From Countdown Aug. 3, 2009, Keith's Special Comment on health care reform. Michael Moore wrote this today about the Special Comment:

It is nothing short of brilliant -- and if all of America were to hear what he is going to reveal tonight, we are certain the vast majority of Americans would be on the phone to their elected representative immediately, calling for an end to the private, for-profit, rip-off health insurance companies who have wrecked our country.

Olbermann writes:

Tonight I will present what I believe is the longest Special Comment I have ever aired, naming names and citing dollar amounts to call out the politicians -- Republicans and Democrats alike -- who are paid by the Health Care Monopolies to bring to life one of my favorite quotes, the observation of the Belgian essayist Maurice Maeterlinck...

Some of the highlights.

PBS pointed out that the health and insurance industries are spending more than a million, 400 thousand dollars a day, just to destroy the "public option" - the truly non-profit, wieldy, round-up and not round-down, government, from helping you pay your medical bills with about a billionth of the recklessness with which it is still paying Halliburton and its spinoffs to kill your kids.

And much of this money is going to, and through, Republicans. But that's the real point tonight. Not all of it is going through Republicans...

[.....]

Congressman Mike Ross of Arkansas.Leader of the Blue Dogs in the House. You're the guy demanding a guarantee that Reform won't add to the deficit. I'm guessing you forgot to demand that about, say, Iraq.
You're a Democrat, you say, Congressman?

You saw what Sandy Barham said? Sandy Barham is 62 years old, she's got a bad heart, and she's hoping her valves will hold together for three more years until Medicaid kicks in, because she can't afford insurance. Not just for herself, mind you. For her employees. She needs the public option. So do those six people who work at that restaurant of hers, Congressman Ross. And why should you give a crap?

Because Sandy Barham's restaurant is the Broadway Railroad Café, and it is at 123 West First Street North in Prescott, Arkansas.
Prescott, Arkansas, Congressman Ross.

Your home town. You are Sandy Barham's congressman. Hers, Sir. Not Blue Cross's and Blue Shield's, even if they do insure 75 percent of the state and they own you.

[.....]

I warn you all. You were not elected to create a Democratic majority.

You were elected to restore this country. You were not elected to serve the corporations and the trusts who the government has enabled for the last eight years.

You were elected to serve the people.

And if you fail to pass or support this legislation, the full wrath of the progressive and the moderate movements in this country will come down on your heads. Explain yourselves not to me, but to them.

They elected you, and in the blink of an eye, they will replace you.

If you will behave as if you are Republicans - as if you are the pro
stitutes of our system - you will be judged as such.

And you will lose not merely our respect. You will lose your jobs!

Every poll, every analysis, every vote, every region of this country supports health care reform, and the essential great leveling agent of a government-funded alternative to the unchecked duopoly of profiteering private insurance corporations.

...and journalism, or at least cable news, could use a dozen more like him.

Mr. Olbermann made a great speech. I saw I Claudius, the series on PBS a few times and Keith spoke in the style of Claudius when he got mad at the senators who might block his rise to power to Emperor appointed by the praetorian guard and would have to explain it to them! the praetorian guard.

Keith spoke the words, if the Blue Dogs block health care then they will have to explain it to them! the American people, today's praetorian guard of our country.

Please sign this health care petition demanding Rep. Mike Ross get HR 676 enacted into law. Why? Because Mike Ross only stands for election every 2 years but his friends at Tyson Food products in ARKANSAS can get a lot of pressure from people like you when you tell them, you refuse to buy their products until Mike Ross gets the entire conservative Democratic coalition to vote for HR676 and get it enacted into law!

http://www.change.org/actions/view/rep_mike_r...

and this one too, for HR 676 generally.

http://www.change.org/actions/view/i_demand_c...

...wouldn't that make the American People the Praetorian guard in that case? Sounds kinda like a Rethuglican talking point :)

He's Brian Blessed as Augustus.

"IS THERE ANYONE IN HERE WHO HAS NOT SLEPT WITH THE HEALTH INDUSTRY!!"

And here it is.

The scene with Claudius, that is.

Mr. Olbermann--we missed your strident, self-righteous, opinionated TRUTH-TELLING!!!!

Is anyone disagrees with you regardless of the cogency and truth of his argument, would that person also be strident, self-righteous and opinionated? Add me to your list.

