After listening to his colleague Joe Scarborough bemoan the horrible poll numbers for Republicans which came out this week, following their brinksmanship on the government shutdown and the debt ceiling, Dancin' David Gregory had some light at the end of the tunnel to share for those poor old Republicans who might be worried that this should cost them the midterm elections.
Shorter David Gregory: Mid-term elections are still a year away, so we've got plenty of time to polish this turd for the Republicans and pray everyone has really short memories before they go to the polls again. That and grandma had better get used to the idea of her Social Security getting slashed, because those “job creators” need their tax cuts.
GREGORY: I was going to say, to another point that Joe is raising, which is if part of where people have attacked the tactics is getting off the fiscal fight for a fight over Obamacare that wasn't going anywhere. The only thing I'd say about the damage to the Republican brand that we see in the polls right now, is that the end of the story hasn't been written yet.
If we get into a broader discussion and broader debate about the budget, whatever the outcome of that is, perhaps that's what leaves a more lasting impression. Even if Senator Cruz could end up arguing and put watch different spin on how this whole process played out, if it ends up getting to a place that takes a real look at, you know, what the government does, how much to government is spending and dealing with entitlements, etc.
Gregory and his buddy Bob Woodward seem to be living in the same Villager bubble as the lot of them, where they somehow believe that gutting our social safety nets is going to be popular if they just continue to lie to the public that it's the "adult" thing to do.
Good luck with that. If they want to openly tell the truth about the fact that they want to cut Social Security and Medicare in exchange for giving rich people tax breaks, go for it. Let's see those poll numbers go down to the single digits if they're honest with the American people about their goals. In the mean time, the Villagers like Gregory will keep calling their plans "reform."
