A 39-year-old Muslim cab driver who served in the Iraq war says that an executive from an aviation company accused him of being a jihadist and broke his jaw in what activists are calling a hate crime.

Mohamed A. Salim told The Washington Post that Emerald Aviation President Ed Dahlberg attacked him after he picked him up at Country Club of Fairfax in Northern Virginia at around 2 a.m. on Friday. Dahlberg had been drinking and was told that he would have to finish his open beer before getting into the cab.

Salim recorded audio of the encounter on his cell phone.

Dahlberg can be heard asking Salim, who emigrated from Somalia, to define "jihad" and then lumping him in with "radical fucking Muslims blowing people up all over the world."

"Denounce those motherfuckers now!" Dahlberg demands. "If you're a fucking Muslim flying jets into the fucking World Trade Center then fuck you. I will slice your fucking throat right now."

After Salim threatens to call 911, Dahlberg can be seen grabbing for the cell phone.

Salim said that Dahlberg left the cab, but then returned and broke his jaw before running into the woods.

Dahlberg was charged with misdemeanor assault and police are determining if charges should be elevated to a felony hate crime. The Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) on Monday said that medical records and the 11-minute cell phone recording were being used as evidence in the case.

For anyone that didn't catch it, Democracy Now's Amy Goodman was featured on C-SPAN's Book TV series, In Depth, this weekend and spoke to host Peter Slen for three hours about a wide range of topics, including her books Exception to the Rulers, Standing Up to the Madness, and The Silenced Majority.

During the opening of her interview, she discussed how Democracy Now first started broadcasting and their studio's proximity to the World Trade Center during the attacks on 9-11 and the importance of independent media in America where information is not brought to the viewers courtesy of corporate America.

You can watch the entire interview here at C-SPAN's web site. Lots and lots of really interesting and important topics were covered ranging from everything from how close she's come to being killed trying to cover genocide which the American media ignored due to our government's complicity in it being allowed to go on, among a host of other stories which her show has covered that the corporate media here in America ignores.

They discussed what the role of journalism should be in the United States, the Occupy Movement, the Arab Spring, whistle blowers being prosecuted, Gitmo, and many more topics than I've got the time to mention here.

She took questions from viewers, most supportive, a few that sounded a little bit nuts and if you've got three hours to spare and are a fan of Goodman's, I don't think you'll be disappointed about making the time to watch the whole thing.

C-SPAN is generally pretty terrible about the number of right-wing authors who they have on the air as part of their Book TV series. It was nice to see the give this amount of air time to someone from the left for once. It doesn't happen that often on their network.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on Sunday suggested that President Barack Obama was "disengaged" and personally responsible for some of the deaths caused by a terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi on Sept. 11 of last year, but seemingly forgot that President George W. Bush read the book "My Pet Goat" for seven minutes as almost 3,000 people died during the 2001 terrorist attacks.

"Did the president at any time during this eight hour attack pick up the phone and call anybody in Libya to get help for these folks?" Graham opined during an interview on CBS News. "And I do believe if he had picked up the phone, called the Libyan government, these folks could have gotten out of the airport to the annex, and the last two guys may very well be alive... But if he failed to call on behalf of those people under siege then I think that's a massive failure of leadership by our commander in chief."

CBS host Bob Schieffer asked Graham if he had any proof that the president had not made an attempt to contact Libya during the September attacks.

"I don't know what the president did that evening," the South Carolina senator admitted. "I don't know if he ever called anyone, I know that he never talked to the secretary of defense, I know that he never talked to the chairman of the Join Chiefs. They never talked to anybody at the White House."

"This was incredibly mismanaged, and what we know now, it seems to be a very disengaged president," he added. "Again, if he had lent his voice to this cause, I think it would have made a big difference. And I'm not going to stop until we get an accounting."

"We know nothing about what the president did on the night of Sept. 11th during a time of national crisis, and the American people need to know what their commander in chief did, if anything, during the eight hour attack."

As Bush was reading the book "My Pet Goat" with school children on Sept. 11, 2001, Chief of Staff Andrew Card interrupted to let him know a second plane had hit the World Trade Center in New York City.

Parents in El Paso, Texas say they were shocked to find out that a teacher at Hughey Elementary asked their children to depict airplanes flying into buildings, explosions and people jumping to their deaths to remember the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

"We had to draw the boom cloud, the planes hitting, and people jumping out of the windows," the daughter of Ivie Gremillion recalled.

The girl's drawing shows people jumping out of burning buildings and yelling, "Help!" and "I love you!" One student's drawing obtained by KFOX had the writing, "One way ticket to heaven."

In another picture, the terrorist pilots are laughing as they fly planes into the World Trade Center.

"That's something that kids should get in trouble for drawing," Gremillion said. "That's people being murdered, committing suicide."

According to the El Paso mom, the teacher taught students that "the Afghans did this because they hate all of us and want to kill all of us."

A neighbor's son was so distraught after the Monday assignment that he did not want to go to school the next day.

"He was under the impression that this happens every 9/11," Gremillion explained.

To make matter's worse, Gremillion's husband is being deployed to Afghanistan later this year.

"She like, 'My dad's going to die,'" she said her daughter told her. "I would like a counselor to go in there and re-explain all this to that class."

"The way she worded [it] is just teaching racism and hate for an entire nation, and that's not OK," Gremillion insisted.

El Paso Independent School District confirmed to KFOX that students were asked to draw pictures of 9/11 after a class discussion about the tragedy.

"EPISD is very concerned about the images that were drawn in response to a lesson on the events of September 11," district officials said in a statement. "District and campus administrators are investigating the specific assignment and are interviewing the personnel involved."

"We regret the insensitivity that this action may have caused and wish to assure our community that we will act swiftly in this matter and will take any and all appropriate action. We extend our sincere apologies."