I think this just may have been Keith's best and most powerful Special Comment. Spot on. (I also liked how earlier in Worst Persons, he totally debunked the NY Times piece about the "truce" between he & Bill-o.) SOOO glad to have Keith back! Truth to power!

because I was laughing so hard that I kept missing pieces.

Brilliant!!

Olbermann is one great friggin American!

Olbermann - back from vacation - on fire!

And just in case you've been wondering whether he's gonna stop going after Billo and Fixed Noise .. watch this:

Countdown - NYTimes, FOX on WPITW... Just watch it.

From all the net buzz I was afraid that KO had gone Democrat on us.

Me too! I am SO relieved that he's back, and that he is being true to his beliefs. Yay, Keith!

In case you missed Tom Tomorrow this week:

http://www.salon.com/comics/tomo/2009/07/28/t...

Thanks for the link! Tom Tomorrow should be on the front page, above the fold.

He's saying what I'm thinking. Go get 'em, Keith!!

These asshats were voted in and they sure-as-$hit can be voted OUT!! Can't wait until the people get angry enough to make these efftards listen to them.

And replace them with who? I'm afraid anyone new who believes in reform will be corrupted before the ballots are counted.

You're right, let's not even try. /snark

... we ought to elect him to the Senate and insure he arrives suitably attired: with a stout cane—the old boys in the Senate really do seem to be in love with the old traditions of their chamber.

to God's ear.

I think between him and Franken...they'd have the Senate on it's heels!

So glad Keith is back!

Slowly but surely, many of these repugs are getting emails from me.....I am especially furious with those who have said that Obama's plan will kill old people. I've said it once, and I'll say it again...there's a special place in hell for these jerks who are using fear to scare the elderly into protesting Obama's health plan.

It is up to us to make them pay.

:p

Amen to that, Brother!

we make for ourselves.

You must call them. They toss the emails in the trash. They don't like to read.

Great commentary ... the only way we are going to save this country from these corporations and the bankers including the Feds and the war mongers is if we fight them. Government has been taken over by these parasites. Unfortunately they have been very successful at separating us into camps and right and left. This is the genius of the controllers. What they fear most is a well informed and active population. This health care fight combined with the theft of our economy by the banking elite could bring us together. Each and every one of these elite corporations investors and owners must be exposed for agendas that harm the American people. We are seeing the truth behind their actions and they will pay for it.

We'd still be in the dark

...the great irony is that those who most need to need to hear this message and be stirred to action are precisely those who are least likely to be tuned into Keith Olbermann--and, in fact, are so brainwashed by Faux News that they think he's the enemy...

Even republicans should be listening to this man if they care about their health care. Outstanding comment! Glad to have KO back!

No mention of Olbermann refusing to critize O'Reilly and O'Reilly no longer exposing GE's connections with Iran to serve both corporate masters.

Thank you Keith. You are brilliant and a shining light in America.

Thank you!!!!!

Dear lord;

May the psychotic republicans and bluedog traitors spend ALL of Eternity in a waiting room, anxiously pining for their HMO to finish the required paperwork.

Thank You Lord.

and you could hear it in his voice, but have truer words ever been spoken? I think not.

Mr. Olbermann, do rock on.

I wish I could share his enthusiastic belief in the will of the people to smite these coprocephalic dicks, but unfortunately I've no longer any faith in it. I keep thinking THIS year we'll kick the bums out, but we never do. *sigh*

But it's good to hear SOMEBODY articulating another point of view in the MSM.

The audio for the flash & Quicktime versions of this Keith Special Comment are very low. I checked my system for settings in volume and everything was maxed out. Please check your encoder settings.

.

Look at Billy Tauzin, the Repug congressman from Louisiana who headed the House committee that regulated the pharmaceutical industry. Tauzin co-sponsored and helped shepherd the infamous "Medicare Part D" Big Pharma legislation that was "a give-away to the drugmakers because it prohibits the federal government from negotiating lower prices for medicines and continues a ban on importation of identical but lower-cost drugs from Canada and elsewhere. Tauzin warned importing drugs would expose Americans to the risk of tainted or bogus drugs."
So after Tauzin achieved this gargantuan giveaway to the pharma industry, he left Congress to become the very high-paid head of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, a powerful trade group.
As long as these crooks can leave office for an extremely high-paid job as a lobbyist or corporate stooge, losing their offices will be not a threat, but an enticement.

