The Obamas' Thanksgiving
By scarce Thursday Nov 27, 2008 12:00pmFrom CBS2 in Chicago:
CHICAGO (CBS) ― President-elect Barack Obama and the soon-to-be first family handed out food to the needy at a South Side church on the day before Thanksgiving.
Obama, his wife Michelle and their two daughters, Malia and Sasha, shook hands and gave holiday wishes as they handed wrapped chickens to people who had been lined up for hours at the food bank at St. Columbanus Parish, 331 E. 71st St.
...
Afterward, Obama and his family addressed an assembly of children screaming with delight at St. Columbanus Elementary School, asking them what would be eating at Thanksgiving as they applauded and cheered. One held a sign reading, "We love our Prez.""I'm not president yet, I've been elected president," Obama said. "But I'm going to be sworn in as president on January 20th."

Just doesn't seem real -
I am remided of booker T. elementary.
It woulda been funny if Obama had whipped out MY PET GOAT and started reading.
and how about that Secret Service huh? I wonder if there had been a terrorist attack in the middle of Obama's visit w/ the schoolkids...
...would they just let him sit there, like they did w/ Chimpy, when planes piloted by terrorists were rampaging across the east coast?
baby jesus just keeps watching that video over and over
baby jesus just loves this
This video had me blubbering. I can't believe we have such a wonderful, intelligent, thoughtful, compassionate, caring man going to be our president. What a concept!
I trust Obama. He will never be able to make all the people happy all the time but I know he will do his best to actually do what he thinks is best for the greater good rather than focusing on the priviledged and powerful.
I'm so thankful for BARACK OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
we will finally have a President of the people, for the people and by the people. Finally, a President who "gets it". I don't think that there has ever been another PE, or actual President, whom has actually demonstrated such humanity and humility, evenly balanced with compassion and intelligence. I am extremely thankful that we will are fortunate enough to soon have this man as out President.
I totally started bawling at the second video.
think of the influence over those kids' lives. Heck, any kid's life.
I too am a community organizer in Chicago(on the westside). I've seen Barack and Michelle Obama at preliminary Food Pantry drives more than once...in the 90's!
Otherwise, this is just an effective piece of propaganda.
The fact that Senator Obama has been doing this for years before he ran for high office gives his Thanksgiving gesture much more credibility.
I loved seeing Michelle carrying one of the girls on her back. What a fabulous first lady!
I sure hope that Matt in Texas and Samson hear that.
people throwing Big O under the bus already, isn't there?
he still needs all the support we can give him. He faces so many HUGE challenges. Bush and Co. have made such a huge mess. It's going to be uphill all the way.
He cannot do it without help, and for the first time since I don't know when, I want to help the guy who will hold the office be the best Pres we have had. And I'm quite the cynic.
obedience OK?
He may be a nice man, but so far with his cabinet choices the only ones been thrown under the bus are us liberals.
Blind obedience? Total Bullshit! Obama's been saying for years that he didn't recognize a blue or red America. Also if you had been paying attention, you'd know that Obama always stated that he would govern that way by reaching out to ALL sides.
What I don't recall is Obama promising that he would "blindly obey" liberals like Tyler Durden, Samson, and Matt in Texas. Lol.
One might this Obama was doing a photo op but it's clear that's just who he is. You'll never see the Bush Family helping anyone but themselves. It is strange to see a President thinking of people first. What's really sad is how Daddy Bush dropped his wife Barbara at the hospital while she was in pain and let her walking by herself. None of her children or grandchildren went to see her at the hospital, just Laurda called. These are example by actions of both Obama and Bush. Actions always speak louder then words.
... about how members of the Bush Crime Family went golfing or somesuch right after Junior's sister died of cancer.
Maybe I don't have the story exactly right, but it was along those lines. Uncaring, callous, selfish, greedy, unempathetic.
Imagine being raised by a World War II chicken and CIA spook and a pearl-wearing gila monster. No wonder Wanton Boy blew up frogs.
Every day when I shave, what I see in the mirror is a bad motherfucker. (Excuse me. That's what I think about myself.)