After watching the ever widening list of potential 2012 Republican presidential candidates, and hearing that former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani may again consider throwing his hat into that ring, Lawrence O'Donnell on MSNBC's Last Word proceeded to shred Giuliani for his handling of the crisis on 9/11 and went after the BIG LIE on what happened that day.

Counter to our media's general narrative on the topic, Giuliani actually cost the lives of firefighters with his mismanagement of the disaster. O'Donnell noted Wayne Barrett's article on the topic and was pretty well reading from part of it. There's a whole lot more there, so go read the rest, but here's part of the article on BIG LIE number two that O'Donnell discussed during the segment in the video above.

2. 'I don't think there was anyplace in the country, including the federal government, that was as well prepared for that attack as New York City was in 2001.' This assertion flies in the face of all three studies of the city's response—the 9/11 Commission, the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST), and McKinsey & Co., the consulting firm hired by the Bloomberg administration.

Actually, Giuliani didn't create the OEM until three years after the 1993 bombing, 27 months into his term. And he didn't open the OEM's new emergency command center until the end of 1999—nearly six years after he'd taken office. If he "assumed from the moment I came into office that NYC would be the subject of a terrorist attack," as he told Time when it made him "Person of the Year" in 2001, he sure took a long time to erect what he describes as the city's front line of defense.

Keith Olbermann makes all of the media the winner in his "Worst Persons" segment for failing to acknowledge that there was a mosque on the 17th floor of the World Trade Center's second tower as reported in The New York Times over the weekend.

Muslims and Islam Were Part of Twin Towers’ Life:

Sometime in 1999, a construction electrician received a new work assignment from his union. The man, Sinclair Hejazi Abdus-Salaam, was told to report to 2 World Trade Center, the southern of the twin towers.

In the union locker room on the 51st floor, Mr. Abdus-Salaam went through a construction worker’s version of due diligence. In the case of an emergency in the building, he asked his foreman and crew, where was he supposed to reassemble? The answer was the corner of Broadway and Vesey.

Over the next few days, noticing some fellow Muslims on the job, Mr. Abdus-Salaam voiced an equally essential question: “So where do you pray at?” And so he learned about the Muslim prayer room on the 17th floor of the south tower.

He went there regularly in the months to come, first doing the ablution known as wudu in a washroom fitted for cleansing hands, face and feet, and then facing toward Mecca to intone the salat prayer. Read on...

As Karoli and I already posted, Rep. Anthony Weiner ripped into the Republicans for blocking the 9-11 Responders Bill. What neither of us had earlier was Rep. Peter King's hackery on the House floor that set him off. Since Countdown covered it, I thought I'd share it here.

TPM also caught their exchange on Fox News the day after the dust up on the House floor where Anthony Weiner ripped into Pete King again.

Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) went on an apoplectic rant on the House floor last night, and apparently he hasn't cooled off much since then.

Earlier this morning, Weiner and Rep. Peter King (R-NY) shouted and finger-pointed their way through a Fox News interview over a bill that would provide health care to rescue workers effected by the dust from the World Trade Center, which failed in the House last night.

King accused the Democrats of orchestrating a "cruel hoax" with the bill, while Weiner called it "outrageous" that Republicans would vote against it.

Weiner was furious last night that most of the "cowardly" Republicans voted against the bill and then blamed it on "procedure." Exclaimed Weiner: "You vote yes if you believe yes! You vote in favor of something if you believe it's the right thing! If you believe it's the wrong thing, you vote no!"

On America's Newsroom today, King, who is the ranking Republican on the House Committee on Homeland Security, said that "the bottom line is the Democrats control the House, and they pulled a procedural gimmick starting ten days ago, and they lost the nerve to bring it to the floor on a real vote."

He also called the whole situation a "cruel hoax," and accused the Democrats of "moral cowardice."

"They control the House," said King. "They could have passed this."

Weiner shot back: "You know for all the whining about the process, we had an up-or-down vote. Do you know what percentage of Republicans voted for it? Seven percent." Only twelve Republicans voted in favor of the bill.

"Your rant last night about the process and how bad the process was gave cover for your colleagues," said Weiner adding, "Twelve Peter? That's all you could muster?"

Mr. A-Noun-a-Verb-and-9-11 who put the counter terrorism command center in the basement of the World Trade Center, even though he was told that might not be such a good idea, and ran around like a chicken with his head cut off because he had nowhere to work from on 9-11, is Sean Hannity's idea of a great leader. The man has done nothing but profit from his "expertise" since he left office. I guess if not being prepared to respond to a terrorist attack makes you an expert, then Giuliani is highly qualified. We've also got a major case of projection going on during this interview.

HANNITY: All right. All right. You're known for your leadership in 9/11. I mean you walked out there. You were with the people of New York on a daily basis.

How would you rate the president's handling of the gulf crisis?

GIULIANI: It couldn't be worse. This would be an example, if you are taught leadership 101 of exactly what not to do. Minimize it at first. Two days after or three days after it happened, go on vacation. He's been on vacation more often than he has by far been to Louisiana or Mississippi or any of the places affected.

HANNITY: Or playing golf or shooting hoops.

Liz Cheney seems to have forgotten about a presidential daily briefing that said Osama bin Laden was determined to strike within the U.S. The daughter of the former vice president believes that military tribunals for terrorists following the 1993 World Trade Center bombing would have resulted in important intelligence that could have prevented 9/11.

"What you have is a situation, unquestionably we went through a period in the nation's history we dealt with terrorism as law enforcement matter," Cheney explained to Fox News' Chris Wallace Sunday.

"As Attorney General Mukasey pointed out when we prosecuted and convicted people after the '93 World Trade Center bombing and East Africa bombing, what it got us was 9/11 and 3,000 dead Americans."