.

It's probably a bigger threat to the industries than to the elected officials.

If a Blue Dog is replaced by a progressive, who remains progressive after being elected, the industries have lost their shill.

Please sign this health care petition demanding Rep. Mike Ross get HR 676 enacted into law. Why? and this one too, for HR 676 generally.

http://www.change.org/actions/view/i_demand_c...

That appears ENOUGH.

The whole system is corrupted.

what he was saying. That stung all of em. One of his better efforts.

I sat in a negotiation room with a lawyer's paralegal recently and told her that I, and many others, are tired of getting ripped off and left with no resources to live our lives at a barely decent level and that they, who represented the credit card industry, were just as guilty as the shysters that they represent. And I told her that I now believed, and would support, violent revolution to over throw the corporate fascism that runs this country. That they had pushed us into a corner, and that now we would have to fight our way out, even if it meant taking out nice people like her in the process.

It made an impression on her. These people need to know that if they are going to continue to screw us, that they WILL suffer the consequences of their actions.

Thank you, Keith.

welcome back... sorely missed!

worst person was great! i knew better... (whew!)

Hope you still have a job come next week.

No matter what happens, every single one of the "Blue Dogs" must go. Defeat at the primary level must be guaranteed.

Message to Blue Dogs: You have betrayed your party and your constituents for corporate money. Your political careers are over.

progressives have real progressive voices. con-servatives have corporate voices disguised (and not that well i might add) as con-servative voices.

Spot on Keith. Spot on. I just wish this type of integrity would spread amongst mainstream media.

Good to see you back.

The time has come to name names, people need to know which of these men and women in Congress actually care for their constituents, and which do not. Those who oppose healthcare reform have not articulated a clear explanation that makes sense.

never lost faith in you. Sent the author of the times article my two cents about "efficient" if you know what I mean!

Theyr'e all sellin ad time, and I believe that Fox called out GE on it's dealings overseas and that KO was muzzled . . . given KO went after Fox, Murdoch, and O'Reilly tonite though . . . was it satire, mockery or a distraction from the muzzling?

I guess, I'll admit I just can't tell anymore . . . did the NYT get pawned, or try to pawn we the people?

Oh, wait.

Corporate Feudalism is a reality.

They own the media.

They control AND censor the media anytime they want.

Or we'd see more 'fair and balanced' info and expose's on corporate feudalism, their purchase of both media AND our elected offals . . .

And people who expose the bastards are never destroyed, killed in accidents, assassinated.

Gary Webb was NOT driven to suicide (or murdered).

The doc pegged by FBI for the anthrax letters was not set up.

Bush had NO knowledge of 9/11.

Kennedy, MLK, RFK were NOT taken out because they threatened the corporate feudalist status quo.

And We The People still have our votes to use to fight for our beliefs (think Supreme Court 2000).

Let's get another one, I'm thirsty and feel like talkin . . . Oh, let's talk Nixon, Reagan, too.

And 1953 post Dien Bien Phu, and the MIC . . .

WaPo Article from 1 Aug sez a NJ rep isn't convinced by the FBI's anthrax investgation. It's a shame Gary Webb's not here when we need him. Paging Mr Palast...

Joe Barton is from Texas, not Oklahoma as Olbermann said. I hate it when they make an obvious factual error, because then it throws everything else into doubt. How do we know those dollar amounts are correct, if they didn't even get the state right?

This issue is too important to lose credibility (and therefore possibly public opinion) over careless mistakes like this.

In one hour, Keith kicked the asses of: Repubs, Blue Dogs, FAUX, Bill-o, Tiger, the Health Insurance Industry, Glenn Beck, Rupert Murdoch, Michelle Malkin, and Richard Wolffe (by not having him on!). Keith, I know that you need and deserve a vacation from time to time, but thanks for coming back!

This is the do-or-die moment. For eight years we heard that the answer to all our problems was to elect more Democrats and, as a fervent anti-Republican, I hoped and still hope that this is the case.

But if in their rush to be "bi-partisan" and raise the number of Republican votes from zero to, uh, zero, they give us anything short of a robust public option, I'm done.

