Cal Thomas, one of the authors of the National Review's edition entitled 'Against Trump,' sparred with Alan Colmes on this week's Versus segment, where he pits his liberal perspective head to head with a bona fide 'conservative.' However, we are learning that the definition of conservative is rather fluid these days.
Alan asked Cal why he was a contributor to the Against Trump edition of the NR. Thomas explained how it came to pass. The editor called him and asked,
THOMAS: Would you do a 300 word piece on why you oppose Trump? So I said sure, so I did.
Colmes wondered what specifically bothers him about Donald Trump's assertion that he is a conservative. Thomas explained that Evangelicals are blinded by the strong character of Donald Trump.
THOMAS: He's 'a late in life convert,' we used to call that confirmation conversion.
That seems to frustrate most of these conservatives, because it's really shocking that people who believe that the earth is 6,000 years old, who believe in Noah's Ark and are incredibly against proven science, could fall for a carnival barker like Donald Trump. Thomas is just beside himself that Evangelicals are not concerned anymore that,
THOMAS: He's on his third marriage. He's a phony, he doesn't have substantive answers to any of the problems we have.
Obnoxiously, Thomas compares Bernie Sanders to Trump as someone who goes against the purely ideological grain, as if Sanders' policy proposals are as shallow and barren as Donald's idea to make the Mexicans pay for a "Terrific Wall." Nice try, Cal. But we all know that Bernie is head and shoulders above any of the Republican frauds, and trying to compare Donald Trump to Senator Sanders doesn't change the fact that you are seriously up shit's creek with the state of affairs in today's GOP.
Ultimately, we all want to know the answer to Alan's final question:
COLMES: If he's such a terrible representative of conservatism, and you're a true blue conservative, I've known you a long time, why would you vote for him.?
Cal brought up the schism created by a third-party candidate like Ross Perot in 1992 who threw a money wrench into G.H.W. Bush's reelection efforts. He wants to prevent that recipe for disaster at all costs.
Alan reminds Thomas that he once worked for Jerry Falwell and his son recently endorsed Trump. That apparently doesn't sway Thomas on his opinion of Donald Trump. But as he repeated, he'll hold his nose and vote for whomever the GOP puts forth as their candidate. That's because they hate Hillary so very deeply. They treat Bernie Sanders as if he's nuts. Yet those two candidates make every one of their clown car occupants look like the criminally insane misanthropes they truly are.