In other words, James Bond or Jack Bauer have nothing on me. Then I saw this Obama video...and I can't stop crying
like a baby. The last eight fucking years were simple horrible. I lost three commanders and twelve friend. Lots of
people I know, maimed, mangled, you name it. To wake up every day and to think that in two months
we'll never have to see that son of a bitch again, and that he will be gone forever, gets me elated. And the only thing
I can say is: Thanks oh Lord!
"I'm not president yet, I've been elected president," Obama said.
In MY opinion he IS MY PRESIDENT.
Not that other loser "w".
I don't know how well off you and your families are. Many have no idea of the humiliation ordinary citizens feel by asking for help, whether it's free food or other wise. Obama spoke of the lack of dignity one feels at such times.
So why is 100% of the focus on the con artists of Wall Street? Right before the holidays too. The focus on 'shopping' always speaks to the bottom lines of businesses. Men and women who'll rip the shirt off your back just to polish their shoes.
Health issues have destroyed me, and the rest of my family has it's own share of problems not of their own making.
Knowing how quickly and amply our 'officials' have come running to bail out Wall Street and the banks, and knowing we're on our own until...?? well, most of those I know can't wait for more of this same old trickle down shit.
Did Chase, and B of A and Citi, Capital and Am Express - did they really get the message?? Do they know the government assistance Obama and the Treasury hands them wasn't just for themselves - for their Christmas - but for everyone's??
That we the people wanted some help too, and some new options, for a change??
Well I and my entire hurtin' family decided to find out. Between the lot of us , we had credit cards from every company listed above. So we set out and began calling our now loaded with $$ credit card companies, who've not only got billions of free government dollars, they've earned billions more by doubling their interest rates and not lending money unless your starving enough to pay it. We all are that hard up -we pay.
I haven't heard back from them yet on they're luck.
But I just got a nice Fuck You after my long time never late account with Bank of America.
Just try it yourselves, try asking if they ready to help -in any way. See how quick they want to spend any of those billions on YOU.
I simply asked if they could help get me through the next few months, so I'd have a few extra $$ to have a decent Christmas, this time.
I didn't ask for more credit. I simply asked for any assistance- possibly making reduced payments for a few months.
They reminded me of my 'duty', and hung up.
i have never seen a president elect or president helping out in a food kitchen or a food giveaway....ever
unlike clinton and his "i feel your pain" bs....obama does truly care
i dont know if he and his team can repair the numerous problems that the usa faces....but he is already going a long way to change attitudes
i mean, even carter waited until he was a former president to get out there and help out the regular folks...this is beautiful
he's been working on it for several years now. This isn't his first time, or first Thanksgiving, doing this. No, this man truly is practicing what he preaches.
...by the screaming. What other politician could elicit that kind of a response?
I'm not a small child & am not that easily impressed, but you have to think that this ends the decade of apathy & shell shock people have been in.
Good. Maybe we can tear down the record labels & start making real music again.
have i seen crowds of any age react to a politician like this
we are about to hit really hard times....at least we can start off with at least a partial era of good feelings
a change has come.
Why would a godless liberal like Obama take his family to participate is socialist activitiest, like offering free food to the poor.
Everyone know that freedom is not free, that is why Joe the Plumber call Obama a socailist because he gives away free food.
Beside, the godly and christian george bush certainly had would never engage in a socialist activitist like going to a soup kitchen or look for a church during his 8 years in DC?
My gosh, what had the world come to? Why would a godless liberal promote socialist activity like offering free food to poor people while the true believer, Bush never put himself in such situation in the last 8 years.
I am sooo glad mcgramps and thumper were thumped.
But the Obama's adopt a three legged, dog, hand out food at the salvation army and visit school kids, his kids are going to do chores around the Whitehouse--at least making their own beds...
Have we elected a National Nag?
Perhaps that is what this country needs. Many of us are quite incredibly spoiled. My family is struggling but I have friends who sure are not and I truly am thankful for their support.
We're all going to need to suck it up and do our part.
first off, obama did not adopt a 3 legged dog...that was an ad by the humane society
we elected a real human being
a politician he may be...but for the first time in the history of this country, we have elected someone not a part of the ruling class
we thought we were getting that in bill clinton....but now we know better
obama is the real deal
I started blubbering when the man cried in the first vid after being asked how he felt about the President-elect came down to give out food. We are fortunate to witness such a thing as a US President do this.