I've never voted for a Republican and I never will after watching Ronald Reagan corrupt this great republic.

But I'm not a sucker. Fool me once, can't get fooled again.

Either the Democratic Party is on our side or they are not. It doesn't matter if their opposition gleefully does that which they do semi-reluctantly.

Just because daddy is abusive doesn't mean mommy is worth a plug nickel.

So this is it, Dems. You pass this. You do the job we hired you to do, or you're over.

You and Olbermann are what I want to hear. From everyone, both those who vote Democratic and those who vote for the Republicans.

I'm solid with medical coverage, personally, but right now I am paying for a woman that I do not know personally but through her blog for her to go to Costa Rica, because she is too old to get a job and has no insurance. Good chance she has cancer.

Where did my country run off the tracks?

Before the last election cycle, the Republican's knew they were in a big pile of trouble; the plan to beat it, "Blue Dogs." Let's get some phony Democrat's elected, problem solved.

If only that were true.

Sadly, in the blink of an eye "you will be re-elected handily" is the lesson they've learned and why they feel free to do what they do.

Blue Dog Democrats?

More like Scum-Dog Millionaires.

I disagree with the disparaging comments on here. This action by the Blue Dogs is an attack on a central pillar of Obama's policy and I'm sure that not only will the entire Progressive wing of the Party remember this, bloggers and all, but so will the Party leadership. Having this kind of dissention in the ranks makes us look weak, just like the Republicans say we are. That's one thing I'll give the GOP, they're VERY monolithic.
The Blue Dogs WILL run for re-election. And somebody WILL remember to run a DECENT Democrat against them in the Primaries.

And Olbermann JUST ROCKS!!!

-Jay Randall, http://www.econocataclysm.com

Excellent way to call out the Blue Bitches.

... "I hates Republicans"!

"Republicans is so stupid."

It's put up or shut up. Fish or cut bait. Walk the talk. The Blue Dogs have just been called out. This needs to happen more...a lot more.

The prostitutes have finally been named for what they are: prostitutes.

I think there is going to be a bloodbath at the polls in 2010. The Bribe-o-crats are going to be in for a very rude surprise. In the interest of helping them find something they will be well-suited for, once they have had their careers in government "service" terminated by the voters, I offer them the following link:

http://mcdonalds.com/content/usa/work.html

Something entry level should do just fine....

Stage 2 of the revolution has started.

The repukes have wandered off into obscurity by their own idiocy.

Now the republicans in the democratic party are doing the same. They should have Howard Dean find some real democrats to crush these bastards in the primaries.

Once the bluedog republicans are gone, the corporate fascists will be out of luck.

As long as KO is on the air...they can only muzzle him so much...

If GE decides to pull the plug on MSNBC's current direction...he'll be sure to go down in a blaze of glory...

Keep it up Keith! You are our Murrow...

As Malcolm X always said, "Just tell the truth!" Expose these whores Keith. We must win this fight.

It's so frustrating when the health insurance industry profits and denies coverage to pre-existing conditions. It's like the health care system handed over to the private, profiteering sector has been going on since Nixon's taped conversation with Edgar Kaiser in 1971. Ironically, I have health care coverage with Kaiser-Permanente. It costs over $200 a month (which my folks are paying for), and I am due for dental treatment which will cost me $261 whenever I can accumulate enough money for that. As for the progressive movements that ask for money too in order to push health care reform, wouldn't it be easier if we just lent the politicians our voices by letters and phone calls?...It sure has been a long, long time since politicians put America and its people ahead of themselves. Thus, the politicians in Washington are losing it, and it wouldn't be surprising if many of them lost re-election. Scary thing about it is that if the republicans take control again in 2010, it would still not be a smart move because they are no better at all than the dems and the blue dog dems. The health insurance industry and politicians must stop making the excuse that reforming health care would be too expensive and add to the deficit. Obama's got to play it more progressively with more aggression to it. Lately I've been wondering if Obama is trying to listen to everyone, that in itself may be more of the same of the past 8 years under Bush and Cheney. Of course, for a long, long time the neoconservatives have had a lot of unconstitutional power and have aggressively gotten their way with their agenda of kleptocracy for themselves and their corporate cronies thereby putting the American people last with the much shorter end of the stick.

