Rick Perry's misleading statements about his HPV vaccine support
ABC NEWS has this interesting twist on the convoluted support Rick Perry gave to mandating the vaccine in Texas in 2007. Depending on what you believe, Rick Perry was sincerely motivated in his efforts, or was simply using this unfortunate woman to help out his lobbyist pals at Merck, one of whom named Mike Toomey was Rick Perry's former chief of staff.

Although Rick Perry said at a debate on Thursday that he was “lobbied” by a 31-year-old woman suffering from cervical cancer to require young girls to receive the HPV vaccine, he did not meet the cancer patient until after he had already issued his executive order mandating the vaccine.
It was a rhetorical high point for Perry at the debate in Florida, when he put a personal face on the story and pointed to his friendship with a woman who later died of cervical cancer.
“I got lobbied on this issue. I got lobbied by a 31 year old young lady who had stage 4 cervical cancer,” said Perry. “I spent a lot of time with her. She came by my office She talked to me about this program. I readily admitted we should have had an opt-in but I don’t know what part of opt out most parents don’t get and the fact is I erred on the side of life and I will always err on the side of life as a governor as a president of the United States.”
The woman Rick Perry mentioned in the Republican debate Thursday was Heather Burcham, a thirty one year old woman dying from cervical cancer. But what Perry left out in his answer was that he met her after he issued his executive order.
Somebody sure jumped the gun on this! There should be a whole bag of real, and fake stories like this! Make it so nobody can tell the real ones, and the fake ones! What a Maroon!

Off topic, but can anyone tell me why the media blackout of the occupywallstreet action seems to extend to the liberal blogosphere as well? hardely any mention here, americablog, etc. The blogosphere should really be reporting and encouraging and building support for the protesters in NYC.

I say let the Republicans fight or tear this one apart. In my opinion this is about the only thing perry has almost correct. this vaccine is a good thing. maybe he should have had an opt in instead of opt out but nonetheless vaccinating against cancer is a good thing. let the Republicans ague it is a bad thing.

Reader, suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself.
is the fact that Jerry Brown is about to have a piece of legislation on his desk that will mandate that all little girls aged 12 and up to receive the Gardisil vaccine without parental consent!
And if they get the jabs and have adverse reactions the parents will be on the line to pay for the damages!
It has already been agreed to in our family that my granddaughter will NEVER receive these jabs. As it is she is already required to receive a RIDICULOUS number of vaccinations prior to entering kindergarten.
This Gardisil series of vaccines is intended to prevent a young sexually active girl from getting HPV, the Human Papilloma Virus that causes genital warts. Genital warts is now considered a precursor to acquiring cervical cancer.
Better that we should teach our youth not to have unprotected sex. Better that they should be taught to be highly selective with their sexual partners when they are intellectually and emotionally ready to "have sexual relations". Sticking little girls with needles in order to enrich the bottom line of Merck knowing that there have been serious adverse reactions already to these shots AND knowing that the efficacy of the injections is still experimental. They only think that something like 50-60% of the vaccines will actually work!
My granddaughter will be raised to make intelligent choices. She will know by the time she decides to become sexually active that condoms must always be used along with spermicidal jelly (and not to have sex during certain times of the month as an added precaution against unwanted pregnancy). She will have a full understanding that the use of the condom will prevent her from acquiring HIV, herpes, syphylis, gonorrhea, clamydia etc.
Hopefully she will find someone to really love who can be tested for genital warts. The test is easy and very conclusive.
The bottom line for me is that I have HAD IT with government trying to force me and mine to do a whole host of things that I do not feel comfortable with. From the Patriot Act, spying, airport assaults, forced vaccinations (the ones that should be "elective" like seasonal flu shots) etc.
If Jerry Brown signs legislation forcing 12 year old girls to receive the series of Gardisil vaccinations in California I will be very sadly disappointed in yet another Democratic representative.
Sorry for the rant folks, but shit's getting WAY outta hand with all the "mandates".

While I understand the desire to protect young women from potentially deadly sexually-transmitted diseases, I disagree that it should be required for kids to be enrollable in public schools. Make the vaccine cheap (better-- FREE) and available wherever contraceptives are.
This type of govt intrusion reminds me very much of the oh-so-patronizing cigarette bans in bars.

BTW, both the FDA and the CDC have found Gardasil to be safe and effective.

Rick Perry is a nitwite, but he's right about vaccines. Last year Perry pushed a law that mandated the meningitis vaccine for college students. If you want to understand Perry and vaccines, look at his relationship with a group called Meningitis Angels. The group's founder is from Texas, and they go back farther than the HPV issue.