This is a time for tears of joy as well as of pain. I felt both in that man's tears.
Hope is not a small thing.
... When George W. Bush went to a grade school at the start of his first term, he spent the time reading about pet goats.
.
The estatic cheers bursting out of those kids had me laughing out loud with sheer joy.
What a difference between THIS man and the one who sat stonily silent and reading 'My Pet Goat' for several impotent minutes.
Damn, what a GREAT Thanksgiving this is!
My husband and I are going through something similar....I don't want to get into details because there is not enough bandwith..but in a nutshell, my husband a children were in a car accident where they were (mercifully) not harmed in any serious way, about a year and a half ago. My son, however, had a concussion (moderate). he was 7 at the time, and this is his second. The first was from being hit by a car in front of our house when he was 3. (not serious, but he had a slight skull fracture with that one.
Long story short, We had a doctor, whom we had had for over 10 years, who would not accept second party insurance to do the follow up on my son, and had to go through a lot.
In this time period, I made a credit card payment on line, that was taken out of the account 5 days early. It was not my fault, and the bank admitted it. It was someone reading an 8 as a 3(remeber all done online) I had 10 checks bounce because of this, all low dollar amounts, and racked up $350.00 in fees. As you can imagine, this it took a while to get it sorted out, but I was also late paying my Bank of America Charge.
My husband and I had never been late on anything. We had a great credit rating (over 800). But this was on two of MY personal accounts, that I did not have my husband on as a co-signatory.
Cutting to the chase, we have had to negotiate with three different creditors to keep from having to file bankrupcty because of this. Medical bills, bank fees, interest rates being hiked from below 10% rates to 29%, overbalance fees, all because of having a family emergency that is still not resolved.
Oh...and the insurance company for the man who rearended them (at 40 miles an hour, while they were at a stoplight...no skidmarks.) didn't even offer us enough money initially to pay off all of the DOCTOR BILLS, let alone the other inconvenient problems that have resulted from this.
We figured up how much we have paided to the three creditors and the bank in the last 18 months just in fees, not interest or regular payments...and the number was staggering. We've paid Bank of America over $4ooo.oo in fees, American Express almost $1,800.00 and Barclays almost $800.00.
In short..the amount of the credit owed to Barclays and Bank of America when this all started (and I have not used either card since the first mess up) was a little over $7,000.00. The American Express is higher because we used it to have a shed built on our property, including concrete pad to sit on, to store some of our older son's things, (he's in Iraq for the second time).
What is that about DUTY, again. I believe that most of us are trying to do our DUTY to the companies. The Bail Out is also coming from us.
Frankly, I would not ever ditch on a debt if I had a choice, but I have to tell you, recently I have felt like telling them to F themselves.
By the way...didn't this kind of thing used to be called Usary?
Also...I know that WE don't have it as bad as a LOT of people. We have a home and jobs, and are making ends meet..if a little shakier than we would like.
a non profit organisation. They will run the gauntlet for you, arrange payments on your behalf and will negotiate lower interest rates. Your credit report will read as R8 to creditors, which is better than R9 (write off to a collection agency), or even R3 (90 days PD), judgements following lawsuits, or a bnky.
Don't go to a for profit or new credit counseling group; they're springing up all over the place and they are ripoff artists.
Start here Consumer Credit Counseling Services. This is the best of the lot. When I worked in credit, they had cred with us when they were helping one of our customers pay their bills.
It's a 501c3 nonprofit that can help you:
* Set up a realistic household budget.
* Create a financial action plan.
* Learn to take control of and reduce debt.
* Find ways to save money every day.
* Alleviate stress associated with overwhelming debt.
They'll help you do a budget, work out how much you can pay, and their fees come from user donations, and credit companies donate too. Ironic. They can help take the weight off, and like I said, companies are willing to work with them, because they KNOW those guys are telling the truth about your financial situation. And you'll have someone to talk to that isn't a friend or family.
