Sen. Ted Stevens now begging for his political life
Via Roll Call we hear that disgraced Senator Ted Stevens is pleading with his senate colleagues. As with Larry Craig, the Republicans are turning their backs.
Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) is reportedly calling his Republican colleagues in the hope of shoring up support before an expected vote Tuesday on whether to expel him from the Conference because of his seven felony convictions.
Although it was unclear how many lawmakers Stevens has reached out to, GOP aides said he has been making calls urging his colleagues to withhold judgement until the appeals process is exhausted. Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) has proposed expelling him from the Conference and stripping him of his committee assignments, and a vote on that proposal could occur Tuesday.
Even if Stevens survives through next week, he is widely expected to be eventually expelled from the Senate, with leaders from both parties saying proceedings to remove him would take place at an undetermined time.
Rank-and-file Republicans have also begun to turn their backs on Stevens, the longest-serving member of the GOP. Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.), during an interview on MSNBC Thursday afternoon, echoed a statement he made Wednesday in which he said he would vote for any motion to remove Stevens.
Of course this may all be rendered academic by Tuesday when Mark Begich is declared the winner in Alaska's Senate race. But left with no options, Stevens may decide not to appeal the election results and demand a recount (that the Republican party would most likely have to pay for), turning his focus instead to avoiding jail time. Stevens faces up to 35 years for his recent conviction.

I would be just as happy if Stevens career ends today. For me more because he is a republican, and one less republican any where is good for everyone.
One less insane asshole spouting lies and talking point sound bites to people unable or to lazy to look up the facts and see if they are being lied to or not.
They just chose to believe and nothing else matters.
We need to get the republicans down to something like the independent party, or just get rid of the republican party all together and replace it with maybe two other parties. We need more then the two party opposite side of the same coin we have now.
You know you are in trouble when you need a GOP politician for a character reference!
Hey, it's a nice cushy, all expenses paid retirement for the old goat. Most of his constituents should have such bright prospects as free room and board and medical care.
All those "law and order" conservatives in red state Alaska voting for a convicted felon.
There's some Republican voter "morality" for ya you betcha. Hypocrisy they name is Republican.
I might have voted for him, if I lived in Alaska. It would be a way to get rid of both Ted Stevens AND Sarah Palin (once she appointed herself to replace him).
I hear what you're saying but the best way to get rid of both of them would be to vote for Begich to begin with, which it's looking increasing likely that a slim majority may have in fact done. Praise Jesus for slamming another door in Sarah Palin's face but will she get the message?
I hope not!
the more she trumpets her crap, the more they are going to have to try to suppress her. she's only further s
poiling the republican brand, which is fine with me.________________

I'm with you there. I would at least like to see her make it to the Republican primaries in 2012 just to watch the vicious Romney and 9ui11iani rip her to shreds in front of a nationally televised audience. Pass the popcorn and mooseburgers!
No thanks, I prefer cow patties.

No thanks. I've been forced to eat those for the past 8 years, I've had my fill.

Didn't her god just slam a door in her face? How many is it going to take?
BUT - I do agree that is rather entertaining to have her out there going off - like Old Faithful - over and over again about god opening doors and her plowing right through them. Tons of fun actually. I hope she NEVER shuts up.

She will get the same message she always gets, "Jeepers, God must really want me to be President!"
I think the good citizens of Alaska ought to rename their airport, maybe to something/someone not yet convicted of felonies -- how does Sarah Palin Anchorage International Airport sound?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
notKeith
Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.
I say name it for Todd Palin, Secessionist International Airport!
They could rename the airport after Sarah Palin, Talibunny International has a nice ring to it you betcha!

Sweetheart, It's named after George Sr., not the useless chimp. For some odd reason, they just love George Sr. here. I, myself, still call it Intercontinental Airport, and always will.
Here in Dallas we have the george bush turnpike, named for the father. I wonder how many people realize that?
Or as I prefer to call it, Twat Turnpike.

It was named after George Walker Bush because he was in Dallas on November 22, 1963.

and they have to vote to expel him? It should be an automatic expulsion. Period.

Good point --And all of Congress should be ashamed of itself that this is even a discussion right now. How embarrassing to be such pathetic political animals that this is an issue at all.

Jo:
I dunno. After all, felony disenfranchisement is the modern way of keeping minorities from voting in elections. Moreover, there are many different kinds of felonies, and I'm not sure I would support a rule that said "the people" could never choose to have someone represent them, who, say, was convicted of smoking pot five years ago. Or someone who has served his time, and paid his debt to society.
I tend to like the idea of the Senate having to decide, on a case-by-case basis, whether a duly-elected official should not be allowed to represent his constituency.
Everyone is equally entitled to the pursuit of happiness. Wasn't that once self evident?
Its all over for him. No Republican is going to come out and put his neck on the line for a convicted felon like him. His pleas will end up producing nothing.
Joe O.:
I'm not sure. It's possible they'll all see the writing on the wall, and unanimously vote to expel him. But McConnell has already made noise about how the result of the appeals process should be the determining factor, not the jury convictions. I would just LOVE to see some Republicans support such a heinous threshold.

