly have an edge over typical traders, let alone ordinary investors. The Securities and Exchange Commission says it is examining certain aspects of the strategy.

“This is where all the money is getting made,” said William H. Donaldson, former chairman and chief executive of the New York Stock Exchange and today an adviser to a big hedge fund. “If an individual investor doesn’t have the means to keep up, they’re at a huge disadvantage.”

They literally place their super-fast computers physically close to the machines that govern NYSE trades, to get the jump on competitors and make enough pennies off of the brief ups and downs of stocks to rake in mounds of cash. And in some cases, investors can buy access to buy and sell order information on certain exchanges that can be used to make these quick orders. When Chuck Schumer is calling for an investigation of Wall Street, you know something has gone horribly wrong.

What do you know. It took Bill Maher cracking jokes on Hardball about Republican hypocrisy with their feigned outrage at the Sotomayor hearings to get Matthews to admit that his hero John McCain may have a bit of a "temperament" problem.

Matthews: I just love Lindsey Graham going after her today about anger management. And here's the guy who was the biggest supporter of John McCain, and he was, he wanted McCain to be President of the United States and he was wondering whether she might have a temperament problem. Did he ever check in with his number one hero on that point?

Maybe you should be asking yourself the same question, Chris. I don't ever remember you bringing up McCain's temper during his Presidential run.

From 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Brad Blakeman seems to be channeling a bit of Tucker Carlson's rhetoric with the 'Jon Stewart is not funny 'line, and he has the nerve to compare Stewart and Bill Maher to Glenn Beck. Last I checked, neither of them were insane liars who look like they've lost their damned mind on their shows and are running segments that would give most small children nightmares.

Shuster...I mean Rush Limbaugh it appears his ratings are up. Glenn Beck's ratings are through the roof. Glenn Beck was suggesting that the Obama administration is heading towards concentration camps with those Fema camps and he accuses the Obama administration of totalitarianism. Watch this: (clip)

Beck: We are a country that is headed towards socialism, totalitarianism beyond you're wildest imagination, I wanted to debunk these FEMA camps, I'm tired of hearing about them. I'm tired of hearing it. I wanted to debunk them....I can't debunk them

Shuster: I mean it's crazy isn't it?

Blakeman: It is, it's as crazy as Jon Stewart's crazy or Bill Maher's crazy on the left. These guys, you have a massive deception because you want to take people away from your horrid policies. You start attacking Rush Limbaugh---is not a member of our party...

Jon Stewart is a comedian...

The joke in this segment is your pathetic defense of Limbaugh and Beck as "entertainers". The only people these nut jobs entertain are the fringe elements of our society who still think George Bush was a great President and that Obama is a terrorist who has a fake birth certificate and is determined to destroy the country.

John Amato:

Blakeman never gives an example of Stewart's craziness. He just says so. I don't remember Stewart being a global warming denier or actually start crying on the set because he feels so bad for you because we're becoming socialists and communists as the camera does a close-up of his eyes while he weeps.

What Blakeman won't say is that Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck do speak for the Republican Party. They have huge platforms to promote their conservative propaganda and the GOP follows right along. John McCain's campaign ads were for the most part---a direct result from talking points he gathered from RushBo. and his company of little Limbaugh's which were then produced 36 hours later... And what's also important to note is that Beck's ratings are tied into that lunatic fringe which represent scary, militia type stuff that is only growing at an incredible pace on the right.