We are plagued by government for the corporation!
The entire republican party is part of the corporate empire, paid flunkies, liars, and fools. There is not one republican in the senate or congress that is a real American.
Not one single republican in either house will do any thing for the right reason. Only for the money! Nothing else matters to these people. The dollar bill is the end all for these republicans and the dogs that call themselves dems in name only.
republicanism is a mental illness!

I'd like to thank Keith Olbermann for speaking the truth like this. It was one thing to denounce a single corrupt presidential administration, but it is a far different and more dangerous thing to denounce an entire system of corruption.

Mr. Olbermann, you are a humanitarian and a hero.

Great piece KO,the Nazi Racist and DIM WITTED right are on the attack. The Indians have a saying it is a great day to die, how many Gutless, Spineless Anti American Right Wingers (nuts) will take up that challenge at a town hall meeting. Watch me get band again for calling out the GUTLESS, COWARDS of AMERICA. Sure scares the hell out of them with a direct confrontation. These Cowards don't even know the many faces of death ask the TRAITOR cheney, the COWARD bush the TRAITOR rove. I say bring it on you cowards. Again thanks KO.

Gotta love Keith and Rachel...I sent the e-mail below to both this morning, but Countdown's are bouncing.

Keith and Rachel:

I'm a big fan of you both. Keith, I was cheering you on last night watching you so intelligently and with just the right amount of well-expressed OUTRAGE, kick the livin' crap out of the corporate crooks and corrupt politicians that are responsible for the destruction of so many lives and careers.

I've been "fighting the good fight" down here in the Florida Panhandle (a/k/a "Redneckhandle") with little help or support from anyone, in spite of the fact that as a direct result of the very injustices of which you spoke last night, Keith, after spending many years and incurring hundreds of thousands of dollars in student loan debt preparing to teach in college, I discovered I was blackballed from employment due to my medical history and past insurance claims filed while an underpaid staff employee many years earlier, and am now forced to live on a meager Social Security Disability monthly income, food stamps, and Medicaid, as SSDI recipients are forced to wait two years and five months before being covered by Medicare. However, I currently have a case, in which I've had no choice but to represent myself Pro Se--and I'm writing a book entitled Pro Se Can You Plea, detailing my experiences with Clerks of Court offices, corrupt judges, et al., as well as a book entitled In the Absence of Justice detailing the multiple healthcare and employment injustices I've suffered over the past two decades, including the lack of assistance and unprofessionalism encountered when I requested assistance from politicians (Carol Tucker v. Chipola College) pending in the US Supreme Court, http://origin.www.supremecourtus.gov/docket/0..., as the Florida Supreme Court refused to hear the case based on either Discretionary OR Original Jurisdiction, because there's an unjust law in Florida that states if a District Court of Appeal issues a Per Curiam Affirmed decision (which of course the 1st DCA did), and refuses to write an Opinion (which of course they ALSO refused), the case automatically bypasses the FL Supreme Court, whereby the Petitioner's only recourse is to appeal to the US Supreme Court, who hear less than 1% of cases. It would REALLY help our cause to expose their violations that ruin the lives, careers, and health of so many unsuspecting citizens, if the US SC would hear as many of these cases as we can get them to hear. When our executive and legislative branches of government fail, the only remaining recourse for Americans is the judiciary--and when the judiciary is corrupt--where are we then--and they are, as I have sadly discovered, as corrupt--if not more--than the legislative and executive branches of government--particularly at the (red) state level.

Insurance companies, "risk managers," and "general counsels" have been deliberately and premeditatively violating Federal EEOC "perceived disability" laws for YEARS, in that they are--not-so-secretly as it turns out--discriminating against and blackballing past, current, and prospective employees based on their past health insurance claims/medical history, which are HIPAA, as well as EEOC violations. The State of Florida, most likely the Dept. of Management Services/Dept. of Financial Services (whose "queen," Alex Sink is running for governor), in cahoots with Blue Cross/Blue Shield, as State employees are covered under the Blue Cross/Blue Shield State of Florida "SELF-INSURED" Plan--meaning all claims are paid out of State of Florida coffers--so of course, just like any other "insurance company," the State of Florida secretly "weeds out" as many "sick" employees as it thinks it can get away with (now would be an ideal time for a State of Florida and/or Blue Cross/Blue Shield "whistleblower" to "crawl out of the woodwork"). And I still have in my possession an illegal medical questionnaire which was given to me to complete--which I refused--by Barry University in 2006.

