TYT: NRA's LaPierre Makes Fox News Look Reasonable

From Cenk's crew over at The Young Turks, it's a pretty sad day when someone manages to make one of the talking heads over at Fox look rational, but that's exactly what we got from wingnut NRA head Wayne LaPierre this weekend on Fox News Sunday. I was listening to Randi Rhodes this Monday and she made some of the same points about the DMV and the "bureaucratic nightmare" that LaPierre was complaining about during his interview with Wallace.

Here's more from TYT's You Tube channel and warning for the clip above, it's not safe for work: NRA's LaPierre Makes Fox News Look Reasonable:

"On Fox News Sunday, following the segment featuring Mark Kelly, Chris Wallace interviewed National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre about various issues surrounding gun control — ranging from background checks to mental health concerns to armed security at schools. Pressing LaPierre on his arguments, Wallace challenged him on some of his opposition to gun control.

Wallace began with background checks, citing the 1.7 million people who've been denied because of the checks — but LaPierre argued that most of those people weren't prosecuted, and we can't say they "were stopped from getting a gun at all."*

National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre was interviewed by Chris Wallace on Fox News. There, he argued that universal checks and registries would only be a "bureaucratic nightmare." No word on if Lapierre has ever been to the DMV or any other government regulating office. Jimmy Dore (The Jimmy Dore Show), Michael Shure (Current TV Political Correspondent), and Brian Unger (How the States Got Their Shapes) discuss.

Karoli reported on this Sunday, but the details are even more disturbing as they come in ...

After Signing Law Disenfranchising ID-less Voters, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker Closes 10 DMV Offices:

Earlier this year, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker became one of the many GOP governors to sign a law disenfranchising voters who do not have a photo ID — a law that disproportionately affects elderly voters, young voters, students, minorities and low-income voters. Having disenfranchised tens of thousands of Wisconsin voters, Walker is now making it harder for many of these voters to obtain the ID they need to regain their right to participate in the next election:

Gov. Scott Walker’s administration is working on finalizing a plan to close as many as 10 offices where people can obtain driver’s licenses in order to expand hours elsewhere and come into compliance with new requirements that voters show photo IDs at the polls.

[...]

Lest there be any doubt, there is absolutely no legitimate purpose behind Walker’s voter ID law. Although Republicans justify these voter disenfranchising laws by claiming that they are necessary to combat voter fraud, a recent study by the Brennan Center for Justice found that only 44 one-millionths of one percent of votes are cast by people who commit voter fraud.

The day I see this guy recalled can't come soon enough. Let's hope they get rid of some of their Senators in the mean time in the upcoming recall elections.

Republican strategist Karen Hanretty does her best at a little fear mongering on health care reform by comparing a government run plan to....gasp...the DMV. Hey Karen, who do you think waits in line longer? Someone sitting in line on a Friday or Saturday night in a metro area emergency room, or someone on the busiest day of the week waiting in line at the Department of Motor Vehicles? My personal experience has been the former.

I've heard this talking point on the DMV before, but apparently Ed hasn't. He almost laughed her off the set.

I included Jeanne Cummings from The Politico talking about their poll on government run health care as the lead up to Hanretty's remarks just as a reminder of why so many Americans have a negative view of it. The fear mongering that followed showing the poll results by the likes of Hanretty and the right wing noise machine is the reason for those numbers.
