Carl Cameron does one of those Now-it-can-be-told stories Fox likes to do. In this episode we learn that:
- Palin did NOT know Africa was a continent.
- She did NOT know who the parties to NAFTA were. [Hint: U.S., Canada, Mexico]
- She threw dramatic temper tantrums over bad press.
- She refused to prepare for the Gibson or Couric interviews.
None of this really came out during the Presidential campaign because of course it was told "off the record". There are a few ways to look at this, the most interesting being is why they felt the need to spill the beans the day after the election. Are the knives really out on Sarah Palin? Sure seems so. Time will tell.
Smith: Now that the election is over, Carl, tell us more about those reports of infighting between Palin and McCain staffers.
Cameron: I wish I could have told you more at the time but all of it was put off the record until after the election. There was great concern in the McCain campaign that Sarah Palin lack the degree of knowledgeability necessary to be a running mate, a vice president, and a heartbeat away from the presidency. We’re told by folks that she didn’t know what countries that were in NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement, that being the Canada, the US, and Mexico. We’re told she didn’t understand that Africa was a continent rather than a country just in itself ... a whole host of questions that caused serious problems about her knowledgeability. She got very angry at staff, thought that she was mishandled.....was particularly angry about the way the Katie Couric interview went. She didn’t accept preparation for that interview when the aides say that that was part of the problem. And that there were times that she was hard to control emotionally there's talk of temper tantrums at bad news clippings......
Notwithstanding that there is to be an avalanche that will continue for many days now we’re told of story upon story of the foibles of Sarah Palin.

I have noticed that all the major news programs this morning have spending too much time discussing Palins stupidity. I beleive that this is just a smokescreen to deflect the real issue at hand...McCain and his handlers. Now those are the people responsible for loosing the election. Palin is a scapegoat manufactured to deflect the real reason McCain lacks sound judgment and intellect!
What you say may be true, but we should welcome the GOP's jettisoning of Palin. David Brooks, in a rare moment of clarity, called her a cancer on the Republican party. She has to be excised before she somehow becomes a cancer on the whole country.

The GOP is going to go into this new government in Jaunuary and play the role of the obstructionist. It is going to blow up in their face. People expect something to be done about healthcare and this whole credit-debt fiasco; they also expect some kind of rebuilding program of our industry. It would be a very bad thing to be on the wrong side of these issues.
There is absolutely NO way she would be a viable Presidential candidate for any party in 2012. This is the nail in her coffin of a national political career.

Sarah Palin is an excellent representative of the part of the Republican base that Brooks likes to call the real America. From time to time those denizens of the American Heartland stand up and speak for themselves, much to Brooks chagrin.
VP Dan Quayle's inability to spell potato did not cause Bush 41's defeat in 1992, nor did Governor Palin's ignorance of geography cause the defeat of Senator McCain in 2008.
Hold on though...you can't compare Quayle's spelling to Palin's "ignorance of geography". This is not like you or I not knowing our basic geography. This woman is seeking to be one of the largest players on the world court.
And as far as her being an excellent representative, I would hope that "real Americans" would strive for more than the lowest common denominator. You're right when you say that they should stand up for themselves but they should demand (and deserve) a representative who is more than just "Folksy".
I doubt anyone would argue that McCain's loss is due only to Palin, but it most certainly showed a surprising lapse of judgement on his part.

I can see why John McCain's speech Tuesday night was so heart felt. He must have been relieved to have lost the election. He almost gave this country a Vice President dumber than Bush and Quayle combined.

Sarah Palin seems pretty cocky about running for president in 2012 on the Republican ticket. Can any individual just announce they're going to "run for President" under the Republican banner? I thought there was a party procedure for sponsoring candidates, that individuals go through some kind of approval process for funding and using the Republican party name, etc.
Or do individuals just throw their hats in the ring based on their own desires and hope they get funding later?

The power struggle we witnessed during the Republican primaries between the party's various factions (most notably the corporate establishment and the evangelicals) is continuing.

He is screaming "Reagan, Reagan, Reagan...conservatism, conservatism, conservatism", without really understanding either.
Reagan was hardly a fiscal conservative and the fact is he was much more progressive on social issues than the right wing will ever admit. He also was a pragmatic, something that extremists don't understand. As far as conservatism...Hannity should take a good look at the policies and the results that the most extreme wing of the GOP, who WAS calling the shots in all those GOP majorities for the last 20 years, has wrought.
Everyone in here is right on when they say that Palin represents the extreme wing of the GOP. Huckabee and Romney, hardly moderates, will have a very difficult time now trying to put the clamp on her and keeping the evangelicals from pulling the GOP over the cliff. It WILL get ugly. This leak of Palin's stupidity is only the first pass. There will be more. On the moderate side, moderates like John McCain (yes, he is a moderate...and that will become clearer now that he is not running for President) will have a much harder time. Most of the GOP retirements this year are folks that were first elected when the GOP looked and behaved much differently than it does now. Moderates in the GOP are a distinct minority, and the GOP has Newt Gingrich to thank for that (gee...where WAS that bloated bastard on election night anyway).

John McCain's words were very astute. As usual, the country was ahead of the politicians. They were ahead of the politicians with regard to the type of politics we want, the way it is conducted, how our representatives should behave, how qualified our representatives are, and most of all...that there may be much less bigotry in the country...certainly on the coasts and in progressive states...than originally believed.
Did anyone see the "good bye" kiss that McCain gave Palin at his concession speech. He treated her like the plague...and he almost forgot to shake the first dud's hand at all. Personally, I think the man looked relieved. He knew what happened, and he knew just what he did to himself by associating with the "low end" of our society.
I do wish him well. The corrupting influence of power seeking was never so evident as in this GOP campaign. Maybe John McCain doesn't need to atone and maybe he does, whether he will find any redemption remains to be seen.

somewhat important because almost half the voters in this country voted for mccain/palin. for some

I worked at a downtown Michigan ave. hotel in Chicago while in grad school. We had "Jerry Springer Show" guests who stayed on our seventh floor. These extremely ignorant people dined at our best restaurant, and would order the most expensive item on the menu, eat a bit and then decided "it was nasty", lol! They regularly had a line of uneaten trays of food outside of their rooms. We had noise complaints(usually domestic fighting, or loud sex) all night. The diverse Nationalities who serviced these people freaked them out. Whenever I see the Palin family, I think about those Springer guests.
And she was almost a heart beat away from the presidency - scary!

Come on everyone we have to keep Palin the Myth alive! Promote her as the best chance the Repubs have-- (she might be).
After all, she has a lot to offer, for comedians. My only suggestion to the Repub Think Tank is: "What this woman needs is more mentality!"

The Repugs knew they were going down in this election, which is why they granted McCain his life-long wish to run for President and prove to his dead Daddy that he was "good enough." And, also why they picked Sarah as his running mate - but, they also thought they could use her as red meat to keep the fundamealist-Christian wing stoked and in the Party.
I wouldn't be surprised if Sarah, arrogant moron that she is, doesn't try to start up her own christian-right party and make herself its candidate in 2012 - that is if she's not serving time in Alaska with her "mentor" Teddy S.