In addition, Keith, prior to SSDI and Medicaid approval, I was approved for Sacred Heart Hospital's (Ascension Health) and Sacred Heart Medical Group's Uncompensated Care Programs, until shortly before my SSDI & Medicaid approval, they refused to renew my application to the program, though I still qualified, and began scheduling me for diagnostic tests, deliberately lying to me and stating that the tests would be covered under the Uncompensated Care Program under which I'd already been approved, as they knew I would NOT have the tests unless they were covered under the UCP, after which they billed me anyway, the reason for which I discovered is because once balances are written off to charity, they cannot later be billed to Medicaid, and they are allowed to bill Medicaid for unpaid balances up to one year. I immediately switched my healthcare to another local hospital's patient financial assistance program (if SHH had only kept their mouths shut and their "noses clean" for a few more weeks, they could have benefitted from my future Medicaid and Medicare dollars), and immediately reported the scam to my local office of Medicaid Fraud in Pensacola--who did absolutely NOTHING--and a year later, Cardiology Associates, one of the entities involved, acquired my Medicaid number and billed Medicaid--who actually PAID them, though Medicaid is not supposed to pay claims over a year old (OOPS). As you can probably guess, Bill McCollum, who is also running for governor, and runs around Florida proclaiming how much he does to prevent Medicaid fraud, refuses to respond, the US Dept. of Justice, refuses to respond (the US DOJ Inspector General has deleted e-mails from me without reading them), the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions refuses to respond, Kathleen Sebelius refuses to respond...I'm sure you get the picture, Keith. I have filed legal action in Escambia County Circuit Court against Sacred Heart Hospital, Sacred Heart Medical Group, Ascension Health (who has managed to avoid service of process thus far), Cardiology Associates, and Pensacola Sleep Disorders (who are holding my medical records "hostage"), http://public.escambiaclerk.com/xml/xml.asp?u..., and while you're at it, check out McCollum's campaign contributions, http://election.dos.state.fl.us/cgi-bin/contr..., especially the WellCare contributions he's received, and Sink's, as well, http://election.dos.state.fl.us/cgi-bin/contr.... You are absolutely right, Keith, both parties are at fault and completely corrupt.

Months ago, Keith, I submitted an application for Citizen Membership to the Florida Justice Association, http://www.floridajusticeassociation.org/file..., who never responded. I called and was told someone would return my call, which never happened. I then sent e-mails to the Executive Committee members (all white guys), who claim to be "reviewing" my application, which asks for nothing more than basic identity information...I smell another discrimination suit on the horizon, Keith...speaking of blackballing.

Keith, injustices such as mine MUST be exposed. I am only one person, and not in the greatest of health as it is (though thankfully not the worst), and the corruption in these cases will continue unless it is exposed and all perpetrators held accountable. To be clear, I am NOT seeking media attention, I do not crave that at all. What is important here is that what has happened to me, and is still happening to me, the outcome of which, if justice is not served, will continue happening to other citizens, as well, if the truth is not revealed. Please help justice be served, Keith.

Another great Special Comment from Keith. "So much for..." all of those turncoat Dems who vote down on meaningful health insurance reform. A public option component must be included within this legislation. I'd prefer a single payer system, but, a reasonably priced public option plan will do.

If only a fraction of the people had that kind of energy/anger and actually did something opposed to just pointing fingers at the "other side", you might actually get some results.

Though the people will have to get their country back first, as it was sold out years ago.

I saw that too. Being from Texas, believe me, we know who Joe Barton is. He is a huge whore for the coal companies poisoning our air.

I agree--too bad they didn't fact check a bit better. Maybe Olbermann will issue a correction tonight.

That is one of the best KO segments I've ever seen. I love it when Keith's all fired up!

http://www.change.org/actions/view/prosecute_...

Please go to the link above and support the Petition/Action I just created urging the Republican Attorney General and Governor-wannabe Bill McCollum, US Dept. of Justice, Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, and Pres. Obama to prosecute Ascension Health/Sacred Heart Hospital/Cardiology Associates for Medicaid Fraud.

Thank you.
