Human excrement Newt Gingrich repeated his inflammatory rhetoric from over the weekend this morning for the Fox & Friends kids. From the New York Times:

Newt Gingrich, the former House Speaker, also condemned the proposed mosque and the President’s comments.

“There is nothing surprising in the president’s continued pandering to radical Islam,” he said. “What he said last night is untrue and in accurate. The fact is this is not about religious liberty.”

Mr. Gingrich said the proposed mosque would be a symbol of Muslim “triumphalism” and that building the mosque near the site of the Sept. 11 attacks “would be like putting a Nazi sign next to the Holocaust Museum.”

“It’s profoundly and terribly wrong,” he said.

I have wondered what would be an acceptable distance and why?

I mean a few blocks away is not ground zero per se. So if not a few blocks how about several, a handful or some other vague notion of what makes America a free nation like a mile?

(not giving an once of viability to their insane arguments just wonderin')

Oh, who cares. Their facts are all wrong. It's not a mosque but a community center (think of your local Jewish community center, with a pool, meeting rooms, etc.). It's two blocks away (and in New York, that means tall buildings will probably block any view of the center from Ground Zero, and vice versa). It's NOT sacred ground, but an old Burlington Coat Factory Building. And finally, Muslim worship services have been going on RIGHT AT THE PENTAGON before and since 9/11, when terrorists also attacked the Pentagon. No one says anything about that! Gee, why not? Is it because someone decided to make this a political football? These people say they are for the Constitution but only when it suits them. IOKIYAR, which goes with Newt's perennial hypocrisy.

Mike V.'s picture

Everything in lower Manhattan is near "Ground Zero". Below Canal Street, you can walk to the site from anywhere in the area in 5 minutes.
In the USA we believe in religious freedom for everyone. If we're going to prove to the world that we are truly the land of the free, then people should be able to build a church, or mosque or synagogue wherever they want. FWIW, I think all religions are silly, but there is no reason to connect all Muslims to the 9-11 attacks anymore than we should connect all Catholics with priests charged with abusing children. Newt Gingrich says, "there are no churches or synagogues in all of Saudi Arabia." Really, Newt? We're lowering the civil rights bar THAT much?

Well, any improvement in the perception of the US by the Muslim world has just been flushed right down the toilet.

BTW, I saw a devastating documentary about the horrendous birth defects in Iraqi babies thanks to all that DU those fine upstanding evangelical Christians blithely spread around.

On Beck's show just now he told his audience that the only person who can save our country from total disaster is god. Then he said they should "call him".

Newt also said the President is caving to radical Muslims. Even Joe Scarborough was disturbed by this insanity from Newt.

I think Newt is playing to the goof balls of the tea party. Just one more desperate old white man trying to hang on to some sort of notoriety and making a fool of himself as he does. He can join the ranks of others like himself, maybe John McCain is his model.

Pretty freakin' sad when the most intelligent information about this comes from Jon Stewart and Colbert. From one of them I learned there is a Mosque in New York City, that was built before the Trade Center was even built.

As his wives found out, Newt is just about Newt. He doesn't care if he tears this country apart. That is okay with him. I horrified a coworker who follows Fox (although he denied it and then continued to spout the Limbaugh/Beck/Boehner "wisdom" word for word) that people like Newt are evil and what they say is close to treason. If they really cared about our country they would try to bring people together not demonize the "other." But you know, if hatred can get them power it must be god's will.

Winski's picture

Unfortunately, Murdoch and Ailes and now Ms. Weymouth (WaPo) and MANY others are PAYING hate machines like Newt and beck and limberger and savage and the list goes on and on and on for them to continue to ramp up the volume on the hate, disgust, loathing, destruction, etc. of EVERYONE that disagrees with them in the slightest detail.

You have hit the nail on the head about Newt but it goes MUCH further than just him... ALL the hate merchants preach this garbage 25x7 and it never stops... the more extreme the better... they are pushing for an internal, physical struggle for what they perceive as 'their' country.. and if you aren't on their side - you're a target.

I think Newt and lots of others could learn something from Shirley Sherrod when it comes to tolerance. She said she had a choice. She could dislike white people since her father was murdered by one or she could realize that all people need help at times and she made it her mission to help them no matter their race.

We need to send the world Mrs. Sherrod's messaqe and perhaps as a result we would become an even better place.

The thing is that the campaign has not even started and Newt is the only one openly running. As you know it means nothing. I can't believe he will not be shot out of the water very fast. Remember also that Giuliani was favored too at this time of the race. We know how that worked for him.

CaliforniaMike's picture

He is the classic example of a person who has absolutely no shame. He will say or do whatever he wants, no matter how discordant it is to things he has said and done before.

He is completely and totally amoral.

CaliforniaMike blogs at All Voices and at his own blogs, http://www.mikerappaport.net/onevoice and at http://oneminutewithmike.blogspot.com.

He pretty much said it. He can do anything he wants. he can say anything he wants because it is him. He told wife #2... or was it wife #1??? It becomes so confusing.

Right. He basically said it doesn't matter what he does since what he says is like Jesus' sermon on the mount.

Yet another example of conservative = hypocrite.

Its truly reached the point where that should become a Law of Conservative Politics. If you are a conservative, you are a hypocrite. Have I yet, in more then 10 years, met or heard of a single conservative that doesn't have exceptions for their morals and beliefs when it involves their own team.

In this case, its all "Obama hates the constitution but we love it!!!" Except if the 14th admendment getting in the way of illegal immigrants. Or the 8/10 Bill of Rights admendments getting in the way of the Patriot Act. Or the 1st getting the way when it comes to Muslims. Suddenly then its an obstacle to be overcome. They love their various moral beliefs until they actually get challenged and then toss them without a thought.

Like Gingrich. With his bad example. Which, btw the, also would break the 1st admendment if occred here in the states. While I don't like the idea of a Naxi sign next to a Holcause Museum, if that occured on private property here in the states, my belief in the Constitution means that person has a right to hang a Nazi sign next to a Holocaust Museum. If you can't or refuse to understand why that is a legal right that should be supported even if don't like the message, you have no grounds to claim to love America or the Constitution.

Oh, really, Newt? I'm unaware of any law that would prevent neo-Nazis from doing virtually anything they want with property right next to the Holocaust Museum -- assuming they own the property.

It is a sign of how low the media have sunk that a person can make a statement like that and not be immediately ridiculed. Of course, since he's apparently making these comments to Steve Darcy and his fellow Fox morons, there is no reason to expect anything but bobblehead support for Newt.

Newt, go fuck yourself. You lose according to Godwin's Law, but I'll go a little further, just for a little perspective.

An American's complaint about a Muslim cultural center near ground zero would be like a Jewish person's complaint not about a Nazi cultural center near the Holocaust Museum, but a German cultural center near the Holocaust Museum.

Just imagine a Jewish group complaining that nothing German should ever appear near the Holocaust Museum or that German people shouldn't be allowed in the Holocaust Museum. No conversation would ensue about the rights of German individuals to build on their own property. Everyone would recognize the obvious: Not all Germans are Nazis.

and really don't practice as well or as often as your side. It's more of a reaction to the abuse suffered by the left at the hands of the right, mostly spearheaded by piece of shit Gingrich in 1993 with his 'Contract ON America'

also, if you read for comprehension, no one but you said newt compared Islam to Nazis. “would be like putting a Nazi sign next to the Holocaust Museum” is a direct quote from your hero, the cheating lying unethical bastard, and that's all that was said in the article.