And going this route can clean up your credit much faster than you can do on your own
I wish you the best of luck with this, however you handle it.
i did the same...it still fucked up my credit
the internet is a wonderful place
do a search for debt validation and negotiating with your creditors
trust me...they dont want you to declare bankruptcy...and will work out a better plan so that you can pay off your debt
i know how it feels...ive been struggling over the past year running my own biz, and a new client decided to bounce a sizeable check...which he wouldnt cover
i started bouncing checks, and the bank fees have killed me...and this after clearing up a debt prob about 2 years ago
the economy has got me in a tizzy...im sure that my biz is going down the poop chute, and declaring bankruptcy wont really help
my only positive is that i dont have a family...so the only one that is getting hurt is me
Sounds like it's fucked up already. and I suggested she look into it. It's an option. As a bankrupt myself, over medical bills, and ten years in the industry, I know pretty much of what it is I speak. I'd take R8s over a bnky or one R9 on my credit report. R2 and higher stay on your credit report 7 years; bnky is there ten years.
Any decision taken by this poster of course needs to be researched and this is one way. Nothing wrong with researching options.
Thanks for the advice. We actually looked into a couple of credit counselors, and found that that best one was a guy who is a vet, like my husband, who worked for the bank.
We have been trying to work out payments with the creditors, but it is frustrating that most of them were not willing to work anything out until we were in trouble. We still have a few issues to iron out with American Express..because they are Arseholes.
The Banker we talked to gave us one of the most valuable pieces of advice the we got...which was to drop the B word in the conversation, as in "Gee, we really are trying to pay off these bills, but the interest and fees are killing us. If we can't do something to lessen some of the fees, we won't be able to afford this and may have to file bankruptcy"
For your entertainment, I'd like to post these comments on this story from our friends the freepers in an article entitled, "[President-elect]Obama and family hand out food at a Chicago church" (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2138...):
"Yes, but did he turn water into wine or feed thousands with a few barley loaves and a handful of fish? Were those the chickens that came home to roost?"
"Patronage system at work. Every homeless person he feeds is him thanking 1,240 different votes, courtesy of Acorn."
"Hey Barack, the election is over. You can stop campaigning now. Your people already got all the dead people to the polls to vote for you."
"Of course, just a few short years ago, before he ran for the U.S. Senate, Obama gave almost nothing of his own to charity. Then again, he didn’t have the cameras on him then."
"Pure photo-op"
"You notice the article doesn’t say he paid for the food? You and I know he was just there for the photo opp., and had NOTHING to do with the charity at all."
"Appropriate for BHO - teaching his kids to give away things that aren't theirs."
"The people were probably forced to wait in the line until he and the First President Eject Lady got there with their cute little kids."
[A picture of Obama at the food bank (http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics/bl...)]
"Look at this! Some person is bowing down to Obamalama. How disgusting. The comments on the article at the ChiTrib say things like.."Bush never handed out food, he came from wealth and privilege..." I want to vomit, look at those folks all yukking it up as the ONE ACCEPTS the adulation... I puke on Obama."
"Did he lament the cost of arugula?"
so I don't have to.
I also hope they have 8 years and then some of this smashed in their faces. Schadenfreude strikes again!
My giddiness at seeing these vids is slightly tempered by seeing these dumb a s s freerepublic comments deriding the Obamas. I mean, come on !! How petty, rude, selfish, and thoughtless are these people ?! Are there really doofuses who feel this way ? Their ignorant and mean-spirited comments reflect badly on them--just goes to show how selfish and it's-all-about-me these right-wingers are.
*sniff*
Just laugh at them, which is all they deserve.
Laugh with me, Jocko! Laugh with me!
Be proud, America. At last the pendulum has swung back towards the light. We in the UK could not be happier that you have elected such an exceptional leader. Cometh the hour, cometh the man.
And many miles to go. This President has legs.
So sorry for this bit of cynicism...Do you suppose the school will now be in trouble with the Pope and the bishops for obviously being supporters of Obama?
grabbed me in the gut and brought tears to my eyes. When is the last time, if ever, we've seen a President (to be) and his family helping to feed the poor and needy? And, they've been doing this for years. The man at the end of the first video brought tears to my eyes and then, watching the joy and enthusiasm of the young students in the second video really did me in. That was a day these children will remember the rest of their lives.
The whole thing brought tears of joy and hope to this old hippie/flowerchild/soldier with the thought that perhaps there is a future for humanity besides one of killing, hatred, and violence.
