law enforcement

You've just got to love these Republicans. They attack teachers and their unions and their collective bargaining rights, and then turn around and expect them to do double duty as law enforcement. Here's what's becoming an all too common idea from the wingnuts out there who think more guns is the solution to everything: Oklahoma Republican’s bill would arm teachers and train them like law enforcement:

McCullough plans to introduce legislation that would give school teachers and administrators the right to carry firearms in school. Under current law in Oklahoma, it is a felony to possess a gun on school property.

“I’m going to err on the side of trusting my teachers if it comes down to it,” the lawmaker explained. “I am not going to trust a madman.”

And McCullough explained to KOKH’s Marisa Mendelson that parents shouldn’t worry because teachers would required to get the same type of Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training (CLEET) certification that police officers have.

“These teachers would be trained at the same level as our law enforcement are currently trained,” he said. “They would be trained in target acquisition, in marksmanship. They would be trained in all of the things that our current police officers are trained in.”

Oklahoma parent Tom Jones, however, wasn’t comforted by McCullough’s assurances.

“I don’t believe that’s the answer, I really don’t,” Jones insisted. “I’d have to ask, how are you going to screen the teachers? How do you know you don’t have a mentally ill person?”

Republican state Sen. Ralph Shortey is also on board with McCullough’s plan, but he said that he would allow any teacher with a concealed-carry permit to bring firearms into the school without additional training.

“When citizens have the liberty to protect themselves, they will do so, and they will do so responsibly,” Shortey told The Oklahoman.

These people aren't going to be happy until they take us back to the days of the wild, wild west. Virginia's Governor Ultra-Sound-McDonnell wants to do the same thing in his state as well: Virginia Governor McDonnell Wants More Guns In Schools.

And we heard the same from Texas wingnut Gov. Rick Perry: Rick Perry Tells Tea Party: Allow More Guns in Schools .

The real-world irony is ably captured here by HyperVocal. News clip is from CBS4 in Denver. Sullivan hasn't been convicted of anything yet but the arrest itself is quite surreal.

If you needed any real-world evidence as to why you should never put your name on a building while you’re still alive, former Arapahoe County Sheriff Patrick J. Sullivan Jr. has you covered.

The National Sheriff Association’s 2001 “Sheriff of the Year” was arrested on Tuesday, suspected of trafficking methamphetamine, according to CBS Denver. The 68-year-old Sullivan served as Arapahoe County (Colorado) Sheriff for 19 years before retiring from his elected post in 2002.

The investigation leading up to his arrest, CBS Denver notes, began on Nov. 17th when several police informants connected Sullivan to the use and distribution of meth.

“As part of the investigation authorities say Sullivan agreed to meet a male informant and provide the man drugs in exchange for sex,” according to the report. “That’s when Investigators and members of the South Metro Drug Task Force arrested Sullivan.”

Here’s the kicker: Sullivan, who is being held on $250,000 bond, is sitting in the Arapahoe County Jail. His new home is better known by its updated name: The Patrick J. Sullivan Jr. Detention Facility.

As Rachel pointed out, former Fox News candidate and now Ohio Governor John Kasich may have picked the wrong fight in Ohio. He may not be getting as much attention nationwide for his union busting as Wisconsin's Governor Walker, but he's doing even more damage there and he's going after the police and firefighters as well with his union busting legislation.

Rachel and one of our resident Ohioans on teamcrooks pointed out today that when even the Cincinnati Enquirer is bashing you in op-eds, you've got some real problems.

A shameful performance on Senate Bill 5:

It is shameful that Ohio Republicans pushed the SB5 collective bargaining bill through the Senate on Wednesday using the sort of tactics that congressional Democrats were justly criticized for using during the health-care reform debate.

What's doubly shameful is that this process is tainting an overhaul of public employment practices that is eminently worthwhile and necessary - in fact, long overdue - but should be done in a more reasoned, collaborative manner. The process should produce at least a credible level of buy-in.

We call on Ohio House leaders to step back and see how they can improve the quality of the debate as they take up the measure.

Go read the rest but this is from a paper that heartily endorsed Kasich before the election.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) --Accused man's mom blames Fox News for behavior:

Gregory Giusti's 83-year-old mother had not heard that her son had been arrested, but she told ABC7 he has a history of mental problems. She does not think he would be capable of carrying out the threat; he has never owned a gun, and she blames Fox News for getting her son worked up.

Giusti was arrested Wednesday afternoon for threatening Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi over recent healthcare legislation.

"Greg frequently gets in with a group of people that have really radical ideas and that are not consistent with myself or the rest of the family, which gets him into problems," Eleanor Giusti said. "I say Fox News, or all of those that are really radical, and he, that's where he comes from."

Giusti, 48, has a long history of encounters with law enforcement. Read on...

Who would have guessed it? Think ClusterFox will send Bill-O's stalker producer Griffy out to harass her about why she's being so mean to them? My guess is they'll ignore it just like Tom Coburn defending Pelosi. Haven't seen any push back on that one yet either.

Liz Cheney seems to have forgotten about a presidential daily briefing that said Osama bin Laden was determined to strike within the U.S. The daughter of the former vice president believes that military tribunals for terrorists following the 1993 World Trade Center bombing would have resulted in important intelligence that could have prevented 9/11.

"What you have is a situation, unquestionably we went through a period in the nation's history we dealt with terrorism as law enforcement matter," Cheney explained to Fox News' Chris Wallace Sunday.

"As Attorney General Mukasey pointed out when we prosecuted and convicted people after the '93 World Trade Center bombing and East Africa bombing, what it got us was 9/11 and 3,000 dead Americans."
