Jon Stewart returned from vacation this Tuesday night and responded to the article he read at the Huffington Post where Fox News chief Roger Ailes went after Stewart for admitting he's a "Socialist" and wouldn't do well without Fox. What we got in response was Stewart doing a really good job of explaining why being called a Socialist should not be a pejorative.

As far as not having enough material for his show if Fox did not exist, I'm sure Fox existing makes his job as a comedian easier, but as long as we've got wingnut politicians who are on the air either at the other networks or on C-SPAN spouting nonsense from the House or Senate floor, I don't think Stewart is in danger of running out of new material that's ripe for mockery any time soon.

After having a bit of fun with his "scenario" about what actually happened during that meeting with Ailes, Stewart went on to explain just what he meant by his remarks and what he considers "Socialism" such as protecting things like Social Security and Medicare.

He also took some shots at Republicans for pretending the health care law, or "Obamacare" is that dreaded "s- word", Socialism:

Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) denied Thursday that a bill that would allow hospitals to refuse treatment to pregnant women was misogynist, adding that "nobody has ever fought more for the rights of women than I have."

In a speech on the House floor, Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA) explained why she believed "The Protect Life Act" was a step backward for women's reproductive rights.

"I think this bill goes to the farthest extreme in trying to take women down, not just a peg, but take them in shackles to some cave somewhere," she said. "Twenty-five years ago, this body passed [The Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA)], a bill that basically said that anyone that shows up at an emergency room would access health care, no questions asked. Now, my colleagues on the other side of the aisle want to amend that law and basically say, 'Oh, except for a woman who is in need of an abortion, or except for a woman who is bleeding to death who happens to be pregnant. Or except for a woman who is miscarrying.' Basically, what this bill would do is say that any hospital could decline to provide services to one class of people in this country and that one class of people are pregnant women."

Speier added: "What my colleagues on the other side of the aisle are attempting to do is misogynist. It is absolutely misogynist."

Foxx responded by charging that Democrats were "outside the mainstream" for wanting to use taxpayer funding for abortions.

"For my colleagues across the ailes who say that this is a misogynist bill, nobody has ever fought more for the rights of women than I have," she declared. "Fifty percent of the unborn babies that are being aborted are females. So the misogyny comes from those that promote the killing of unborn babies. That's where the misogyny comes in, Madame Speaker."

In the past six years, Foxx has voted against abortion rights at least nine times. Family planning advocates claim that an amendment introduced by the congresswoman in May was designed to prevent doctors from being properly trained to perform abortions.

"Once again, instead of focusing on improving access to health care, opponents of women’s health are manipulating the legislative process to undermine women’s access to and information about comprehensive reproductive health care services," Planned Parenthood Federation of America's Dawn Laguens said in a media advisory.

Democrats have called House Republicans' latest effort a waste of time because "The Protect Life Act" would never be passed by Democrats in the Senate or signed into law by President Barack Obama.

"Under this bill, when the Republicans vote for this bill today, they will be voting to say that women can die on the floor of health care providers," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) told reporters Thursday. "I can’t even describe to you the logic of what they are doing today."

Rachel Maddow sets the record straight on Arizona gunman Jared Loughner's supposed political affiliations and what conclusions might be drawn in that regard from his purported list of favorite books and wingnut Virginia Foxx's assertion that Loughner is a "communist" and "the liberal of liberals."

GOP Rep: Loughner's Beliefs 'The Liberal Of Liberals':

Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) says political rhetoric doesn't really incite violent behavior at all -- but not before describing Arizona shooting suspect Jared Loughner as a "communist" and "the liberal of liberals."

"This guy appears to be a communist," Foxx told the Winston-Salem Journal. "His beliefs are the liberal of the liberals [sic]. There is no evidence whatsoever that this man was influenced by Sarah Palin or anybody in the Republican Party. This man is not a conservative; he's a fan of communism - that's the opposite of conservatism."

In ascribing affirmative political views to Loughner, Foxx is going farther than her colleagues. Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN), by contrast, only claimed Loughner doesn't appear to be a Tea Party member.

"I don't think members of Congress incite that kind of rhetoric," Foxx added. "I don't think the things we say incite that kind of behavior. And I don't know that the things other people say incite it. I just think we have deranged individuals in this country and occasionally they do bad things."

Pot... meet kettle.

As Rachel noted, Ayn Rand doesn't usually qualify as something being on a liberal's reading list.

And as I've already said, it doesn't even matter what this crazy person's political beliefs are for the rest of us that are tired of the hate speech coming from the right to use this opportunity to ask the hate mongers to knock it off.

Pete Sessions had some help on the House floor today defending those poor downtrodden corporations... wingnut Virginia Foxx. Hey Virginia, can I have my money back that you guys "confiscated" to illegally invade Iraq?

Rep 4 That

A cute take on the iPhone Apps commercial, and a who's-who of Republican douchebaggery.

Countdown's Worst Person segment with winners Bill O'Reilly, Karl Rove and repeat offender Virginia Foxx. Rep. Foxx has now blamed her remarks about Matthew Shepard on ABC News. Keith takes her to task for her extremely lame non-apology.

As noted previously here are the Congresswoman's phone numbers if you'd care to ask her for an actual apology.

Phone: (202) 225-2071

Phone: (336) 778-0211

Phone: (828) 265-0240

Update: I posted this last night at Video Cafe before this latest news came out. Tonight we learn that Rep. Foxx has issued a second non-apology. The Civil Rights Movement has more:

Just minutes ago, local Winston-Salem TV station WXII12 News released an exclusive interview with embattled Rep. Virginia Foxx, whose malicious comments about the circumstances surrounding the murder of Matthew Shepard have caused scorn and anger, and, according to her office, ten death threats.

Foxx’s newest “apology” demonstrates her lack of understanding of the basic issue confronting her: She lied about why Matthew Shepard was killed, and maligned the memory of a 21 year-old college student who, to the world, has become the face of a hate crime victim.

“In the heat of trying to handle the rule on the floor, anybody can use a bad choice of words. Saying that the event was a hoax was a poor choice of words,” Foxx said. “I’ve apologized for that. I never meant in any way to harm the family or offend the family or anybody else for that matter.”

Hardly a change from yesterday’s statement:

“The term ‘hoax’ was a poor choice of words used in the discussion of the hate-crimes bill,” Foxx said in a statement. “Mr. Shepard’s death was nothing less than a tragedy, and those responsible for his death certainly deserved the punishment they received.”

One non-apology is bad, two demonstrates not only a lack of remorse or decency, but a total lack of understanding of the important and sensitive issues that confront out country.

Countdown's Worst Person segment for April 29, 2009 with winners Michelle Bachmann, Rupert Murdoch and Virginia Foxx.

From AmericaBlog on Foxx:

The House Republican chosen to lead the charge against including women, people with disabilities, and gays in America's already-existing hate crimes law - existing law already counts violent crime based on the race, religion or national origin of the victim as a "hate crime" - just referred on the US House floor to Matthew Shepard's murder as "a hoax."

You will recall that Matthew Shepard was the young gay man in Laramie, Wyoming who, a decade ago, was tied to a fence, Jesus-like, pistol whipped in the head some 50 times, then left for dead in the cold fall night, only to be found a day later clinging to life. Shepard died five days later. Even though Shepard's murderers admitted that they killed him because he was gay, the far-right bigots who control the Republican party couldn't resist the opportunity to gay-bash Shepard one last time. Now by referring to his brutal murder as a hoax.