While I would rather Mayor Begich win this thing outright (which looks increasingly likely), I would almost welcome the opportunity to expel Sen. Stevens.
It takes a two-thirds vote of the Senate to expel a member, and I would just love to see which Republicans go on record for and against expulsion. It would provide and interesting glimpse into the remaining integrity of the party (I know, I know), and possibly indicate whom to lobby when reaching that 60-vote threshold.
Everyone is equally entitled to the pursuit of happiness. Wasn't that once self evident?
Congress is getting back in session and will vote to expel Ted Stevens this week. Also, Begich has won the election, which is another reason the GOP will vote to toss Stevens.
Wire Paladin:
I must be missing something. If Begich wins, Stevens won't be coming back to the Senate in the first place.
So, has the Senate said indicated that it will symbolically vote to expel Stevens prior to the inauguration of incoming Senators? I suppose there's nothing wrong with that, but . . . um . . . why bother? Are they feeling like he'll be a seriously difficult troublemaker in the lame-duck session? Moreso than before?
I'm just wondering, since I hadn't heard anything about such a move.

Stevens faces Republican party ouster, election defeat
But they may not even hold the vote, scheduled for 9:30am, and just wait to get the complete results first.
That's pretty cool, scarce.
We'll see, though. I would indeed expect them all to stall, and wait to hear that Begich has won, and declare that the vote is unnecessary.

You certain you want to refer to a republican and a stall in the same sentence?

If the republican party wasn't in the political crapper Ted Stevens would be given a pass and they would be just fine with having a member of the republican senate who is convicted of 7 felonies.
Criminals and Republicans go together like cereal and milk!
to build their home for free, perhaps Sarah will have second thoughts about aggressively seeking the presidency so early. I doubt if we've heard the end of their legal problems.
Karen,
Yes, it certainly would be interesting to see how Republicans vote on his expulsion, but it may not mean much -- Saxby Chambliss is making righteous noises about voting to oust him, and Chambliss needs to go himself. Any senator who claims he has immunity from testifying under subpoena in a criminal matter for which he may share responsibility is dirt. He claims as a senator, he doesn't have to testify. Let's hope the lot of those lawbreakers is forced out one way or another.
anney:
Heh, Chambliss is facing the threat of election defeat next month. And, while it is possible that the rest of the Republicans will see the writing on the wall, and vote purely out of prudential and selfish considerations, I'd like to see how those who are not up for reelection for 4 or 6 years vote.
Everyone is equally entitled to the pursuit of happiness. Wasn't that once self evident?
..that life is a series of TUBES! In Ted's case his tube is finally going to either the leech field or to the local water treatment facility.
Curiously, both work in this context...

toss him in jail, strip his seat and confiscate his ill gotten home.
Corrupt old bastards deserve to die in jail.
I have nothing good to say about this old c@nt.
Let him beg. It looks good on him. Going out a failure, and convicted felon is its own reward.

Pretty sorry end to a life. I wonder if anyone sees the lesson and learns from it.

So - how many convicted felons do we have serving in the Senate? Would that be just the one right now? Stevens?
Does Senate leadership REALLY want to create the perception of intolerance?

that's what this criminal always says when he disagrees with reason. so here's back at ya, no
Sen. Stevens is certainly aware of the "Monkey-Tribe" mentality of Washington. When you are no longer useful, you are Lion-Lunch. He should have quit while he was ahead.....Years ago. These guys insist on hanging on until something like this becomes inevitable. (Strom Thurmond, Robert Byrd etc.) I mean who works well into their 80's and 90's, and why?
He may not have a choice. The voters may have retired him.
Sorry Ted . . . you are in the same predictament as Senator Joe Lieberman . . . . your past behavior has resulted in your being made to finally pay the consequences. Your Republican Party has fallen apart and everyone is scrambling to rid any and all dead wood in an attempt to rebuild. They don't need you or the bad publicity you have achieved because of your recent indictment.
Lindsey Graham will also bend over backwards to help.
The Roll Call article referred to Republicans like Saxby Chambliss as "Rank-and-file." I believe they meant "Rank-and-vile."
jail time ??
for Stevens ??
can you say... pardon.
He should be so lucky.
But think of the medical costs at the taxpayers' expense.
so why the hell isn't automatic ejection of felons from the government not automatic?
And, since a felon is not allowed to vote (until the right is restored, which Intertubes Stevens' isn't) (if it isn't ejected) it can't vote. Which should include voting on bills, etc.
In AK:
[voting rights are]
Automatically restored upon completion of sentence, probation and/or parole; felon must register to vote.
